Bill Maher: Another Hollywood Sellout

[UPDATE: Please see Sheldon Drobny's retraction acknowledging that Ann Coulter is not in fact scheduled to appear on the Aug. 25th premiere of "Real Time With Bill Maher."]

In my previous posts I have written about all the hypocrites in Hollywood who claim that they are doing something for the powerless majority of suffering Americans. They talk a lot about helping the unfortunates who have been oppressed by corporate America while at the same time they are making millions of dollars doing business with the devil. I have given up on these rich cats. Everyone that is doing business in Hollywood entertainment is first and foremost promoting their own financial interests. The latest example is Bill Maher.

I read that his first guest on his new season starting tomorrow is Ann Coulter. I do not mean to interfere with Bill's sex life, but give me a break. Either she is totally self promotional or she is a psychopath spewing hatred across the media. In either case, Maher's audience should cringe at the sight of her on his show. Maher's explanation about his "libertarian" views requiring him to portray all points of view is a cop-out. He calls himself a libertarian because he does not have the courage to say that he may be a progressive. Most of the people who call themselves libertarians don't even understand what a libertarian believes in. But "Mr. politically incorrect" wants you to think that he is a libertarian.

Maher became a sellout when he apologized for making "politically incorrect" statements about the 9/11 hijackers. When you have a show called "Politically Incorrect" there should be no need for apologies since that is the name of your show. And don't give me that crap about the world was very different after 9/11. What Maher did was to suck up to his corporate masters and he was fired anyway. What he said on his show was absolutely true. It takes a lot of courage to give up your life for a cause. It takes no courage to drop missiles and bombs on a helpless civilian population. Had Maher stuck to his guns, he would have served himself and the cause of free speech better. Instead, he was gutless. Had he stood his ground, he may have put a little dent into the Bush campaign to terrorize its citizens and give up their 1st Amendment rights.

I do think that Maher is very talented and politically astute. I had forgiven him for his lack of courage about his 9/11 remarks and became a regular Friday night viewer. But, this is over the top. He might as well have asked Eva Braun to be a guest on his premiere show. His audience will not be incentivized to view his show because of Coulter's appearance. So he is either doing it to enhance his sex life or for some financial or promotional quid pro quo. Either way he is making a mistake and I will not watch his show any more. He does not deserve the loyal viewers he has when he rationalizes Ann Coulter's right to free speech because he is a so-callled libertarian.
