Palin Pallin' with Preacher

The righteous is concerned for the rights of the poor; the wicked does not understand such concern.

--Proverbs 29:7

Hungry and cold has become the narrative of many in Western Alaska. Outrageous fuel prices, inflated food costs, low subsistence harvests and low or no incomes aligned to create the perfect storm of a devastating reality.

Dennis Zaki, an Alaskan journalist, raised money for food and traveled to several western Alaskan towns several weeks ago and documented their dire straits. CNN picked it up and Sarah Palin had some 'splaining to do. With her cabinet, Sarah's press conference last week was like watching a brainstorming session -- not exactly gale force winds. When asked what she personally had done for her citizens in need, she stumbled and had no answer.

Reverend Franklin Graham is in Alaska with Samaritan's Purse, his not-for-profit charity. Governor Light Sean Parnell and Governor Sarah Palin are escorting him to the villages of Russian Mission and Marshall. Mr. Graham, son of the legendary evangelist Billy Graham, has done some fantastic missions. Wow, actually doing God's work. What a concept. Working to treat AIDS, but not providing condoms because it condones "sin" is one of the controversies surrounding his work. The Samaritan's Purse, unlike the parable of the Good Samaritan has some pretty mighty strings.

So was Reverend Graham watching the CNN coverage of Emonnak and inspired to help? Well, that's unclear...but what is clear is his connection to Greta Van Susteren of Faux News.

Greta's "You gotta see the baby" interview with Bristol Palin was filmed at our local Anchorage library last weekend. The BFF relationship between Van Susteren and Palin is like none other in media. Greta doesn't ask "gotcha questions." Snowmachine rides with Todd, dinners at the Wasilla home, trick-or-treating with Piper on the "Straight Talk Express" are just few of their play dates. Greta has several BFFs other than Sister Sarah including Franklin Graham. Her coverage of Billy Graham's 90th birthday pales in comparison to her trip to North Korea with the Samaritan's Purse Tour. Susteren is featured on Graham's website. Did she pick up her Crackberry and send Franklin an S.O.S. on Palin's behalf?

I shouldn't be so picky about where the food to help the hungry comes from. In truth, I don't care if Osama Bin Laden pulls it out of his pantry. The people of Western Alaska need help. The last church that tried to "help" the First People of Alaska is now bankrupt after paying restitutions to the victims of their sexual predators.

God doesn't need the P.R., but the church does...and so does Sarah Palin.

So why does this matter?

It's the photo op, stupid.

emmonakzaki

Senator Mark Begich is assessing the situation in Bethel on Friday. His attention to the region has been sincere and unwavering. Begich doesn't come holding a cross or with a self-indulgent film crew documenting how much he loves Jesus. The separation of church and state requires no explanation. People shouldn't have to check a box defining what, if any, god they worship to get food or energy assistance.

With Senator Begich and Governor Palin scheduled to be in western Alaska the same week, Sarah has pulled the political trump card with the celebrity preacher...a postcard to her national base. Unfortunately, Alaskans are paying the postage.

As usual, another brilliant post from Shannyn. And ever so troubling. Ever. And when I want to know what's going on in Alaska, I don't read the Governor's press releases, I check in with the Girl from Homer. How the Governor can turn her back on the poor and elderly who were hungry and freezing and still call herself a Christian is totally beyond me. WAS totally beyond me, I should say, because nothing, and I mean nothing, coming out of the Governor's offices these days surprises me anymore. Nothing.

Everyone of these villages have stores in them. Whats wrong with food stamps? not a thing.
Except giving the people in the villages more food stamps would not have resulted in a big photo op,
and worse it would have fixed the problem.

Obviously the person who wrote this has no idea how Sarah has been working to help all of those in need in Alaska long before John McCain noticed her. See, she has been working quietly on behalf of fellow Alaskans for a very long time and she was never looking for any meida attention BIASED or otherwise.

