Jesus Was a Commie: An Interview With Matthew Modine

Posted: 11/09/11 04:27 PM ET

When Matthew Modine won the Founders Prize for Best Short Film at Michael Moore's Traverse City Film Festival he was asked, "Why did you title your film, Jesus Was a Commie?

His reply was simple: "Because I couldn't call it, Jesus Was a Capitalist."

The conversation isn't a question of whether Modine is against capitalism. (He's not.) Or, if he's a pro-Commie Red. (Also, no.)

"I am pro-integrity," says Modine.

He simply employs some old fashioned, uncomplicated common sense when crafting the thoughtful 15-minute short film/documentary/narrative. In "Jesus was a Commie," Modine examines the traditional ideas and interpretations of Jesus Christ and reveals an essence of communism in Christ's practices and philosophies.

"When words lose their meaning, people lose their freedom' says Modine, quoting Confucius." "Liberal is one of those words that has been pushed into a political context. The root of the word is liber, meaning free, something we Americans believe we have a special dominion over. The word "liberal" has been transformed by "conservatives" and "Republicans" to mean: communist, weak, homosexual, immoral, and just un-American. Jesus, depending on how you personally feel about him, is another word, or idea, belief, or ism that has been hijacked for political purpose. If you take the stories of Jesus and look at them without evangelical glasses, you see a man that questioned and challenged the conditions of life in his time. And it can be argued, and has been by a lot of incredible people, that Jesus was a Utopian Communist."

The notion of Jesus being a communist may feel like a tough cross for some to bear. While wandering around different beautifully-shot Manhattan locations (the Jerusalem of the West) and musing (through voiceover, with Modine's soothing voice of reason) about what communism really means, it's interesting to consider what "Full Metal Jacket's" Private Joker has come up with.

The blend of archival live action footage, featuring the Berlin Wall falling, followed by images of Gorbachev are classic visuals America's definition of communism.

But Modine probed further and began reading about the fall of communism.

In the early 1980's, Modine was in East Berlin before the wall came down.

"I was at the Berlin Film Festival and had the opportunity to cross Check Point Charlie and enter into East Berlin. It was from meeting Russian soldiers that I realized the lies and propaganda about Russian people that I had been taught. Like many Americans, I was taught to believe that this Evil Empire was prepared to take over the world and destroy life as we knew it. After actually seeing it and being there, I saw that these people were no different than my brothers and sisters at home. They shared the same fears and desires, and many of the same likes and dislikes as people at home. Just people that want to love and be loved. Radio Free Europe was the tool that was educating the Eastern German and Russian soldiers I met about life in the west. Radio Free Europe had no borders. The music of the 1960s floated wirelessly, without borders, across the Iron Curtain and influenced a generation of people to want a change in their country. The Utopian Communism didn't exist or work. The songs of protest, the songs of loving, the songs of rebellion that define 60s music opened the minds of those listening to it and it transformed their expectations of living. Ronald Reagan and the Cold War, the Arms Race, coincided with this new generation of young people that were about to transform their homeland. The change in the Soviet Union happened from within. Not because of Ronald telling Russia to 'take down the wall.'"

There are plenty of less liberal thinking folk who will check out after testimonies like Modine's. Here's what he read in the dictionary: "The origin of communism is 'common' which is a word filled with goodness."

Based on Jesus' kind actions, says Modine, he's essentially a dictionary definition communist. Historically the world has never seen dictionary definition Communism thrive as the infamous communist leaders of the world have indeed been distracted by their greed and hunger for power. Modine is considering that Jesus and his followers are the minority of those who truly lived by the gentle meaning of communism.

"When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist," Modine quotes, Brazilian archbishop Dom Helder Camara from the book Peace Behind Bars: A Peacemaking Priest's Journal from Jail.

Search words like "communism" and "Jesus Christ" when combined most certainly incite reaction in America, but Modine keeps his questioning relatively kosher. Instead, it's rather a complimentary piece for the Occupy Wall Street and Occupy Together movement spreading around the world.

"Occupy Wall Street doesn't have a single voice, a leader" says Modine. "It is an extraordinary demonstration of civil liberty and democracy. I do think that if there were a bearded, barefoot man speaking about peace, liberty, love, and turning the tables of the Wall Street Money Changers over, he would be "crucified" by the news media."

"Jesus Was A Commie" is an extension of Modine's ongoing quest for truth and philosophical answers to the questions he asks his friends and fans. Modine likes deconstructing words to question their meaning from the root and essence of the paired letters. Ultimately for Modine, communism is just a word.

The real conflict isn't semantics after all says Modine.

"The problem with many Christians is that they don't act like Christ."

I don't think he was a communist at all, I think he was an activist, poet and dreamer who thought in the communal and spoke too living with each other. To the best of my knowledge I haven't personally met the Man, the Myth, the Son of GOD but you wouldn't find me sitting ideally by in the street just watching his fate unfold I'll tell ya what ♄ you would be more likely to see me carrying a cross.

