Parenting Crisis: The Santa Claus Lie
Commented Dec 24, 2009 at 18:25:32 in Living
“I don't think it was fear mongering. I say in a later post that when my children realized it in their own mind, if they asked I said this with a "wink and a smile". Obviously you are not a believer in God which takes faith. I think you're taking this way to seriously. Kids have had this magic in their lives for many years and then they know who their Santa is without any trauma.
I've never known any child traumatized by finding out there's no Santa. Perhaps those parents made too big a deal about it.
All I know is they're in their 30's and well adjusted, have great jobs and beautiful families - it must have worked!”

“I agree with you. I am in my late 50's and I don't think some of the parents of young children have the perspective of years of living. Those magical years are so short and kids are smart, when they start asking with a wink and a smile tell you still believe. They'll get the picture.”

“Their parents need to make the effort with the children's help to supply toys to the needy. Isn't this what the spirit of Christmas is about. They don't know what the poor children get at home.”
Parenting Crisis: The Santa Claus Lie

“The spirit of Santa Claus is real. I have never told my sons, now 34 and 37 that Santa doesn't exist. Yes, they are getting on in years and have children of their own, but we will always be their "Santa". At one point as they asked questions I would say, "If you don't believe then he might not come." As they grew up I still sign their gifts from Santa and I still tell they must believe or there may be nothing under the tree. They were smart little guys. They knew who Santa was but we all pretended for my sake. I really do believe everyone should have a Santa no matter how old they are.”

“"If you don't believe then he might not come" is a clever way of phrasing it. If you don't believe, then you accept that he didn't come -- but you still know that the presents were there last year, so it's not really a threat that he won't come this year.”

“It would seem that one of the most difficult times for Christian parents must be that time when they acknowledge that their child’s ability to reason reaches a point that one can no longer expect that they’d believe in an old bearded man living way up North who watches everything they do and decides to reward or punish them on Christmas day based on his judgment of whether they’d been naughty and nice. They then must whisk them off to church where they are told that there is a bearded old man who lives way up in the sky and sees everything they do and decides to reward or punish them on the day they die based on his judgment of whether they’d been naughty or nice. Then the parents have to insist that the second scenario is true, while the first is obviously too fanciful for anyone past the age of 10 to believe. Interesting that the churches use the same fear-mongering ruse as Artist50 to induce compliance…If you don’t believe you might not get your imaginary reward!”
My Letter to Joe Lieberman

“I understand your despair Judy, since I am in a similar place. Luckily I live in a state that provides insurance for those who can't get it. However, I will be off Cobra in 2 months and my premiums will go from $600 a month to $1300 a month, but at least I will be covered. I can cover those premiums as long as I can keep working, but because of medical reasons I'm not sure I can. Then what do I do? Well I guess I can always hope I don't live that long becasue I'm still 6 yrs away from Medicare. Thanks, Joe!”
Vaccination: A Conversation Worth Having
Commented Nov 22, 2009 at 17:11:10 in Living
“Sounds logical, unless you're one of the people that has other problems. I'm older than Bill and have some health problems. Let's hope that never happens to him. However, I got the flu before I could get a vaccination and ended up with pneumonia and then a severe and rare lung infection. I would have jumped at taking the vaccine but couldn't and still can't get it.”
Should Teachers Be Selling Lesson Plans?
Commented Nov 19, 2009 at 16:50:05 in Politics
“We buy books, don't we? As a former teacher, I used to use every resource available. Do you really think someone would take the time to put the plans on the internet if they weren't paid? They are a good resource. Why should teachers be excluded from capitalism?”

“Oh, it was definitely posed. When Mitt Romney was running for governor in Massachusetts, many of his campaign commercials had him running or jogging in athletic gear or coming out of the water. I guess they were designed to show his active, fresh take on politics.
I highly doubt that those photos would be used if Newsweek were doing a cover story on him.”

The New Scarlet Letter -- A is for Abortion
Commented Nov 11, 2009 at 15:26:35 in Politics
“I was trying to say that I'm pro-choice but anti-abortion. I think a lot of people feel the same way. I believe abortion is wrong but I don't want the government telling women what to do. The choice should still be up to the individual woman.
I think as a man you have a right to voice your opinion and I understand how difficult it must be when a father doesn't want the mother to abort. However, ultimately it is the woman's body and I don't think any man has the right to tell here what she can do with it.”

