“Inviting bullying? Why should my son accommodate for your bullies? How about we just teach our kids to be tolerant, instead? But no, making him live in fear of ridicule is much healthier.”

“Well, I'd probably do the second one. I'd make sure that, first and foremost, the people who bullied my son are reprehended. Fitting in isn't as important as it is to learn to be yourself. If someone is bullied for being poor, should they tell pretend to be rich? If someone is bullied for being naturally blonde, should they dye their hair? If a girl is bullied for playing football, should she quit? Absolutely not. Fitting in isn't nearly as important as being yourself is.”

“It would be the employer's fault if my child was qualified for the position. Your whole ideology is based on judging people based on how they look. I sincerely hope that you're never in a position to hire people. And that you don't have kids.”

evessourapples on Dec 14, 2012 at 13:25:04

“Ridiculous! You are pretending to be totally non-judgemental and "anything goes". Unfortunately for your son, I completed 5 interviews for healthcare jobs this morning. How would you feel if I sent a healthcare worker to your home to care for your helpless elderly mother dressed like a biker, a hip-hopper, or circus freak or a prostitute? You would be calling the agency so fast to tell us you are switching to another agency, while you lock up all your vauables and get dead bolts for your doors! So Please spare us thy sanctimony.”

“They were failing to be parents for letting their kid wear shoes that he likes? No, telling him to accommodate for bullies is bad parenting. I really hope you don't have children.”

kb0oya on Dec 15, 2012 at 10:03:49

“No you're absolutely right. Inviting bullying makes so much more sense. Why not let him wear a tu tu besides.”

cghatgsp on Dec 14, 2012 at 10:55:58

“Right on Lauren! I totally agree -- if everyone were to conform to what people believe society's percpetions are, we would never have had some of the world's most creative thinkers -- artists, scientists. Why be bound by "because that's how the world works." The article doesn't speak about what Sam experienced during his first day of school -- I would be interested to find out about that. Kids don't make judgements, particularly at that age -- they make judgements based on what their parents tell them.”

evessourapples on Dec 14, 2012 at 10:51:59

“Then when your kid comes home one day with earrings through their nose, lips and tongue with a big tattoo on their cheek and complains that no one will hire them, you can tell him that how unfair the mean employer is for not accepting his chosen style.”

HuffSusan on Dec 14, 2012 at 10:49:39

“Serving your child up on a silver platter for ridicule is being a bad parent.”

mugsy1340 on Dec 14, 2012 at 10:49:26

“OK, Lauren - I'm trying to follow your reasoning (and ignore the insult you lobbed just because someone's opinion is different than yours).

So, fast forward 8 hours - your child comes home in tears because some of the other kids said mean things to him because of his pink shoes with bows. Then, what? Do you tell your son that is the price of being a nonconformist? Or, do you go to the school and demand the teachers and administrators protect him from anyone who may make an unkind comment?

See - that's the problem. It's not a matter of "telling him to accommodate for bullies", and it's not bad parenting. Fitting in is important to children, and part of being a parent is steering your children to keep them from unnecessary ridicule.”

Darrell Hamlin on Dec 14, 2012 at 10:36:08

“I have kids and I don't give in to everything they like, so yes the parents can say no. That's whats wrong with kids today, parents are afraid to lay down the law and say no. Parents need to be parents and develop respect from their kids instead of being only their best friend.”

“Look at the facts. We're getting out of the recession and jobs are skyrocketing. Unemployment benefits is not a government thing, it's a company thing. Do you have any idea what you're talking about? That story just isn't true. Please, go educate yourself.”

Whathaveya on Dec 8, 2012 at 21:16:35

“Sorry forgot to mention that if the Government didn't force employers to pay these taxes then there wouldn't be any money for unemployment so technically it is a government thing. We as citizens get shafted because companies then raise the price of their goods to compensate for the money they have to pay in taxes.”

Whathaveya on Dec 8, 2012 at 20:22:46

“Jobs aren't skyrocketing. The holiday hire season is on that is why it looks as if jobs are up but they aren't. I never said unemployment was government funded. I said Obama sorry President Obama even if I can't stand the fool I will do my best to respect the title he bought himself. President Obama is making it so the lazy effers collecting unemployment don't even have to be seeking new work in order to collect the money. Now if the employees paid the taxes into the system and then sat on their As ses while collecting then I would say more power to you because that is your money to collect however you want. BUT when its the employer that gets charged the taxes and the employees get to sit around and do nothing then but still collect it thats just wrong. And WHAT story isn't true? The one I told about people turning down work cause they are lazy and still have unemployment coming is TRUE. So go educate yourself.”

“"Obama is doing a great job" PLEASE GET REAL. This Countries economy is tanking people are out of work and lazy as ever because they figured why work when Obama says I can get unemployment without even looking for work. LAZY A'S. There I do have something else to whine about. Now go back to work you people.”
