Why I Love Girls -- At 51

Posted: 02/12/2013 8:13 pm

There's a lot about Lena Dunham's award-winning show Girls that can make your skin crawl, if you are uncomfortable with:

  1. Nudity

  2. Obscenity

  3. Sex

  4. Honesty

As an actress, Dunham is unabashedly free with herself -- and as a writer and director, she's the same with the show's other characters. Watching her play ping pong, topless, in the Feb. 10 episode One Man's Trash was more heartbreakingly honest and real than any television I've seen in a long time. Girls works because of Dunham's raw and in-your-face depiction of her interpretation of being 24, single, broke and optimistic -- and even though, at 51 I'm far from the audience I imagine she's trying to reach, she reaches me nonetheless.

I remember how it felt to be like those girls. I remember the pull between the desire to be footloose and the deep, primal need for human connection. I remember the lonely weekends when I was waiting... for something. I remember the moments of pure joy with my girlfriends, when we all knew that we were gorgeous and hot and could rule the world. The heartbreaks, the humiliations, the perfect evenings, the first kisses -- who can forget that?

When I watch Girls I don't see my own daughter -- who at 23 is right in the thick of her own version of the show, though I try not to think too much about her life in that context. No, what I see when I watch Lena and the fabulous cast -- Allison Williams, Zosia Mamet, Jemma Kirke and the rest -- is myself, my youth, my moments. Lena Dunham may be writing about 20-somethings now, but she's reminding me of so much of my life and my experiences at that age -- not exactly the same, of course (what I would have given for a cell phone), but the essence of being at that time in life when anything, anything at all, was possible.

There are a lot of complaints about the show being self-indulgent, narrow in scope, and elitist -- only rich kids can live like that -- but that doesn't matter to me and I don't think it's true. What matters is Dunham's ability to get to the essence, in every episode, of some basic experience that I -- and I'm sure many others -- experienced during our 20's in the days of Duran Duran, shoulder pads and parachute pants. As she said in the Feb. 10 episode to the older, rich doctor she had a two-night stand with, during an emotional outburst that (of course) pushed him away: "I want what everyone wants, I want what they all want, I just want to be happy... I just want to feel it all."

I like revisiting my 20's with the girls on Girls. I don't care if I'm decades away from the audience the show is trying to reach -- it's reached me anyway. I have high hopes for Hannah and her friends -- that after they feel it all, they'll be happy.

My husband and I love this show, too. He is 51 and I am 49. Lena Dunham is hilarious!

Big huge ditto! From a 42-yr-old.

I find it interesting that men 50 and older are the largest demographic watching the show.

I love Girls! They are so real and funny! I don't see my self in any character but I bet lots of girls do, I love it!

Sharon, we're the same age, and you put it into words perfectly for me, thank you!

I also don't see my young daughter in the characters, her life is drastically different here on the west coast, but at heart, I do see my 20s, working in NYC in the 80sm the unvarnished honesty of being a young woman. I love this show and the character of Hannah.

My daughter is on the west coast too - but that "all things are possible" thing goes for twenty-somethings everywhere, don't you think?

Oh yes, I do agree, they are "true believers", it's amazing. And inspiring; we lose a lot of that as we go through the gamut.

If young women were really like this, they'd be more fun than they are.

It definitely makes me think of my 20s and all of the fun and bad decisions. It's such a brave and smart show especially how comfortable Lena Dunham is with showing her body.

It doesn't matter how old you are. I'm 52 and can relate to a lot of the universal truths in the show: The importance of embracing yourself for what you are, the fact that confidant/strong woman can be enormously attractive, and that we can find ourselves in crazy/preposterous situations at any age.

I've heard nothing but good things about Girls. I haven't caught more than a few moments of an episode here or there myself. Sounds like I need to give it a go!

Hear, hear! I'm also in my 50's, and I also choose to take a "time machine" back when I watch "Girls." I especially like the fact that Dunham doesn't look like a fashion model but looks like the healthy young woman that she is.

When I saw her I marveled greatly.

I've not watched, but I gather that it's about each and every young woman continually having sex whenever with whoever, and only occasionally feeling stupid for doing so. Sounds about right. Right?

Not at all. Yes, there is a lot of sex - but there's so much more to it than that. The amount of sex and nudity makes some people uncomfortable and can distract from the spot-on writing and well-developed characters.

Ok, but what I mean is that being able to continually have sex whenever whoever etc is what is THE typical characteristic of modern young women that you laud Girls for honestly expressing, and that it accurately reflects your experiences and basically every other young woman's experiences ever since the sexual revolution. Better?

That line got to me also. I'm another decade away from the ages of these girls and I love the show.

Beautifully expressed, Sharon. I've not watched the show, but will now. Sometimes real life is the hardest thing to show -- we had behind the curtain of fear. What will people think of us? It sounds like Lena Dunham has incredible courage. Thanks for inspiring me to watch!

This is so awesome!! It's really great to hear that it's not just my age bracket that relates to Girls. This article is such a great reminder that we are all connected by this crazy roller coaster that is being a young woman in her 20s, even if we've already experienced that or if we're in the middle of experiencing it right now. And it's not just women of different ages, but also women of different cultural and financial backgrounds too. One of the things that made me absolutely fall in love with Girls is that it somehow captures the universal journey that young women go through in a way that isn't defined by socioeconomic status. The events and relationships during a woman's 20s may be unique to each person, but the insecurities, vulnerabilities, and mentalities throughout this stage of life are things we share as women. As a 22-year-old, I've only just begun this crazy journey and yet I feel like I've experienced so much already! I'm excited (& maybe a little anxious) to see what the next few years are going to bring. But it's so cool to hear that women at different stages of life are relating to the same things I am too. And I think that's part of the magic of the world Lena Dunham has created.
