This is the second in a three-part series. Part 1 can be seen here.
Bill Richardson spent Friday, October 5, in Atlanta, GA, where he chartered a Spanish-named campaign infrastructure in a state with its fair share of anti-immigrant sentiments; had a lonely lunch at the Varsity; and, in a bit of a switch, helped local Democrats raise a little money for their efforts here at home.
After visiting with the Georgia Tech Young Dems, Bill Richardson stopped for lunch at the Varsity, an Atlanta must-see in the world of fast food. However, the greasy food wasn't the only thing causing the Richardson campaign heartburn: a second-tier Democrat apparently can't draw more than a dozen or so supporters, a sad showing compared to the way Mitt Romney packed the joint to the gills.
I asked Gov. Richardson how he plans to break out of the cursed second tier...and got the usual talking points in return: guns, governors, and getting out the message. Note to Bill: I'm not sure referencing Jimmy Carter as a reason to vote for a governor like you is such a great idea. You want a second term, don't you?

Shelby, this is series is great...thanks for covering the Gov. Im trapped at my desk slogging it out for the 401K and I really appreciate your efforts to be where we all can't be. I did make the scene later.. but 4 on a friday is a truely obxious time to try and be anywhere in this town. The GA Tech event video was great too.
Thanks again.
You are so right on the Second Tier. For months both here and on other sites I find that the majority of people are hoping to support someone other than the top tier in either Republican or Democratic groups. The only person in the Top Tier I could support is John Edwards, in either party. In the bottom tier I would like to hear more from Richardson and Huckabee. Neither of these candidates if probably perfect on all points, but we will not have a perfect nominee in either party. Ron Paul we all admire but he seems too big a change agent--back to the Founding Fathers--good but like turning ann ocean liner in mid Atlantic. Kucinich less extreme than Paul?
I really would like to have Huckabee and Colbert--but Richardson might team up with Jon Stewart.
I'm thinking Bill Richardson for Secretary of State. He'd make a great one. He's pulled off a number of skillful diplomatic coups in the past. He may be thinking along these lines as well.
The so-called 2d tier is a creature of the mainstream media. It is the major reason the opportunities presented by the 1st 4 states, retail politics, are so important. They don't necessarily produce the best President, but they prevent the MSM from making the choice for us. Richardson has actually emerged from the bottom pack, so he is a possible dark horse. After those 4 states, if he or Obama emerge as the alternative to Hillary, Feb 5th will be an interesting day. The name of the game is really DELEGATES. Personally, I'd like to see a true contest that persists into the late Spring. Wishful thinking, perhaps.
I agree that people are not going to respond to his message if it is "people like Governors".
Stephen Colbert said he'd accept Mike Huckabee's choice of him for V-P running mate. Richardson needs to tell us who he'd chose as his V-P and Cabinet mates. That might spark some interest in his campaign.
Why doesn't Huckabee get more coverage? I don't know his issues very well, but even Clinton says he's the Repub dark horse and is charming and talks really well.
I'm glad he went. It shows that he's brave enough to campaign in areas where Democrats might not be so popular. Unlike the Republican candidates that can't campaign in front of minorities...
