Smokey Bear
Smokey Bear is the national wildfire prevention icon. Since 1944, Smokey Bear has been educating the public about the dangers of human caused wildfires and reminding them that 9 out of 10 wildfires are human-caused and therefore preventable. Smokey's slogan, "Only you can prevent wildfires" is recognized by 95% of adults and 77% of children in the US. He is administered by the USDA Forest Service, the National Association of State Foresters and the Ad Council. His name and image are protected by US Federal law in the Smokey Bear Act of 1952.

I turn 69 years old today! Sixty-nine years of wildfire prevention messaging and awareness, waving at parades, standing guard at campsites, showing people how to douse a campfire and even giving out #SmokeyBearHugs. Looking back, it's been one heck of a ride!
