“Look closely at the picture of the two women in frame together - Couric's mouth and smile are up-turned at the corners, indicating a lifetime of natural ease and good humor, while Crowley's is sour, tight and down-turned, indicating just the opposite. I personally never find dourness and mean-spiritedness as reflected in one's features remotely attractive. Case in point - SP...”

“Music absolutely IS NOT a confidence destroyer - I have been playing guitar for over 30 years - long enough to know that I have ABSOLUTELY no talent, but instead have incrementally improved from where I would allow no one to hear me play (I am a merciful soul) to receiving the compliments of others who mistakenly believe I DO have talent. The guitar is a VERY forgiving instrument and BUILDS confidence with just a little effort. I've always looked at it as being a lot like masturbation - one gets about as much pleasure out as one puts effort in...”

“Having studied classical viola performance in college, I can tell you that standing on a stage is terrifying, and screwing up is devastating. Having also studied the guitar, I can say that strumming the blues is not the same thing as playing Bach or Dimebag. I'm talking about living dangerously, performing past your comfort zone, putting yourself on the spot for all the marbles, not the false bolstering one gets from playing a Beatles song well. You have to put it all out there on stage; you have to feel emotionally spent when you walk off. If you don't, it means you held back and played it safe. Can you let the monster loose and still control it with not a single error? That is an awfully fine line to walk. It's a megalithic dichotomy. And in the age of digital recording, it is the expectation of an audience that is accustomed to hearing the best of the best.”

“In my lifetime, the America I was born into has devolved from the greatest engine of prosperity and social mobility the world has ever known to the grossest, most disgusting trough of greed and avarice conceivable. The fuel that powers both our political and economic systems at the leadership level - they are indivisible, of course - is corruption - the overt and covert distribution of obscene amounts of money to effect policy. That being the practical reality, any effort to accomplish something which actually benefits society must be crafted from the materials at hand employing the processes already in place - to my knowledge, there is no "progressive" congress located in some alternative capitol. It is hardly surprising, then - if heartbreaking - to see the cake called health care reform be baked from ingredients that would gag a maggot, or that the chefs would proclaim a reeking, deformed product a stunning accomplishment. One can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear, after all - and there isn't a scrap of silk to be found in our nation's capitol, sad to say. I carry the memory of the America I knew as a boy dear to my heart, but I can't pretend it hasn't faded away...”

“I really think the America you grew up in was different because it hadn't thoroughly been taken over by corporations. When President Eisenhower warned to beware of the military-industrial complex in 1961, he was telling us in effect: Beware the power of the corporations.
The unethical, immoral, self-serving nature of the corporation which by definition has a continuous existence is the bane of American society from our government to our media to the food we eat.
When you were growing up, corporations were still in the process of taking over; now, they pretty much have America wrapped around their fingers. As they drive us into a third world quality of life, they'll look elsewhere for what they need which is to satiate their insatiable need for money and power.
The only thing I've come up with in discussion with others is to repeal the corporations' right to personhood granted during the hectic days of post-Civil War 19th century; the corporations got an infectious toe-hold in the constituional process of granting slaves freedom; they snuck in "personhood" (a legal term) for corporations and its been downhill since then.
That's why Europe doesn't have the corporate problem we have; because in America, corporations took advantage of post-Civil War America to gurantee their "personhood' and our enslavement.”

You have chosen to side with known kidnappers who flouted well-established international law. As for time elapsed, etc. - the elapsed would NEVER have grown so long had the kidnappers not stretched out the pleadings far past the bounds of decency - the Brazilian courts REPEATEDLY found for the natural father - the law is crystal clear - and the abductors abused the system - and the child - to the very last possible second.
