Sealed With A Kiss: Dems Unite To Beat GOP Filibuster

“Gov't. Option, weakened though it is, is still in the bill . . . for now. If it had been taken out, Reid probably would have gotten Olympia Snowe's vote.

Landrieu got a big project for Louisianna.”

jerry25 replied on Nov 22, 2009 at 05:50:55

“The Govt. Option wasn't yet taken out in writing.

However, it was PROMISED that it would be taken out.
Landrieu and Lincoln WON in the end. That was the only way for Reid to get the bill into the discussion phase. It would still need 60 votes to get out of discussion, although individual amendments only need 51 votes along the way.
So Landrieu gets to keep her 300 million and gets the G.O. killed at the same time!

“Yes, I read about Eisenstadt's hoax, and I agree that Palin has more than enough fact gaps to call her out for, so that we don't need to perpetuate myths. However this is a strange one. I distinctly remember Palin trying to defend herself against this charge during the campaign. She said, "Of course I know that Africa is a continent." But she never tried to deny that she had made the comment. This seemed a little strange.”

Democratic Party Out of Bounds

Commented Nov 10, 2009 at 00:37:41 in Politics

“I think your response is one of the more rational ones posted. I don't see how threats of never voting the Democratic ticket again and so forth in that ilk will help.

I agree. This is not the health care reform we were excited about. I'm not sure we yet understand the full implications of the Stupak Amendment. I'm not sure what Nancy Pelosi, given her number of Blue Dog Democrats, could have done. Well, she could have refused to let the amendment come to the floor and lost the entire bill. Maybe that would have been better, but I'm not so sure. We did acheive close to universal coverage. This does nothing for me. I'm satisfied with what I have, but it does help an awful lot of families that are now denied coverage or can't afford it. That's not nothing.

I think what we have to do is fight like hell to get Progressives in the Democratic Party. Rahm Emmanuel's victor appears to be pyrric. Obama's hands-off appears to be a huge mistake. Will he change? or will he save his political capital for things like bringing the Olympics to Chicago? Well, that didn't work either, did it!”

Oldwave replied on Nov 10, 2009 at 03:03:34

“You don't see how not voting Democratic Party again will help?
How bout this...perhaps we NEED another decade or so of Republican rule (though I'm beginning to wonder if there is much to choose from between them) to really drive this country to desperate straights, desperate enough that we get the change we actually need?
This bill is a travesty, it certainly isn't "reform". A mandate to purchase health care insurance from the very companies that are the cause of the problem? Yeah, that works great.”

Qunamngdogs replied on Nov 10, 2009 at 01:59:30

“The families who couldn't afford it still can't. There is no cap on premiums- only no rejections. It is worse than nothing in that it takes more money away when they had none.

“Makes one wonder about the value of a "big tent" party when most of its principles have to be bargained away to get something that may not be worth a whole lot.

On the other hand, I wouldn't want to see a party purge in the Democratic Party such as is going on in the Republican Party.”

Palito replied on Nov 07, 2009 at 03:07:08

The problem is that the us goverment only serves corporate interests. Behind closed doors, the reform was negotiated and watered down to be exactly the bill the corporate interests wanted.. And as distraction, we get a side circus of radical politics playing 24 hours on cable. Ignorance, racism and xenophobia are equivalent to patriotism and love for america.”

Well, to paraphrase Arriana slightly, his guiding principle seems to be "Change Olympia Snow can believe in."

“Yes, I saw some of Chris Matthews' show. Only some. I switched channels to prevent myself from throwing something at the screen. Matthews loves to pose as a political sophisticate. Liberals and progressiveness just don't understand the realities of conservative districts in Matthews' latest pose. He had a defeated senator on his program to show that if the Democratic Party hadn't forced her to take votes against her district, she wouldn't have lost. She tried to say that sometimes it's important to take a stand for good public policy, even if it costs you votes in your own district. Matthews wouldn't let her make her point. He rudely interrupted her and answered his own questions. I can't figure out why he even has guests. He wants to do all the talking. Oh, yes, and then slobber some overblown flattery at the end. BARF.”

The liberals will keep their jobs, but good luck winning in a conservative district without a strong liberal base.

That is how Blue Dogs win, they have a strong liberal base and peel away some votes from the GOP....as hard as it is to win without peeling away as many of those conservative votes.....the Blue Dogs are dead in the water without the silent liberal minorities in their districts working for them.”

“I wouldn't play the gay card too quickly on Anderson Cooper's ratings. I don't watch him because I don't think he's a good journalist. I admit that I've always held it against him the CNN replaced him for Aaron Brown, who evidently didn't have a large following. However Aaron was a serious journalist. Anderson is a show piece. And an affected one at that.

I don't understand your reasoning at all about gayness, teabagging, etc. You seem to be making illogical leaps. Nor do I think, as another blogger claims, that Anderson's mother, has used her money and influence to get him jobs. I just think CNN promoted him much too soon. That happens, without a person being straight, gay, or having a famous parent.”

Monn replied on Oct 27, 2009 at 20:17:52

“He is still being blamed entirely by the right for introducing the term tea bagging, and it is common for his sexuality to also be explicitly pointed out by the writer doing the blaming and for commenters to make a lot of comments about his sexuality and hoping his show goes off air.

It is not "playing the gay card" when the role of sexuality is blatantly obvious. The only right wing article I have seen that didn't blame him for being the source of "tea bagging" was one months ago that claimed "tea bagging" had been hatched as a gay/lesbian conspiracy between Cooper, Maddow and blogger Andrew Sullivan.

The tea bagging label, as you may have noticed is REALLY resented by the right wing and a lot of them hate him now and have been salivating over any evidence of his downfall directly because of their associating him with tea bagging thing. I have noticed a lasting ratings drop since he made the tea bagging joke and was blamed for the phenomenon because he a gay man. People like you were never watching so you are not relevant, but there were moderate republicans who were watching and stopped and have tried to get others to stop.”

Monn replied on Oct 27, 2009 at 20:16:02

“We are talking about ratings falls over recent months (i.e ratings Cooper used to have that he does not now). You have never liked his show and were not a viewer who has left in recent months. The complaints you have (promoted too much too soon, not a serious enough journalist, not Aaron Brown) are not complaints someone who was a 360 viewer would suddenly have in recent months.

I may have expressed myself too quickly and briefly, but I was describing what actually has happened to him in regard to the right wing. He made a quick, relatively subtle joke one night "it's hard to talk when you're tea bagging" in reply to Gergen saying the republicans weren't offering policy alternatives. Tea bagging jokes about protesters had been made extensively already for weeks on various websites and by multiple MSNBC TV personalities, but the right wing blogs and press have continually wrongly credited Cooper with coining the term "tea bagging" for protesters, bringing it to TV and popularizing it. He was immediately attacked when he used the term by right wing blogs saying explicitly it was a gay term he knows because he's gay, and they provided pics of him on the cover of the gay magazine the Advocate in their posts to drive things home. There were a lot of republicans at that time who not only declared they would never watch his show again, but also tried to get him fired.”
