McCain's Blue Dress

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

We will probably never know if John McCain had an affair with that pretty blonde lobbyist, as suggested by the New York Times today, and in my heart of hearts I don't give a damn. I know there are some out there who are still worrying about the sex life of Warren G. Harding and John F. Kennedy, but I am not among them. In the case of McCain and his lady lobbyist, they will both deny it and there is no way of proving it. It will probably remain more of a smudge than a stain on the McCain name. But, of course, as a committed Democrat I do care, in so far as it punches a hole in his egregious campaign as flag-bearer of Republican morality. Personally, I think his physical and political embrace of George W. Bush was the most lewd and obscene act this guy could commit, proving that it was easier for him to withstand years of torture by the Viet Cong than resist his own tortured political ambitions. I wouldn't care about McCain's sex life if he wasn't the soon-to-be nominee of the Republican Party; the party who cared more about the stains on Monica's blue dress than about Americans who couldn't afford a new dress or shoes for their kid's first day at school.

So, if, like McCain, you're the guy who knows better, but you turn your back on your own moderate beliefs and swallow whole the right's agenda on social, economic and foreign policy, indeed, if you contribute to that agenda, you leave yourself open to newspapers and ordinary folks like me saying, "John, we hardly knew ye!" Or did we know you? And do you know better? Weren't you one of the Keating Five, a politician who took big favors from and advanced the cause of a corrupt Savings and Loan company and barely escaped the fallout of its wreckage? Weren't you the guy who made ugly jokes about the looks of the young Chelsea Clinton? Weren't you the guy who left his wife to marry the beer heiress, Stepford Cindy, who is so proud to be an American that she was obliged to break her long vow of silence and take a whack at the words of Michelle Obama? As Henry Kissinger proved to us when he went about with beautiful starlets, power is a great aphrodisiac, and McCain, having reached great power in the Senate, should be allowed the usual senatorial hanky-panky as part of the perks that come with his arduous job: the free airplane rides, hot tickets to sporting events, and charming a gullible mainstream press on the campaign trail, while back-tracking on former political beliefs in the greater cause of making John McCain POTUS.

Is the Senate Ethics Committee going to investigate? Seems like this could be a serious conflict of interest.

Is it too late to nominate Huckabee, who would be a tougher candidate for the Democrats to defeat?

Otherwise, hello President Obama...

That sums it all up for "the maverick".

Excellent post, indeed. Yellen puts into words everything I've been thinking about McCain for over 8 years. This man is not leader-of-the-free-world material.

John McCain's political history is loaded with abuse of his position concerning lobbyists. Since posting actual links is against HuffPo policy, do the simple research yourself.

Look into the forcible removal of the Dineh tribes, known as the Navajo, in Arizona. Follow his ties to Atty John Boyden and the Peabody Western Group (nka Peabody Energy) and their advantages gained from McCain's legislation S1973-1 and S1003. He pushed Atty Gen Reno in forcing them off their treaty lands and onto
a nuclear waste site (Church Hill, Nevada) through the "Relocation Commission" Look up PL 93-531. Genocide for the expansion of mining rights. Follow the money that supported his political career from the energy elites that own the Mohave Generating Station in Nevada. John McCain is a corrupt politician and the evidence is there to prove it.

Get your facts straight. The first Re-location Act was passed in 1973 and was done to address the gross injustices done to the Hopi Tribe by the US Government and Navajos over the period from 1882 to 1973. The Navajos had squatted on and illegally occupied Hopi land ever since the 1882 Hopi Reservation was created. McCain actually showed some statesmanship by introducing legislation to fund the re-location of those individuals (99% Navajos) who were illegally occupying Hopi land. McCain has been a friend to both Hopi and Navajo and his efforts to resolve an ugly mess created by 100 years of BIA (US government) incompetence should be applauded.

There is no Church Hill, Nevada. Navajos were re-located to many different communities, most of them on Navajo land. Many were re-located to Flagstaff, AZ but moved right back to where they came from in a couple of years. The entire re-location experience was a tragedy for both Hopis and Navajos, who generally get along well although their cultures are radically different. You are probably referring to Church Rock, NM where there was a nasty spill of uranium tailings down the Rio Puerco in 1981. As far as I know, no Navajos were ever re-located to this area.

If people want to find a smoking gun in McCain's past, look up the Keating 5 scandal. Charles Keating was one of the early self-righteous Republican religious freaks (Catholic, not evangelical Protestant) who bought off a handful of Senators to pimp for his bogus savings & loan. McCain has frequently acknowledged that this affair was the low point in his life and once the press starts digging up the bones of this scandal, McCain will be done.