“This is an absurd idea, that "it is the woman's body and I don't think any man has the right to tell her what she can do with it."
If a woman is pregnant with my child, why don't I have as much say in the decision as she does? That baby/fetus /blob-of-c ells is as much mine as hers, isn't it?
If a woman doesn't want a man telling her what to do with her body, she shouldn't consent to sex with that man. Even the best birth-control is not 100%. Adults understand that.
I think that once you consent to sex with someone, you are in effect consenting to the possibility of getting pregnant. If you don't want the responsibility, don't do the deed! THAT's what I teach my daughter. It's simple, people!”

“Pro-Choice does not mean pro-abortion. I am a democrat and I don't want the government telling women what they can and can't do with their bodies: however, I think there should only be abortions in cases of incest, rape and life of the mother. I think many people don't understand that distinction. I think there should be a stigma to having an abortion for birth control. Have you seen a 3-D untrasound? Have you experienced a child in your womb moving? I know in my heart this is wrong. What we need is education to stop the number of abortions - not government. I think this issue will sink health care and IMO there are far more people that feel the way I do than you.”

“I have a little trouble with the whole "rape, incest, life of the mother" thing. I haven't seen much by way of people looking to make those instances illegal. The concept always seems to get dragged into the discussion only by people arguing for abortion. What I do understand is, that as a man many women don't think I should even think about the issue. The flawed logic there involves other issues as well. Can I tell women to shut up when the topic of the draft comes up, after all women cannot be drafted? The reality is that the two sides will not ever come together on the issue.”

The army did pay for his medical training and a further MA, but he had other options for proceding with his education. Joining the army wasn't the easiest or least demanding.”

Girlfriends' Guide: Roman Polanski Belongs In Jail!
Commented Oct 03, 2009 at 18:39:18 in Living
“I am very uncomfortable with he said / she said rape charges. My nephew was accused by a young woman and he was facing 12 yrs in jail. His mother had to come up with over $20K for a defense attorney. It was a nightmare. He knew he was innocent and talked to the police without a lawyer (without his mother's knowledge). For some reason she recanted 6 months later and admitted she lied. She never faced any charges and that will always linger over his name. However, when the man admits he is guilty like Polansky I don't know why people are doubting him.”

“I agree. God forbid I am ever on a jury where it is nothing but he said/she said and there is no evidence one way or the other. I would have to find in favor of the defendant. Even if I believed the accuser, justice is about only convicting when guilt is beyond a reasonable doubt. In a purely he said/she said situation, I could never convict.
But he admitted to giving her alcohol, drugs, having sex with, and sodomizing her. And she was 13. There is no if and or buts in this situation.”

Racism, John McCain and Other Republicans
Commented Sep 19, 2009 at 01:45:26 in Politics
“It surprises me that Republicans would want a national ID, that seems to be against the government being involved in their lives. It doesn't add up to me. As for illegal allens, yes they do go to ER's just like other people without insurance and that hospital will try to get that visit paid for, then they will try to get some money from the state and then they will write it off. Those of us with insurance pay for those visits with higher costs. I worked in a hospital ER, rarely do adults come in because they can't afford it, they'll only come in for pregnancy or for their children.”
The Sad, Shocking Truth About How Women Are Feeling

“I almost hate to admit this, but the favorite time of my life was when my children were young and I was a housewife. I loved being a housewife and mother. Since then, I've had other periods in my life that I have also enjoyed. I guess the trick is to enjoy being in the stage where you are. I'm now a housemother for 80 college girls, I certainly never thought I'd end up here, but here I am and I love it!”

“You have some problems Malkin. Most men like to take care of their woman and she in turn takes care of him in different ways. I think the world is still pretty traditional, he mows, she cooks: he does the trash, she puts the kids to bed. Don't everyone yell at me, I know lots of householda have worked out these chores differently and that's the key to happiness, that everyone feels like they are doing their fair share.
The other key is to not want too much, it's just "stuff". I've spent the last 3 yrs giving away all the things my mother, my and that I have collected over a lifetime. I feel free. I have a 1 BR apt now with my favorite things and it is liberating. You will be so much happier let the "stuff" go - trust me. You may need a professional for help”
