You simply think because it omits discussion of every other wrongful act committed by religion then it is biased. An article about injustice does not have to mention every other injustice in order to be valid.”

“He does not. He claims it does not have everything to do with religion, which is a rather different thing. Religious Jews believe that the land was given to them by God after the exodus. But the majority of Jews are not religious. In fact there may be more atheist jews that theist jews. This is true in Israel as well as among the diaspora. But even atheist jews, that is ethnic jews who pride themselves on their heritage but believe that Moses was a fictional character, tend to feel an affinity to Jerusalem for reasons of heritage. And now that Israel exists, they feel an affinity towards Israel which would exist even without the history issue. This is an ethnic thing.

Wright is not claiming that religion is irrelevant to the situation. He is arguing against the quoted Dawkins claim that without religion the problem would go away. (But then what does Dawkins take the alternative to be. The Palestinians are not traditionally very religious. They have supported Hamas only because the PLO failed to end occupation. Without religion one would expect a more radical nationalist group to have sprung up in Hamas' place, not a peace movement. And would the right-wing Israeli settlers be pacifists without religion or would they be atheistic right wingers? The latter seems more likely).”
