Exxon: 25 Years of Tears in Alaska

(0) Comments | Posted March 24, 2014 | 6:23 PM

Time has a strange affect on events in our lives. I feel I'm looking through a glass of water when I look back 25 years to this day, March 24, 1989.

I'd left Seattle University and the Ballard Lochs on the M/V Westward heading north through the Inside Passage of...

Free EPT Tests in Alaskan Bars... Because Birth Control Is Irresponsible

I had a plan to write a column that was going to make the Anchorage municipal elections coming up be the sexiest, most riveting thing you've ever read. Then someone did something stupid in Juneau, so you'll have to wait a week while I sort this doofus out.

First, the...

Pope Francis: The War on Poverty vs. the War on Christmas

(68) Comments | Posted December 2, 2013 | 7:22 AM

Though not Catholic, I went to a Jesuit University and had one of the most spiritual experiences of my life in Rome. I watched the smoke from the Sistine Chapel signal the selection of a new pope.

I like the new guy, Pope Francis. He's not perfect, and neither is...

It is hard to imagine being abducted, away from your family for eleven years, chained, beaten, with no hope for freedom even when your captors know you did nothing to be there ... that is the case for eighty six men held at Guantanamo Bay prison facility.

Neighbors turned in...

Congressman Don Young's '50-60 Wetbacks'

(14) Comments | Posted March 28, 2013 | 10:22 PM

In an interview with Ketchikan's KRBD, Alaska's one and only Congressman, Republican Don Young, was able to include a racial slur in comments regarding the economy and employment. Congressman Young said, "My father had a ranch; we used to have 50-60 wetbacks to pick tomatoes," he said. "It takes two people to pick the same tomatoes now. It's all done by machine."

Congressman Young is again under investigation by the House Ethics Committee. The fresh charges are that he failed to report gifts, misused campaign contributions and lied to investigators.

The National Republican Party has recently acknowledged their lack of outreach to the Hispanic population, and have vowed to repair and reach out. Something tells me this wasn't part of their new program.

In 1994, the colorful Congressman waved an Oosik (Penis bone of a walrus) around at a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hearing. When speaking to students in Fairbanks, Young was answering questions about cutting federal funding for the arts that he said had underwritten, "photographs of people doing offensive things," and "things that are absolutely ridiculous." Asked for specifics, Young answered, "Buttf**king."

Congressman Young has represented Alaska since...

VAWA Not a Victory for Alaskan Native Women

(16) Comments | Posted March 12, 2013 | 8:26 AM

President Obama signed the Violence Against Women Act last week. Finally, something bipartisan passed!

American women are better protected from coast to coast -- but all the way up north? Left out in the cold.

First, you should know a few facts. Native American and Alaska Native women...

Shell-Shocked Alaska

(7) Comments | Posted January 7, 2013 | 7:27 AM

Royal Dutch Shell's Alaska operations could have used a dose of "local knowledge" to prevent their latest debacle: the grounding of the oil rig Kulluk. That phrase, "local knowledge," should ring a bell for Shell. The company was the one of the largest contributors to a group opposing the restoration...

My Guns Are Less Regulated Than My Uterus

I'm old enough to remember when the NRA was invited into our schools to educate students on gun safety. Yes, I'm old, and I grew up in rural Alaska, but the NRA as an institution has changed as much as everything else has since then. It now operates as a...

Dear Mr. President,

As a woman who worked very hard to make sure your last opponents were not elected -- walking door to door in the snow on your behalf, registering more than a thousand Alaskans to vote, exposing Palin in the national...

What's the Matter With Alaska?

(103) Comments | Posted November 17, 2010 | 4:35 AM

Something  in Alaska stinks. Again. Not just an ordinary low tide smell. Not like something you'd blame on the dog. It smells like an infection. For me to plug my nose, I'd have to overlook some curious facts.

I've written another piece like this. It was after the last election....

Joe Miller's Alaskan Militia

Joe Miller is fond of private security.

In the Spring of 2008, Joe Miller showed up wearing Eric Estrada circa 1984 mirrored sunglasses, with security guards in a staged coup d'état of the leadership of the Alaska Republican Party. He lost. Randy Ruedrich still stands supreme as the party Chair,...
