“I've seen him on Bill Maher a number of times, and for the first 4 years of the Bush administration he was very supportive....even into the second term, but as the policies got worse and worse and then after katrina, it seemed Mr Sullivan had had enough. I don't understand gay republicans anyway, but he is a man who said, enough is enough, and I know he was in support of Obama. Good for a man who can change his mind based on the facts, rather than just some mythical ideology. This doesn't mean these people are going to become lifelong democrats, it just means they don't like the direction of the right. I'm sure if and when the repubs get it together, they would look at them again. But I think it is wise for intellectual Americans to say they don't want to be apart of h 8 and division. Good for them. If the dems ever took this turn, I would be out in a hurry too.”

kingofscotts replied on Dec 03, 2009 at 14:02:45

“How ironic that a gay man who supported Obama would use homophobia as a reason to "depart" from the Republican Party.

Obama HIMSELF does not support gay marriage. He has said this MANY MANY times.

He probably does support it in his mind but cannot publicly because of POLITICS.

I'll take a homophobe based on religion than one based on getting themselves re-elected anyday.

Although I would rather not tolerate it from either. At least one has the courage of their convictions no matter how wrong headed they are.

Obama exploited homophobia with his anti-gay marriage position to secure the votes of indep. and blacks among others.

If that's a profile in courage then the pope is a rabbi.”

Frustrated in PA replied on Dec 03, 2009 at 13:59:59

“Very nice comment. It sums up the change in Sullivan. I have followed him for several years and got the impression he was in the party as a fiscal conservative/social liberal. More libertarian. He saw that change and the infection of the religious right. Although he is gay, he never made that the primary issue. Being gay wasn't the only thing that defined him. But now that the hatred has become full-blown, it has become the primary issue.”

“I don't like wars, and I don't like that Obama got stuck with two of them from Boosh, but I don't get the intel that Obama gets, so I'm not going to rush to judgment on this just yet. People doubted Obama all throughout the campaign, and he proved to be right on just about everything. I trust that he put thought into whatever he is doing, and I trust that he is doing what he thinks is best for now. I am a member of MoveOn and most of what we do is good I think, but this is one of those things where we just have to trust the man we voted for. We have to give him some time. I can't believe people expected Obama to go in and clean up 8 years of one mess after the next overnight. He is not a magician, for fox sakes. I don't like to see our brave men and women going over there for their 7th, 8th, 9th, (and so on) tours of duty, I think we ask way too much of them, but I'm going to be patient with Obama. If after 4 years, nothing is better, well then ok...but everyone needs to calm down.”

Yes, because they have no guts and no spine, and Obama is the worst of them!!!”

“I would like to know how it has been possible that time after time for at least the last 30 years, republicans manage to manipulate not only the uneducated, but working class, educated people to vote for them. Reagon's supply-side theory, and trickle down economics, still has them fooled. I don't get it. It is like they are voting their dreams instead of their reality. Right now, 9 out of 10 of these people don't make enough money to support republicans but in their mind, one day they will, so they will vote for them. I think the rule of thumb should be, if you can't afford 2 or more homes, you shouldn't vote for a repub. If you can afford 2 or more homes, and you don't h8 women, black people, g@y people, and other minorities, you shouldn't vote for a repub. Basically what I'm saying is...if you are a rich, white man, go ahead and vote for the repubs, otherwise, vote dem or find a third party to support.”

yemaya replied on Dec 01, 2009 at 14:30:37

“It's because they play on their emotions. Fear, hate, etc... most folks vote based on their so called "gut feeling" rather than a deep understanding of the political issues. If we could change this w/educating folks about the issues that would be great but it's hard when you've got a corporate media who just feeds us bread and circuses. Gotta get out there and do your own research on those issues that are important to you then vote based on which candidates best represents your interests.”

Westof405 replied on Dec 01, 2009 at 13:44:44

“You need to read Thomas Frank's book "What's the Matter with Kansas?" for the answer to your question. The short version is that the GOP uses social issues like abortion and religion to convince conservatives to vote against their own economic interests.

These voters understand abortion and religion; they don't understand economics. They are easily fooled by discredited ideas like "trickle-down economics" and tax cuts that really only benefit the rich. The far right has done a very good job of convincing uneducated voters that liberals are godless Commununists who hate America. They have people like Glenn Beck, Rush and the rest of Faux News to keep this fabrication in front of them. It is The Big Lie.

Another good book is "The Republican Noise Machine" by David Brock, who helped the far right develop their media presence. Brock does a good job of explaining how the right took over talk radio and uses that power to keep its voters in line.”

I'm sure that from the NYC investment firm he was working at in 1961, he looked across the ocean and saw this little mixed baby and, "I've got to make sure he becomes president!" So, he smuggled baby and mother into the United States, covered up all evidence that she ever traveled to Kenya, and fake all the birth records and announcements in Hawaii.”
