Maybe you've heard about the Instagram hotel, or the Twitter hotel. Gimmicks? Well, okay. But they're signs that hotels understand the need to include digital elements and convenience into the before, during and after of your next getaway.

As our dependence upon devices grows, hotels are keeping pace. For instance, the use of mobile websites jumped to 76% from 60% last year. There's even a "smart hotel" in the UK where guests can not only book rooms and check in via an app, but control their whole experience, from room temperature to light settings.

And they're tapped into the latest social trends to attract new guests, from Instagram and Vine contests to personalized tips via Pinterest.
