Tiger's Brand Bogey

Commented Dec 07, 2009 at 02:51:41 in Media

“What goes on Tiger's private life should have no effect on his professional life. He is one great golfer. Unfortunately, his private life is now becoming very public, and this new Tiger will force some major corporations to reconsider the efficacy of their endorsement, and their continued association with him.

Some of the current advertisements hawking Tiger Woods in major magazines are not, totally inappropriate. They won't run again. Welcome to the new paradigm.

It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you'll do things differently -- Warren Buffett”

Will Gay Troops Get to Join the Debate About Their Own Service to America?

Commented Dec 05, 2009 at 00:31:02 in Politics

“To William L: Military objectives are not always what is best for the country.

The United States as a country, and Americans as a people, would have been much better off had we never ventured into Iraq or Vietnam.

When tens of millions of American people are opposed to a war, it is usually for a good reason. Eventually, the reasons for their opposition become evident.”

“Back in the days of VHS rental, there was a chain store that displayed all of their videotapes in alphabetical order, no matter what the genre. I complained about the lunacy of that system, only to be told that it gave customers exposure to more films, than if they were separated in various genre.

Of course, that chain's ignorance about customer's preferences forced it into bankruptcy long before the dawn of DVDs.

Will this same strategy be a death knell for Border's? We'll see.”

“I thought the draft worked pretty well in Vietnam, because without the draft, the war might have gone on for much longer. I think if we, as a country, are initially told the truth about a situation, rather than being lied to, as we were in Vietnam and Iraq, you just might find enough people who would be willing to serve their country.

However, since we were heavily lied to (in both Iraq and Vietnam) the real burden is on the volunteer army to do more than their share. If the economy were in better shape now, the military would not be nearly as popular.

End the war, and bring back the draft, and make everyone serve. Hopefully, we'll have fewer useless wars, e.g., Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, Iraq. etc.”

“Achieving military objectives and cultivating civilian opposition to foriegn combat opperations, war-are too different things.

Advocating the draft in order to end a war you do not agree with in interesting. Self serving and counter to achieving military objectives but is interesting.”

“It seemed to work ok in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Of course, there was a much greater sacrifice among the general population due to having people from all walks of life. I say bring it back. Then we'll see a much larger anti-war movement.”

WilliamL replied on Dec 03, 2009 at 12:34:46

“You can not lumb WWII and Korea and Vietnam into the same pile. It def. did not work so well in Veitnam.

Your concerns are an "anit-war" movement and not an effective military.

If you have ever had a conversation with an active duty, career military, you would know that the last thing they want to do is deal with a draftee who does not want to be there.

An effective military and an "effective" anti-war movement are two different things.
You can not blame the lack of an anti-war movement due to the lack of a draft.

If anything, there is no draft, there are plenty of people with plenty of time to conduct anti-war actions.”

Memo to Warren Buffett: Put Down the Pom-Poms and Tell Us the Truth About the Economy

Commented Nov 17, 2009 at 00:53:23 in Business

“to interoctave: Had I even made six figures, I would have saved at least 50%. I never even came close to that, but I managed to save at least 15% of my income each year for over 20 years, and I haven't made a car payment in over 27 years. It can be done if you budget properly, and don't try to impress your neighbors. I hope you find work soon, but my questions are, when you were making six figures, did you spend a lot more than you saved? Did you think it would last forever?”

interoctave replied on Nov 17, 2009 at 02:37:48

“To 1logicalthinker:
You wrote: "...when you were making six figures, did you spend a lot more than you saved? Did you think it would last forever?"

I could get into the details of the costs of living in California on one paycheck, or I could add that my wife has been diagnosed by MS, and I could go over my budget and expenses with you over the last twenty years. But to look at what I saying above and ask "Did you think it would last forever?" shows that you are both missing the point and attempting to place blame. I believe your intentions are good, but I find your question slightly insulting as well as naive.”
