“For the people who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own, I have a lot of sympathy. I grew up in the Detroit area, and I know what some of those people are going through now, with the collapse of the auto industry. I have much sympathy for their situation, and for other people in other parts of the country in similar situations.

However, I don't have much sympathy for these people:

The people who thought their home was an ATM machine and constantly pulled out their equity to pay for their "toys."
The people who bought McMansions on speculation.
The people who ignored the certainty of a fixed mortgage because adjustable rate mortgages were much cheaper, knowing it was a gamble. They lost.
The people who flipped houses, thinking it would last forever. It didn't!

I don't think fiscally responsible people should have to pay for their mistakes.”

“Unlike Bob or Sally in your hypothesis, my new mortgage payment will lower my monthly payments to exactly $530.36 per month, as I did not take out any equity, but just refinanced the old balance.

Also, I have enough savings because I have been saving/investing at least 15% per year since the 80s. Incidentally, 1982 was the last time I ever made a car payment, because I actually saved up money BEFORE I bought new cars. What a concept!

And yes, I've had great luck with BofA, thank you.”

“Stephanie, I'm sorry to hear about your experience with Bank of America. I wish you luck in finding a better bank. I totally understand your position.

As for me, I've been a satisfied customer of BofA since 1984. In fact, tomorrow, my 15 year refi loan at 4.25% is scheduled to fund with BofA. They have been working with me every step of the way. I could not have asked for a more professional group of people.

Naturally, I will be staying with BofA, not because of the actions of the corporation, some of which I disapprove, but because of the way the representatives of BofA treat me, as one of their customers. On that, I have no complaints at all.”

“It is time we all stood back from self interest for a moment and consider the big picture. It is great that B of A bank employees treat you well. However, the question to consider is how are they treating Americans as a whole? These big banks have nearly destroyed our way of life and abuse more people than they help. They set out to create policies that trick people out of their money and, now, their homes.

Until we the people as Americans decide by our collective actions that humanity over profit is the key directive in the next century, the abuses will continue and they will catch up to you eventually.”

Bob got a 15 year mortgage and put all his extra cash into it.

Sally got a 30 year mortgage with a lower payment and saved her extra cash.

Five years later, they both lost their jobs.

Bob could not make his next mortgage payment, because he didn't have savings. He lost his home to foreclosure.

Sally, even though she still owed more on her mortgage than Bob, had savings set aside, and kept paying her mortgage, and got to keep her house.
