Obama's Afghanistan Plan: 30,000 Troops, No Endless Committment

“Mr. President, I am one of your admirers and I think you are a fine man. Having said that, I think you should greet the certain-to-be many dead on their return home. I am glad the committment isn't open ended but 30,000 more is a pretty big committment when I think our troops should just come home.”

“Do we really know this?”

soldiergirl replied on Dec 01, 2009 at 19:41:18

“What I do know is that the family is notified even before the servicemember's body leaves the country, so therefore there is no way the letter could make it all the way from OCONUS to the servicemember's mother's home before she was officially notified. When I was over there, the mail didn't travel that fast anyway. Even so, it still wouldn't make it to the house before she was notified. This does make me wonder, so call me a skeptic, too. I think that I'd be so overjoyed, knowing that my child was still alive that money would be the farthest thing from my mind.”

cheeriogirl replied on Dec 01, 2009 at 16:47:14

“Yes. A takes seven days for a letter mailed in Iraq to arrive in Minnesota. This soldier's mom would have learned of her son's death via an official military visit. WELL BEFORE she would have received any mail notification returning from Iraq.

Besides, check out the article. If seeing this was as traumatic as she says, why is she holding it for the newspaper article?

EPIC FAIL mom. Try and enjoy the fact your son is alive, despite this not being the cash cow you had hoped for.”

“Did something say she wasn't? Could you walk a mile in her shoes and try to feel as she did when she thought her son was dead?”

bcnu2 replied on Dec 01, 2009 at 17:20:01

“If I were to walk a mile in her shoes I think I'd probably sue the shoe company for pain and suffering....~wink~”

alarmbell replied on Dec 01, 2009 at 16:38:36

“I find it interesting how you interpreted Girlnextdoor's comment, to mean that hte mom wasn't happy to find out her kid was alive. She obviously meant that the happiness she must have felt upon learning her child was alive should have been more important than suing for money.

I agree that there was emotional distress, and it seems harsh that a letter would return stamped Deceased, which is very cold. However, I would settle for a big apology rather than sue. Suing should be reserved for when maliciousness or negligence causes injury or death. Here, it was an unfortunate, yet temporary, distress, and everyone was alive and well.”

“At the end of her speech the entire crowd yelled "Hallelujah" and in a frenzy ran out to be baptized, NOT. This is so sad. Her particular creed may require her to "witness" but it was so out of place. I was at a meeting once where a member of the group did the same thing and I'm not sure the group has met since because it was so inappropriate. It makes people uncomfortable.”

“Who fought against Medicare from the getgo?”

Fotios replied on Dec 01, 2009 at 11:12:57

“GOP fought against Medicare. Dems fought against Medicare Advantage (privatization of Medicare).

GOP has been schizophrenic when it comes to Medicare. In general they are against it, except for when the taxpayer money goes into private plans. However, they are too chicken to actually reform it. When the GOP grows a pair and actually backs their words up with actions when it comes to cost cutting, I might start to take them seriously. But until then, they are just a bunch of confused fools.”

“I've always thought it was just that Bush & Co. were so inept but I guess they could hardly be that inept. It's always been right there in front of our faces and we've given W the benefit of the doubt because deliberately letting BL get away and killing a bunch of American troops in a failed venture might be treasonous. What US president could commit treason by giving aid and comfort to the enemy? But there it is. What other explanation is there? It certainly also explains why W's people refused to heed the pre-9/11 warnings and allowed that horror to unfold. Stupid is forgiveable but evil is not.”

“Right you are drummer. Because people are so busy sometimes all it takes is for someone in your neighborhood to take the lead. So, here's a suggestion for the less busy among us. Print flyers to hand out to your neighbors (just a block or two. It doesn't have to be a big deal). Ask them to put non-perishables out on their porch on a certain day. Pick the items up and leave a thank you note. Take the food to the soup kitchen or pantry in your community. Do this once a month...you will be amazed what a difference you will make. Not only will you be helping feed the hungry but affecting change in your neighborhood. People really do want to share but most are just too darn busy. Oh and one more thing if you have children let them help.”

“If you read about Operation Anaconda it may sicken you as it did me. Can you imagine putting SEALs into the mountains to fight alongside SF, never having trained together, under-equipped, under-manned, with no real air support? Or, can you imagine our slow-moving big helicopters flying into fire from heavy machineguns? Or, how about relying on tribal leaders to stop Bin Laden? Or, the cherry on top of the sundae, how about a one star Air Force general as a commander for such a land operation? Inept planning is the kindest thing I can call it, but it was really murder of our troops up in those mountains. Brave men did their best but they might as well have tried to empty the ocean with a spoon. What a horrific waste.”
