“They have a right to a trial in a military trial. These are not US citizens that murdered someone on US soil. This is clearly a terrorist attack and should not be in a federal court of law. This man is entitled to NOTHING ... you confuse his rights to those of US citizens.

You clearly did not lose any family on 9/11 ... you are just another sympathizer of Muslim terrorists.”

“That is simply not true. I have a family member that has been diagnosed with kidney failure and have been doing research. What I found was disturbing. They won't do a transplant on someone who can't pay for the meds needed after the surgery. They cost $1500 - 2000 a month. Nearly 75% of the patients can't afford this. Who gets a transplant? The wealthy. There is some help for low and mid-income patients but many of these people die.”

Recession Intensifies GenX Discontent At Work: Generation X Vs. Baby Boomers, GenY

Commented Nov 16, 2009 at 13:22:55 in Business

“Maybe we tend to blame the generation before us, but I am a Boomer and I think the guilt lies with the Greatest Generation. They came home from the war and raised us in the greatest economic boom that we've ever seen. They worked for corporations that supplied them with great health insurance and retirements. Then, through Reagan, they started us on the road to deficit spending. As a boomer I have never had the financial security my parents and their friends did. Try to compete in the job market at our age and yet we don't have enough money to retire. The way this blog is sounding, they may not pay into SS to finance our retirement. Yikes!!”

SaltySaltillo replied on Nov 16, 2009 at 15:40:34

“You've got your facts a bit wrong. To be clear, the road to deficit spending started with Nixon, who took the Dollar off the gold standard because he needed a way to continue to finance the Vietnam war.
Second, it wasn't the Greatest Generation that put Reagan into office, re-elected him in 1984, put Bush in office in 1988, put Clinton the Triangulator into office in 1992 and 96 or put Bush into office in 2000 and 2004. My grandparents were the Greatest Generation, born in the early 20s, were teenagers and young adults in the 1930s, served in WWII... And they were mostly Democrats for their entire lives...

But, there was a documented shift in voting behavior of the Baby Boomers between 1976 and 1980, which accelerated in 1984 and 1988. Besides, it isn't just that the majority of Baby Boomers voted for Reagan in 80 and 84... it is that as a group they were so large compared to all other demographic groups that whoever they supported was going to win because as a voting block, Boomers ALWAYS trumped the Greatest Generation.

Believe it or not, it was people who were born after WWII that brought about the Reagan Revolution. You can't blame this on the Greatest Generation.”

bluevase replied on Nov 16, 2009 at 15:21:56

“The world was different after WWII. Europe was in shambles -- and USA had virtually no competition. The economy expanded. Now, the world situation is quite different. Not all "boomers" voted for Reagan.”

dakotawoman replied on Nov 16, 2009 at 14:17:16

“Sooo true. I'm a Boomer and NEVER had the opportunities my folks did to advance far, fast.

My folks started out in 1953 with nothing but a 1947 Buick, a coffe pot and a trunk full of frozen meat from Mom's farm parents as a wedding present. Wages were high, product prices low, jobs in his field were plentiful, and competition for them low. Dad went on to build his own power line construction business from the ground up (pardon the pun) and my mom stayed home to raise us three girls. They paid for our college educations -- first in the families on either side -- with cash.

Since their mid-40s they lived a life-style neither my husband nor I have EVER been able to match, even with college degrees. Granted we're both in restricted opportunity service industries -- health care and education -- but competition for jobs, wage stagnation, and staggering inflation, along with the rise of the "global village" economy, keeps eroding our progress up.

We Boomers had to compete with each other for every single thing from prom dates to college scholarships to jobs. I won't even tell you the ridiculous starting salary I was offered for my first post-college job -- which took 200-plus applications for just 8 interviews.

We understand competition. We're still at it. Many of my cohort have done exceedingly well, but just as many of us still live one paycheck away from dumpster diving.

All generations are hurting.”

skymuffin replied on Nov 16, 2009 at 13:46:27

“Well, they also went to college on the G.I. Bill and had government help in buying homes. There was also more union membership, which negotiated good pay and benefits, and which, in turn, most likely forced non-union companies to improve their compensation in order to attract good workers.”