Governor Palin Outlines Continued Support for Alaska Seniors

February 21, 2007, Juneau, Alaska — Governor Sarah Palin introduced legislation today to continue support for low-income older Alaskans by extending the Alaska SeniorCare Program. Without passage of this legislation, the program will end June 30, 2007.

“We must support our seniors,” Governor Palin said. “I’m pleased to present a plan that continues this important assistance to Alaska seniors, and helps keep pace with cost-of-living changes.”

The SeniorCare program was created in 2003 to help low-income Alaska seniors with monthly cash payments of $120. The program was expanded in 2005 to help cover prescription drug costs. Currently, nearly 7,000 Alaskans are enrolled in the SeniorCare cash assistance program and about 140 receive prescription support.

Governor Palin’s legislation will continue the $120 SeniorCare monthly cash payment to low-income seniors for five years and will tie eligibility to the annual federal poverty income guidelines for Alaska. Currently, the program’s eligibility is frozen at 135 percent of the 2005 federal poverty level.

Redboots2012: Obviously, YOU have no idea about what the SeniorCare program is or how it came into existence. Sarah Palin did not start it. Frank Murkowski did. Palin did not take office until December 2006, so -- obviously -- she was not in on the creation of SeniorCare. Duh! It was a replacement for the Longevity Bonus program. Palin, and others, opposed Murkowski's elimination of the Longevity Bonus and his plan for it to be replaced by SeniorCare, and promised to resurrect the Longevity Bonus. She never did, and neither did the legislature. So, for better or for worse, the state was left with SeniorCare instead of the more expensive and now-dead Longevity Bonus program.
I can't believe people like you have the gall to to give Palin credit for Murkowski's SeniorCare program (now called Senior Benefits), but there you go again. . .
P.S. - Redboots, dollars to donuts, you are not an Alaskan. Shannyn Moore is. Big time. I think she knows more about what's going on in Alaska than you do.

And one more response, this one to the notion that Palin "has been working to help all of those in need in Alaska long before John McCain noticed her" and "working quietly on behalf of fellow Alaskans for a very long time and she was never looking for any meida (sic) attention BIASED or otherwise"
BS! BS! BS!
The Longevity Bonus/SeniorCare issue was very much covered in the Alaska press, exhaustively covered. It was much discussed, debated and covered during the 2006 gubernorial primary. It was brought up at many, if not all, of the debates.
Palin grabbed many headlines with her abundant Longevity Bonus/ SeniorCare pronoucements. Funny, though, I never recall her giving any credit to the Murkowski administration, grudging or otherwise, for creating SeniorCare.

Governor Palin should be impeached for allowing her own people to starve and freeze for FIVE WEEKS before she did anything to responded.

Even if her hands were tied in relation to the use of state resources, she could have made use of her celebrity and national profile to raise awareness of the plight of her people, she could have made an announcement at the start of the Iron Dog race for donations and food drives, she herself could have donated food, money, clothing and she also could have used her influence with Greta Van Susteren to bring help to her people. She did NOTHING. Not one thing for 5 weeks since this matter was brought to light. Nothing. Until the media started to ask some long overdue questions.

I invite you all to visit The Mudflats blog - great posts daily on the great state of Alaska.

Palin is one cold heartless piece of work.

I know how cold and miserable it is to live without heat, based on a late autumn stint at a heatless high mtn. hut in NH and the frequency of our house's power loss, here in ME. But those cold days were only temporary, and we never went hungry. My heart goes out to the people of western AK, and to anyone living in the cold and/or without enough food. I will surf the net to see if there are any reputable organizations to donate to in order to help these communities. Except for Graham's programs. I'd rather just mail a personal check to a family rather than send money with religious strings attached. Anybody know of any alternatives?

If you go on the Mudflats blog and search for "Emmonauk" - you should come across the original posts about the food/heat crisis and donate that way. There should be an address on where to send checks.

If you are unsure - you can also try to contact the blogger who will be more than willing to pass on info.

