Obama: 'I Will Not Stand For' Misconduct At Veterans Affairs Hospitals

Obama: 'I Will Not Stand For' Misconduct At Veterans Affairs Hospitals

Commented May 21, 2014 at 14:41:29 in Politics

“Then-Senator Barack Obama, November 12, 2007: “After seven years of an Administration that has stretched our military to the breaking point, ignored deplorable conditions at some VA hospitals, and neglected the planning and preparation necessary to care for our returning heroes, America’s veterans deserve a President who will fight for them not just when it’s easy or convenient, but every hour of every day for the next four years.”
By 2012, Obama continued to compare the performance of the VA during his administration favorably to his predecessor, declaring, “For the first time ever, we’ve made military families and veterans a top priority not just at DOD, not just at the VA, but across the government.”
Now we know the report of at least 40 U.S. veterans dying waiting for appointments at the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care system is only the tip of the iceberg.”

“When Shinseki took office, he vowed that every disability claim would be processed within 125 days with 98 percent accuracy. But the backlogs only got worse.

It took about four months for VA to process a claim for disability compensation claim when Shinseki was sworn in. By 2012, the average wait time was about nine months.

In February 2013, the Examiner published a five-part series, “Making America’s Heroes Wait,” showing more than 1.1 million veterans with disability claims and appeals were trapped in bureaucratic limbo at VA.

About 70 percent of the 900,000 claims for initial benefits were considered backlogged, meaning they were older than 125 days.

The Examiner series also showed how agency statistics were manipulated to hide mistakes that doomed veterans into appeals that could drag on for years.

There were some early signs then that VA’s failures in delivering medical care were having deadly consequences.

An outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease was reported in Pittsburgh in November 2012. Investigations eventually linked a half-dozen patient deaths from the disease to faulty maintenance and poor management.

Reports of other deaths followed.
Four patients under VA’s care in Atlanta died of a drug overdose or suicides.
In Columbia, S.C., at least six patient deaths from colorectal cancers were linked to delays in receiving colonoscopies at veterans’ medical facilities.
VA eventually acknowledged that delays in providing care was linked to the deaths of 23 patients who died of gastrointestinal cancers at veterans’ health facilities. Deaths from other conditions were not disclosed.”

The reasons or excuses of the shortfalls are irrelevant. When you have to have a balanced budget you cut what you need to. And Indiana did just that. Unlike all the other states. This means Pence lived within his means. What a concept....the government should try this instead of making an excuse or have reasons why you can't.”

“Silly boy.....Until republicans stop taking pensions funds without paying them back, they cannot claim to balance the budget, its called kicking the can down the road. They put everything on a credit card and claim they balanced the budget. Not all of us are like the uninformed base voters of the GOP, we know more about economics.

Indiana depends on Fed money and pension money to function. They balance their budgets by using this money for something it was not allotted.

Nice try.”

Trevorxx on May 16, 2014 at 10:09:50

“Mike Pense cut taxes and then reduced the state contribution to the state employees' already dangerous underfunded retirement plan. That is just like the Republican Virginia governor who borrowed $700M from the state employees' retirement plan; with no revenue identified to pay it back. At the end of the fiscal year, he claimed his management skills ran a budget surplus of $300M. And then he proceeded to spend that surplus, instead of paying it back into the retirement fund. Republicans are great at the borrow and spend game.”

Here is how it works, you give me one dollar and will give you your dolla back plus 9 dollars more to spend in your state.

Anyone with a basic understanding of Macro economics and mulitplier effect, knows that the increase in spending will increase the GDP more than enough, such that the taxes on that increased GDP, will more than pay for the ONE Buck, plus create over 20,000 jobs..

That's what every study done by Blue and Red state government ( by Major accounting firms has shown).

This was always known by Pense...

Its now about saving face.

2 years from nor or 5, you will not be able to run for anything and be indetified as anti obmamacare.

Wait to its well known that the last 2 Ryan budgets that every repub has voted for, ends Medicare immediately... And they keep the Obamacare Medicare savings(they lied and called cuts( just ended overpayments to drug and repub Private Medicare) which will not work w/o obamacare, that they kill.

The Ryan Budget keeps the Obamacare taxes that pay for Obamcare, but not for healthcare , but to help pay for reducing the Mitts and Waltons taxes to ZERO.

Because tax cuts for the rich worked so well under Reagan and BUSH(no jobs created in 8 years, just one million lost and 821K per month being lost when Obama took over.”

In Order for Indiana to cover the Medicaid increases he needed help from the federal government or he would have to cut spending on infrastructure and other in state expenses or increase sales tax and state income tax.
And on the other hand Obama had to help Indiana or it would go against its talking points that the ACA saves money. The American Tax payer is on the hook for more money because of Pence. At no Fault to Pence. He did the right thing.
In fact Mike Pence would make the best president if he decides to run. He operates a balanced budget in Indiana....Good for him....”

The for profit health insurance cartel is still the major player in the mix. You can have profit, or you can have health care for all Americans, but you can't have both. The behavior of the for profit health insurance cartel, using the ACA as an excuse to jack up premiums is proof of that.”

There is a reason no other countries require balanced budgets. It doesn't really help and can cause a lot of problems as the economy shifts around.

"A 2012 International Monetary Fund survey of 81 countries worldwide — including all member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) — found that in 2011, not one had a constitutional balanced budget requirement that would require balance of the entire budget in every year"

“You have no idea about what's in the ACA, do you?