Plan A pt.1:

Humanize the candidate. Create the illusion that someone finds him sexy. Stay in the news even if you have to manufacture controversy yourself.

Plan A pt.2:

When serious events occur like a new war, revert to the responsible, wise old soldier.

Spot on. But one thing you left out of this: unlike Monica L, who offered President Clinton an apparently-needed diversion at no cost to policy, Vicki I appears to have gotten some favorable legislation in exchange for her warm company. Even if McCain "did not have sexual relations with that individual", he appears to have had an intimacy more consequential to our country - and in stark contradiction to his avowed position vis a vis lobbyist. Much as Senator Craig made marginalizing homosexuals from the benefits of society as he played footsy with other men in public restroom, has McCain committed similar hypocrisy?

Loved the article. Now if we could just get someone to pin him to all the other lobbyists running his campaign. Let us never forget what he has done to the Dineh tribes of Arizona with his "friends" at Peabody Energy. Seems very interesting that his new energy bill with Leiberman will benefit all the coal industry elites and nail the taxpayers of the future generations in America. John McCain is a puppet.
And a bad puppet at that. It's too bad the American people are so naive about his corrupt lobbyist connections.

I love the image of McCain and Obama squaring off in a debate. This old, stubby, stiff, little white man across from a young, tall, graceful brown man.

Here's another image: McCain debating Bloomberg. Two old short white men who aren't great speakers, but one has the better mind and is also walking the talk.

If Obama has one tenth of the courage and commitment that John McCain has displayed, we will be a very lucky country indeed. What the hell do looks have to do with anything? Being young, tall, graceful and brown do not make you qualified to be president. Otherwise Michael Jordan would have been elected in the '80's.

mombabytiger... that's a foolish and ignorant statement. But you aren't alone in saying it. People who think like you need to consider this:

Compare working against huge odds when you're neighbors are doing little to nothing... like most anti war activists, neighborhood activists, vote system reformers, etc., with what it takes to go to flight school, get a decent salary and benefits and recognition of your peers, and having the might of the American flag behind you every day.

Which situation do you really, in your heart of hearts, think takes more courage?

It takes incredible courage to work on the streets and be an activist? Or to campaign for peace every day like thousands of Americans do every day of their lives? I say they are real heroes as much as our soldiers... who I am happy to also praise. But they are not the only ones who are "brave" by any means.

Both kinds of work takes guts, but I don't see anyone recognizing the work of people who work their hearts out for the nation or their own communities... or giving them pensions, lifetime healthcare, etc. Even 60 years later recognition of white and black civil rights workers is still marginal... and VietNam protesters are still derrided... although virtually everyone now knows they were right on.

Aside from the occasional successes the bring with their causes, material benefits are rare for political-ideological activists unless they're the one or two in 10,000 who run for office and get elected... but God knows they ALL deserve it.

I think it is a beauty contest, at least since politics sold its soul to TV. Why is it that a short, bald, and dumpy guy is never even considered as presidential timber? Is it possible that all of the intelligent, capable men in our government are trim with full heads of hair? Or is it that the short-bald-and-dumpies of similar talent and accomplishment just don't look appealing enough? If Henry Waxman looked like George Clooney, he'd already be president.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:20 PM on 02/21/2008

You're right, it's not a beauty contest; this election is about the future of the country. And the future has nothing to do with re-living the Vietnam War or rehashing a 1980s vintage Republican agenda that has nothing new to offer. Angry white male, move aside. The demographic trends are not in your favor; like it or not, with every passing year the proportion of the population you represent will shrink, as (oh no!) the percentage of the population that is non-white steadily increases, and young people from all backgrounds turn away from the Republican Party's simplistic, atavistic ideology. This is the juxtaposition between Obama and McCain, between a hopeful, vibrant future that embraces progress and a tired mentality that is struggling in futility against it.

When you have a candidate like McCain who acts like he is the moral standard bearer of the world, I think it is quite instructive that he may have had an extramarital affair... After all, it wouldn't be the first time... That's admitedly (on MSNBC Biography) how the current Mrs. McCain staked her claim while he was still married to his first wife. Remember her? The one who held down the fort and prayed for his safe return during his many years as a P.O.W. I'd love to know who she's voting for. Things that make you go hmmmm!

Not only did McCain probably have an inappropriate relationship with this lady - which I couldn't care less about - but she's a lobbyist that was doing business with McCain's Senate committee - which I DO care about. Rank and file Republicans already don't like McCain, they've just needed a reason; now, McCain has given them the reason. They won't vote for Obama or Hillary, but they'll sure as hell stay home in November.