Food for thought "When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist,"

Have you donated to a food bank yet this year?

I had a revelation like that in a college contemporary political ideology class-when the professor discussed the goals of true Communism- I realized that I had been taught to fear and hate something by propaganda in my own country, that on paper was a very intelligent attempt to find a balance. Nothing to fear at all. Made me wonder why there were those that would fear it. Also I soon realized that many systems that were referred to as Communist were not. The problem being the human element put into the equation of the ideal. Then I explored the fear in our country and what may have fueled it. And it seemed it was the wealthy, who feared giving up their share. They used the godless aspect as an accelerant to fuel the fire of fear among the masses and the campaign of propaganda against it as a system. The one per centers may need to fear it but -the rest of us have nothing to fear but fear itself.
In Wil and Ariel Durant's histories- I read that the two words to describe capitalism are competition and profit. The two words for socialism, cooperation and service. The latter is obviously closer to describing the reputation Jesus.

I don't think Jesus was a communist per se, that is he wasn't advocating any human governmental system. He seemed to be trying to show everyone that in depending on and understanding God as He really is ("Love" see 1st John) and what he wants for his children (all good), that we can learn through proper worship how to find real treasures in heaven (spiritual ones) and having gained them, they provide for the here and now....as he showed in the feeding of the multitudes, telling a disciple where to find payment for taxes they owed (money in fish's mouth), changing water into wine (when supply had run out at a wedding). Those blessed by spiritual treasure, he expected would share with those who were still poor (in spirit) and help them gain spiritual treasure until they were able to take care of themselves and others. If it was communism -- it was a spiritual communism -- where infinite resources from God can be found available to all through diligent spiritual development, which does not depend on class, education, sex, heritage and certainly not bankers.

Communism doesn't invovle a "governmental system." Communism is a type of cooperative communal living where there is no government.

I've always loved Modine, he's been one of my favorite actors for...20 years? A really long time, at any rate. Birdy, Orphans, Full Metal Jacket, and even Vision Quest remain among my all-time favorite films, but this?

Really?

This whole thing, the fact that he made a film like this, the fact that he titled it the way he did, and speaks about it the way he does, and his comment here, reinforce that I ADORE HIM! So intelligent, he's a fellow searcher for truth and I have nothing but admiration for him--and a VERY strong desire to see this film.

I love and completely agree with what he said about the twisting of the word liberal, and I truly believe what he says about "many Christians." Jesus was never self-righteous and had no hate in his heart, except for the money-changers.

Go Matthew! Also? Please do some more acting, I've missed you!

That being said, I believe Jesus was a liberal-in the TRUE sense of the word. I long ago dropped any support of the political liberal movement as it has little in common with true liberalism and is a far cry from the ideology of Jesus.

Dictionary Definition of Liberal (http://www.thefreedictionary.com):

libĀ·erĀ·al (lbr-l, lbrl)
adj.
1.
a. Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry.
b. Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded.

Just like many fundamentalist christians are a far cry from what Jesus' vision of christianity was, most political Liberals today are a far cry from the truly liberal.

Communism is one of those movements that look good on paper but when actually attempted, are hiijacked by the human traits of power seeking and greed. Every time this has led communism on a direct downward path-the people lose more and more freedom, rights and wealth while the upper elites gain more and more power, control and wealth.

A society cannot function without leaders and communism is the same.

For an idea check out Orwell's books, "1984" and "Animal Farm" written by one who's been through it and seen the corruption that stems from communism.

What you're referring to what has not been communism. USSR, China, Cuba, etc were not communist. You can't have a communist "country" because communism is a type of community without a government. Those nations were/are attempts at being socialist societies, socialism being a necessary stage of a society's development until the people are ready for communism. Failed attempts as none ever were truly socialist. Socialism--per Marx--requires economic and political (e.g. electoral) democracy. Of all of their, none of those societies were politically democratic. Chile went down the road of true socialism with a democratically-elected socialst leader--Allende--but the US killed him for it. Nicarauga's Sandanista's tried ot be true socialists, but lost when they subjected their leadership to a true democratic vote (1990, I believe) and lost.

Orwell was commenting on Leftists, particularly the Soviets, in Animal Farm, but they were not communists and were failed/false socialists. They became dictators, and there was an elite class existed and was very privileged. 1984 was not merely about "communists/socialists" but about excessively powerful governments.

Jesus could be considered a communist. Hunter/gatherer tribes were close to communist.

yes, true, MUSTARDHEAD,
but what about the corruption that stems from capitalism?
well documented corruption. wall street bailouts to begin with. wars for oil. lies about "clean coal". the list of violence for "capital" gains (often disguised with the vail of fighting for "democracy") are too many.
capitalism isn't perfect. communism doesn't work (human greed).

so we must continue to work toward a system (egalitarian) that is fair.

i saw modine's film. that is what he is searching for. a noble search if ever there was one.