There was NO budget-balancing required for the Medicaid expansion, none at all, because, for the first ten years, it is PAID FOR IN FULL BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. After ten years, the states pay as much as 10%, that's it.

There was NO rational, budgetary or Constitutional reason for these governors to refuse the Medicaid expansion, putting their most vulnerable citizens at risk, except for the TeaPublicans' desperate desire to make Obama look bad.

How many disadvantaged people had to die for them to make their political point?”

Trevorxx on May 15, 2014 at 19:29:01

“All states have to run balanced budgets. In the process of Mike Pence cutting taxes, he decreased the amount of money at which Indiana's underfunded state retirement plan is brought back into compliance. I believe Indiana state retirement plans are around the 60% funded level. The money for tax cuts has to come from somewhere.”

wbcundiff on May 15, 2014 at 18:44:29

“The ACA plan was to cover 90-100% of the cost for medicaid expansion. The issue of whether or not to expand medicaid was at issue before Pence's election and the former governor Mitch Daniels consulted with the governor elect on the issue before he left office. Still, as soon as he took office he proposed tax cuts to the already balanced budget which had been established by the GOP legislature, making it unbalanced. If he wanted to expand medicaid but couldn't do it without 0-10% more help from the fed why lead with a tax cut not favored by your own legislators? Also, we're not Indianans as the article states. We're hoosiers.”

“There is no state medicaid increase for newly signed up under expansion. Federal covers them 100% for the next five years, and at no less than 90% thereafter. That is 100% covered by federal for those earning 138% of the poverty level. Are you suggesting that the state would get to keep the difference of the 'contributions' of those over 100% to help balance their state budget? I don't think that's how it works.”

stopthemadness69 on May 15, 2014 at 15:49:22

“49 states have a law that requires them to balance their budgets, Pence is only doing what the law requires him and 48 other governors to do. This is why a law requiring a federal balanced budget is such a bad idea. When states have a disaster or an emergency the federal government can send them money to deal with the disaster, but if the federal government had to balance its budget, we would tell millions every year, sorry about that tornado or hurricane or flood or mudslide or fire, but try back next year and we'll see if we have anything for you. As designed in the ACA the federal government pays 100% of the Medicaid expansion for 3 years and then never less than 90% after that. This was due to the law that passed in 2010 not due to some new deal Pence struck with Obama. Pence could have done the exact same thing in Jan, but he played partisan politics with peoples lives instead. Ya what a great President that would make. NOT.”

Her employer chose to make more profit. Insurance premiums increased less this year than anytime in the last 50. You imply your income is too high to qualify for subsidies. In reality, you are ineligible for subsidies on the individual market because you have access to your wife's employer based group insurance. It's the law. You seem to be changing your story from moment to moment. You still talk like the taxpayers are losing something by subsidizing insurance. Yet the CBO's repeated analysis has not changed. The ACA saves the taxpayer's money, lowers unemployment, and adds some upward pressure on wages. The taxpayers who will be paying more live in states that chose not to expand Medicaid as Fed money for ERs and free clinics vanishes. Texas alone will need to increase taxes $100 billion over 10 years for NOT expanding Medicaid. And they will still have the nation's largest number of uninsured. Who will learn how horribly they've been screwed by their Republican Governor and want revenge. Two Gallup polls have shown that 10 to 15 million previously uninsured now have insurance. Some got it through the growing job market, some didn't. The biggest whiners about the ACA are always those not affected by it, like you Glen.”

“Boko Haram never was,nor is a threat to the USA,hence they didn't make the TPO list.Neither do they appear on a European terrorist list, for the same reasons .There must thousands of other organisations on this planet which do not pose any menace to the USA or Europe .If you want to prepare for anything that might happen in any remote place on this planet which does not affect you...feel free .But to label your own president as being unprepared is laughable .It's l either about his skin tone or simple overexpose to FOX .
I find it offensive to blame your own president for the kidnapping of these girls .
You ans you buddy Rush Limbaugh are simply abusing a tragic event in another country .Try Benghazi for a change ,that is the usual mantra .”

“Its a Political show. Its all about putting on a show for Politicians.
I will give Obama some credit. Even the conservatives are giving him credit for wanting to designate this group a terrorist organization but Hillary refused to.
Obama is actually on video calling them a terrorist organization. But they never officially designated them a terrorist organization. Without officially labeling this group a terrorist organization they couldn't target this group and give resources to fight them. Another example of our foreign policy being reactive instead of proactive.”

“I know times are changing....I need to get on board.
But I see the bigger picture.
They refused to be Ptro-active and designate this group a terrorist organization and now they have to react by using a hashtag campaign. And it is a great thing and I'm sure it will help. I'm not complaining about the hashtag sign as much as I am about not being proactive. And to not talk about why it didn't happen is aprt of the learning process to keep it from happening again.
But to say there is nothing political or nothing about a PR move in this hashtag sign you are blind. Its all a show with politicians, and the Dems are no different from the GOP in that area....”

“I have worked for a very large corporation and certainly understand how the game of politics is played. One can choose not to play and beat one's head against the wall or use it and gain the advantages. I agree that country could have been more aggressive and accepted help sooner. However, it was an eye opener to read further about the terror that is going on in Nigeria and adjacent countries. Cities are basically isolated by sparsely populated jungle. Religious zealots have been killing each other for quite some time there and alarmingly the innocent in larger numbers. They do not have the military or police mass like we do and the ones they have could be in collusion. I am very happy to live here.”

“Special forces....
Thats my idea....I think it will work better than a hashtag campaign. Also Procatively Designating them a terrorist organization before you have to react.”
