The New York Times published an article this week about retired volunteers pitching in to patrol our skies and protect national security. This got me thinking about how many important jobs there are in our country that could be filled in a heartbeat by the 60+ crowd. Retirement, forced or elected, brings the chance to embrace careers most of us couldn’t sink our teeth into years ago.
I’d love to see underserved public schools look to the newly retired as a great source of teachers. With the kids out of the house and the opportunity to start anew, our nation’s most successful people can commit to a career in teaching. They can bring experience, patience and political savvy to our nation’s embattled schools.