Who were they going to support, Clinton or Obama? You know that eventually they were going to back McCain. This just gives them a convenient way to do it and allows them to bash the "LIBERAL NY Times". Now that's a phrase they love to say, O'Reilly probably loves saying it even more than he loves whispering "lynching party" while rubbing himself with a loofah.

This is a win/win for the conservatives talkers. Hey maybe Rush and Hannity are the anonymous sources!!

Men and women react differently to this issue. As a woman, I don't admire a man who is unfaithful to his wife.

The time to air any allegations of adultery is before a man is elected president. In Bill Clinton's case, it destabilized the presidency to have Paula Jones' suit go forward, and for Linda Tripp to record and reveal her conversations with Monica Lewinski.

And John McCain's past is loaded with it. The media has been protecting him so far. Hopefully this little rehashed lobbyist/adultery story will get them off their censorship path and start telling the truth about the real john mccain. Look into Congressman Wayne Owens and Peabody Western Group for his UN Violations and Genocide of the Dineh-Navajo tribe forcibly relocated to Church's Hill, Nevada...a nuclear waste site.
These peoples were possible the parent culture of all Native Americans, and McCain brutalization and rights deprivation should be accounted for. cain2008.org for more truth about this demon.

The fallout of this is already happening, and it's the best news for this phony flyboy that's could possibly come along about now. Just for fun, I'd like an analysis of his body language from people who have made a study of it. I'm certainly not an expert, but here's what I've observed: The chopping downward arm action when he's making an emphatic point, the quick flash of a big smile that doesn't match the message, the stiff walk and trunk moves. But what is most striking to me is the interaction between Cindy and John and his dismissive moves as though she were someone he had to acknowledge because he was told he should. Just physically, though, his shoulders seem much broader than I can recall and his neck has disappeared. My read is that he's lying. But, you're right, he'll probably come out of this smelling like a petunia. The flyboy can continue living in his imagined role of a true American hero, a great American who has served his country with distinction, ad nauseum. The stink of death on the ground in Vietnam never reached him, and this much ado about nothing other than what a true phony he is will not hurt him. The word on the street is he's a ho.

Hmmm, screwing around on wife during while Governor, then during Presidency, yeah I guess that's the perfect set of values one wants!

You may want to check with the lawyer who looked into the Keating 5, Bob Bennett, who is by the way a Democrat. He said that only 3 of the 5 should have further investigations done and one in particular should be cut loose (John McCain), however "28 days of public hearings with just Democrats in the dock. So, it's probably the first time in the history of the Senate that they rejected the advice of their counsel to exonerate a senator." - Bob Bennett.
That's because the remaining 3 were Democrats.

As a twist on what 'veracal' said - Perfect Democratic values!!!!

There's no story. Did anyone that wrote about this "story" actually read the NYtimes article? If EVERYTHING was true about that article, all it means is that McCain and a female lobbyist got a little to cozy for PR comfort..NOT a "I did not have sex with that woman, Miss Iseman.."

Is Karl Rove working for the dems or the NYTimes now? I really expected better from a side that was so unethically smeared in 2004. The crap on DailyKos and other progressive blogs about McCain's wife, drudging up old addictions to Percocet (as if it were, say, lines of blow at Harvard A-HEM), calling her "Stepford", etc, JUST BECAUSE SHE SAID SHE LOVED HER COUNTRY??? She didn't smear Michelle Obama at all, but the floodgates opened. Shame on so many of you for not being any better than the Rightwing smear machine. No better.

You've got to say Donkslayer is right, this is a tone-setting moment in the first days of the national campaign, and the tone is 'everything's fair game'. Do we want that? Obama is not squeaky clean - simply because no-one is.

There's a chance, a slim chance, that these two men who trade on their decency could run a campaign of ideas and policies, which would probably do America as much good as the outcome itself. Today that chance just receded.

The left has thrown the first stone of the McCain Obama race. They may come to regret that.

Nor do I care what he does sexually. I do care about the hypocrisy of the Republican party in general with their moral majority and slander against homosexual community when they are pandering in public bathrooms and sexually soliciting interns and pages in Washington!

Here again we have a straight up guy, or so he says, McCain who is accused of selling his integrity for a piece of a beautiful woman. While I can understand his human weakness, his willingness to sell his position for a piece is just a reminder and a verification of who he really is and what he will do for personal gain.

Do we want more of the same in the white house? I don't think so. McCain would bring us more of the same, Clinton madness, Bush extremism. The American public, who has to work so hard to make ends meet and who does not have time for sex, does not want to finance these politician sexual perversions.
