'We're Losing Our Little Boy': One Family's Heartbreaking Fight For Their Son's Education

'We're Losing Our Little Boy': One Family's Heartbreaking Fight For Their Son's Education

“Society isn't willing to fund public schools properly to educate mainstream children, much less those with special needs. You frame the villain as the schools but the schools are funded by the people - and we all know this is all about the money. I do wonder, especially with autism, how much of this should be considered medical treatment - of course, that just shifts the buck to another funding source.

The one thing I couldn't stop thinking while reading this article is that the DC public schools are one of the last places I would go if serious about my child's education. I know not everyone has that choice and we should be thankful for the people who will tough it out and fight for what is right but before spending the kind of money this couple has, I'd try moving to another district.”

“This Is a bit misleading... Many (most) gelatins are now plant based - if your yoghurt, jello etc are kosher, it's vegetarian. It was much more difficult 20 years ago when lard was used more (including in many cookies, like oreos). Now, Guinness.... There are some things I'd rather not know. ;)”

CarlyQ on Sep 20, 2013 at 13:28:05

“That's what I thought, too. However, since labels still don't generally differentiate between animal and plant based gelatins, I tend to avoid those kinds of products entirely.”

“Santa Monica saw six dead if you include the gunman. He killed his father and brother, a father and daughter near the college and an older woman in the library where he was also killed. Many more could have been killed - he shot up a city bus while nearly 30 4th graders 20 yards away ran for cover with about a hundred school children at a park and he shot up the library while quick thinking college kids barricaded the walls of an inner study room. The media barely blinked.”

The eat was installed into a base ( that is shown in the video as well) I am sure you were the perfect first time mom though and got everything correct under the watchful eye of the world.  FYI An American car seat is illegal for use in Canada and the US. if in a crash you will be deemed to have improperly restrained your child.”

“Well, first, it's July. But no matter how cold it is, the bulk goes over the straps, baby under. Car seats come out of cars so you can bundle the baby, safely secured under the straps, while you are in the house and then walk out into the cold....”

“I feel for them - when I saw them leaving the hospital it reminded me how lucky we were that cameras weren't following us as we couldn't figure out how to het our newborn in the carseat (and my husband suggested we walk home!). But that baby isn't even remotely secured - he'd fly right out of there. Seems with all the help they need at their fingertips, someone would have caught this.”

“Eh, it doesn't actually work that way. My tiny home (1200 sq ft) is worth 200,000 but my lot (7000 sq ft) is worth 900,000 - location, location, location. And while we saw a modest downturn in home values during the recession ( which I believe was mostly caused by lack of financing and fluctuations in the jumbo loan definition and the fact that people did not have to sell) values around here are back up to 2007 prices and will continue to climb in the next few years. This isn't a recent trend - if you study home values over the last 40 years, the numbers make sense.”

Elementary School Bias Against Boys Sets Them Up For Failure: Study

Commented Jan 5, 2013 at 22:40:12 in Education

“I'm curious about whether there is a connection between class size and performance of boys in elementary school. It seems to me that as class size has risen (25 children to 1 teacher in kindergarten in this area), it has to be more difficult for teachers to teach children with more energy and less focus.

I've seen a series of studies that suggest class size doesn't matter but I'm very sceptical -- I don't think we are being fair to the teachers or the students.”

jmodell on Jan 7, 2013 at 14:45:46

“Yes, and let's not forget how many kids have self-regulation issues. Sometimes, this is due to poor parenting, sometimes to trauma or chronic stress, sometimes to developmental delays and conditions such as ADHD or autism, and sometimes to a combination of these. When schools and parents don't emphasize self-regulation techniques as a foundation to learning, and parents who ARE aware of their child's need for movement, time in nature, breaks from stimulation, etc., are constantly told "The school can't accommodate that," it's a problem for the student, his/her peers in the classroom, and the teacher.”

Gwenhevare on Jan 6, 2013 at 20:49:16

“Class size absolutely matters. I had 21 last year and 27 this year. I cannot get through as much content with the 27, everything takes that much longer. Everything is louder, you have more interruptions and students get less one on one time with the teacher.”
