Senate Takes Aim At Insurance Company Executive Pay

Senate Takes Aim At Insurance Company Executive Pay

Commented Dec 05, 2009 at 12:27:15 in Business

“"The amendment would not specifically limit how much insurance executives' could be paid, but how much of their pay companies could deduct as a business expense." Way to go! Hot dog, this is what is needed. NOBODY in insurance deserves a salary of $1,000,000 or more. That comes out of people's hides and cuts claim payment.”

Nosybear replied on Dec 05, 2009 at 14:17:09

“I disagree with capping salaries but I also disagree with letting these guys plunder at will. Allow them to be paid as much as the companies want - it's a signaling mechanism to other companies that all our CEOs are above average (with a nod to Garrison Keillor). But then raise the marginal tax rate on individuals only to some commensurate figure, say 98%. With ownership of equities converted to income on the individual's death. No one needs the amounts of money these guys are making to live. Taxing their incomes at very high marginal rates would not affect either their lifestyle or the company's signaling of the prowess of their CEO but it would recycle that money back to the rest of us.”

efmo replied on Dec 05, 2009 at 14:12:43

“I know - that is the most amazing thing - this is closing a tax loophole for the business - that should be the issue - is this an appropriate tax deduction for mega corporations. I wonder how many small busineses/ med businesses pay their owners/execs this kind of money - so if they are worried about continuing to deduct the salaries/perks of their operators & that causes them to idenitify with these mega corporations & continue to protect these types of tax loopholes. If the business is doing well, it can pay its execs any salary it wants - it just can't cost shift mega compensation packages to other taxpayers.”

“Yes. Not a Good Day To Die, the book that dissects the stupid Tora Bora operation on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, clearly states that Rummy and Wolfowitz advised the "resident" that our army attack and take Iraq's oil fields instead of completing the mission in Afghanistan. That's PNAC for you. The force cobbled together to accomplish the Shahikut valley mission could not have been done in a worse way for our troops, all because of Rummy's Pentagon's restrictions and assumptions. Afghanistan was history, why did they need all of those troops and that equipment? Conventional warfare was so 20th century. Commanders and troops tried and brave men died.”