We have programs at grocery stores here in Maine as well. And many churches have food and clothing drives. We also have thrift stores that raise money for causes. One of the reasons the Alaskan communities are having a hard time getting help is of course the distance; AK is huge, and these people live many many miles away, only accessable in most places by plane and snowmobile. In a way, they are out of sight, out of mind. It's true, there are many people in the lower 48 suffering as well, but I can't think of another place that has inflation like they do. And unfortunately, they have a governor trying to build her "fiscal responsibility" cred while people wait in the cold. We are watching, Sarah! Hop to it!

This segment of the Alaskan population is not alone in their suffering. There are thousands of others in communities across our nation who are in the same situation. Foodbanks everywhere are seeing an increase in the number of people coming for help and at the same time they are experiencing a decrease in the contributions. What is Rev Graham doing to help those in other communities?

I know at my local supermarket every checkout stand has a collection box for monetary donations to the local foodbank. I usually drop the loose change that I get into the box, or sometime I'll drop an extra bill or two. It's something that all chain food stores should be doing.

The local supermarkets around here have gift bags of groceries. You can scan the barcode to have one added to your bill.

What is Sarah doing? Is she going there to see how much weight everyone lost while starving to death as she was playing politics with the plane to deliver the food? Kind of a weird evil weight watchers program?

Franklin Graham is a good man but he will never have the world wide respect his father had because he unlike his father has chosen to be politically active. I understand that christians have every right to their political views. Where the problem comes in is letting their religious views and their political views collide. Church and State must be kept seperate if we are to remain a truly free nation. Those who are mixing the two are eventually going to find out that this country is not going to let them get away with it. Do your good deeds Mr. Graham but stop with the political crusade.

I guess Sarah Palin just heard about this crisis yesterday and responded quickly --NOT!

Here's a time line for people in the lower 48.

She saves up positive photo ops to use when she needs to get the attention away from bad press in the main stream media. She's been saving this one for a long time!

Perhaps if Sarah Palin didn't charge the people of Alaska for everything, there would be enough money to help these people.

Shannyn - keep up the good work. Here in the lower 48 spring is starting to creep in, we're having brighter and longer days, and it seems that winter will be heading out soon. It makes it a little harder to really understand just how cold and miserable it must be in Alaska right now, and how much these people must be suffering. Wait a little longer, til spring is really here, and it will be even harder still for most of the country to understand the depth of the problem.

When Franklin Graham was interviewed on national news shortly after the 9/11 attack on the twin towers, he stated that the victims who had not been saved were burning in Hell at that very moment. While this sentiment is common among evangelical Christians, his lack of sensitivity was appalling. George Bush's and Sarah Palin's association with this guy speaks volumes about their beliefs.

Wow. I'm stuck on that bible quote at the top of the blog. I don't read the Bible, go to church or believe in God but ironically, I find bible quotes to be the most accurate interpretation of the hypocrisy of the "religious" right.

Come on Syrin, if you are going to talk about a scandal factory then be fair. The one that is going on in the nations capitol is far more important than what is going on in Alaska. Besides why is anyone still Palin bashing, do you think she might be back nationally, and why does that scare anyone??
Mommadona, please read the Quoran, and then realize that it is the extremist that are trying to get the 12,000,000,000 Muslims to goose-step to the finatical side of the religion. Ignoring this fact will lead to a place that you or I, or anyone else in America wants to be!

Maybe you should tune into FAUXNEWS sometime. They have been talking about GOP leadership and Palin is mentioned over and over again. There was a segment yesterday on FAUX and they put up pictures of 6 potential leaders of the Republican party...the last picture up???

Sarah Palin...do not underestimate this chronic pathological narcissist. That would be a mistake.
06:51 AM on 02/20/2009
The fact that's she's being considered as a potential leader of the GOP is frightening. But even if she doesn't make it, the poor Alaskans still have to put up with her for at least another 2 years...
