Christian Leaders Scapegoat Gays on Marriage

Commented Nov 25, 2009 at 15:20:53 in Politics

“First, there were certainly "real atheists" prior to and during slavery in America. Since there were also Jewish people, native Americans and any number of religious minorities not everyone was "basically a Christian". Either people are Christians or they aren't. You can't basically be Christian just because you don't claim some other religious affiliation.

Second, many southern Christians used the bible to justify slavery so no, bringing up Christians in relation to slavery isn't all that difficult. Many southern Christians used portions of the Old Testament to justify that they had the right to keep slaves.”

“Buying fresh fruits and vegetables can be cost effective, it's just a matter of where you shop. If you're buying your produce at Whole Foods, yeah, that's expensive, but if you look for local produce markets you will find that fruits and veggies aren't as expensive as you think. I know, I live in Nowhere, PA and I have local produce. Look harder, shop smarter.”

The protesters are not "actually Democrats" They are actually anti-Amercian far right zealots and ignorant Right leaning lemmings. The comment that they are "Democrats" is meant to confuse the issue and disfuse the understandable anger that any American should feel when our political process is subverted. The Great Oxycotinist says that Hilter was a "Leftie". Utter nonsense.

People showing up at town hall meetings with guns are not using theeir second amendment rights-they are domestic terrorists. Try arguing your political views with someone with a loaded weapon on their hip- You will temper your views if you dare to speak at all.”

“I think that politicians having affairs...people in general having extra-marital affairs are none of my business. What is the business of South Carolinians though, is that their governor left the state for five days without anyone knowing where he was or how to reach them. Now certainly....nothing happened, this time, but that's the real situation here. What he was doing in Argentina is absolutely irrelevant. I mean, let's just say he was writing in Argentina. Fine, he was still gone for five days without telling anyone. If a governor wants to go on vacation that's fine, people can do that, but you don't just go on vacation without telling anyone. This is the issue. The affair is a red herring. It's nothing like the Clinton scandal. Bill didn't leave town mysteriously for several days to go have an affair with Monica Lewinsky. He was a multi-tasker. Whatever Sanford was doing, if my governor ran off somewhere for 5 days without telling anyone where, you can bet your ass I wouldn't be voting him in for another term and I think I probably would like his resignation. I don't think that just letting it go with a pat on the head makes us the bigger person. It makes us idiots. Let's just be clear about what the real problem was.”

“It makes me so furiously angry when white supremacists use Norse Paganism as some sort of justification for their hatred. It makes all pagans, but most especially Norse Pagans seem like anti-semites and racists. Hating other peoples and other cultures is not a part of Norse Paganism as it isn't a part of any road of Paganism. I don't believe that my gods are any more special than any other person's god(s). I can't even make a coherent point about it because I'm just so disgusted and so angry.”

“Really? I'm tired of people assuming that the only people who are religious are Christians. I'm an Asatruar...that's a Norse Pagan. You'll notice that I didn't mention my personal belief, all I said was that Christianity had pushed its way into government in a way that was uncomfortable to me. I also said all religious people aren't Christian fundamentalists, because that's how this argument gets framed and the reality is that all religious people aren't Christians, but it seems so often that when this comes up people forget every other religions. And I get that, I do. Christians are everywhere and their institutional propaganda inundates us all on a daily basis. But when Atheists at large talk about how religious people always harsh their mellow they seem to equate religious with Christian. Not all religious people are Christians, or even monotheists.

Also, I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but it's commonly accepted that typing in caps is the equivalent of yelling, so if you want to have a civil discussion and not just a bitch-fest where you make assumptions about people without asking questions, maybe you should keep that caps where they belong, ie. on the first word of a sentence or on proper nouns. Also, one question mark or one exclamation point per sentence will suffice.”

Evan Neumann replied on Mar 10, 2009 at 13:52:48

“Pagan Norse? That religion was quashed by Christianity centuries ago. It had to be reconstructed in the last 100 years based on Norse texts, with most of your rituals being just made up by the new (re)founders. You of all people have an axe to grind with Christians and other expansionist monotheistic religions.

Pagans worship nature herself, not a separate deity. I don't believe this falls under the intended category of religion. There are other beliefs systems like some Buddhists or Taoists that are benign or even helpful to society.

It is totally reasonable for atheists to be angry and use CAPS when someone tells them they are going to BURN IN HELL FOR ETERNITY. If you do not believe that we will burn in hell for our lack of belief, then this article and hostility is not directed towards you and you are being egotistical and insinuating yourself into an argument that does not involve you.”

“What about the people in the middle? You know, people that have a belief system who think that a person's religion or lack thereof is not a political issue. Do I agree that Christianity has pushed itself into our government in a big way? Yes. That should not be so, but as a logical human being (who has the ability to separate the "reality" of the world I share with both crazy fundamentalists and atheists from my personal beliefs), excuse me if I find it deeply offensive when someone tells me that I might as well believe in unicorns and that I'm somehow suspect or an idiot for believing in something. I spend enough time being damned to hell that I don't really find it all that hilarious when people with whom I would probably otherwise get along fine also feel the need to get in my face about my belief.

All religious people aren't Christian fundamentalists. More power to the atheist community and everything, but using language that embraces all people of belief as idiots isn't getting you any points with anyone.”

And it's less offensive to us that people tell us that we are idiots because we DON'T believe in anything???? Or worse, that we will BURN IN HELL FOR ALL ETERNITY because we don't believe in anything????

I'm not saying that you say things like that, and I'm not normally the one who will say things like you're an idiot for believing, but I'm tired of the Christians coming out here and complaining about religious persecution whenever someone says that maybe they ought to be not so much in the public eye!!!”

“That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Seriously? We're all over John McCain because he picked Sarah Palin as a matter of political expediency "to shake things up" and you think that we would accept the same thing from our own candidate? He'd be eaten alive. Besides which, the number of Clinton supporters who are now voting for John McCain is not going to make the election so I say screw them. If they want to throw a fit because their candidate didn't win that's their problem. This would be pure politics, the very sort that would likely disillusion many of the first time voters Barack Obama has brought into the process. Would they switch to McCain? Probably not. Would they abstain from voting? Entirely possible.

Whatever the case it's just a ridiculous idea. It's too late in the game. They made their pick, we made ours. Deal with it.”

Then she said that even though my Grandfather had been a card carrying-steel-union-Democrat for pretty much his whole life he would probably vote for McCain. I'm not so sure. At first I agreed, but the more I thought about it the more I thought, I'm not so sure. My Grandpa also fought in WWII on the European front. He rarely ever spoke about or even referred to his service. While it was certainly a point of pride for him, it was a personal point of pride. It wasn't something he needed to show off to every person he knew. “Believe it, please. This is the problem. We don't think we have to pay much attention to our government officials because we believe they have our best interest at heart. But really, the citizens of California are as much to blame for electing the governor as the governor is in robbing the 200,00 state workers. We have failed our nation and our children by ignoring these authoritarians as they conduct business. I've heard some people say,"I can't stand politicians so I don't listen" or "I just can't believe a single word that a politician says". If these people thought long and hard, they might soon realize that their difficulty trusting and believing what politicians say is all their fault. What I mean to say can be better explained in this example of a mother who dispenses numerous sugary treats to her young child, who later grows up to become a diabetic who still insists on consuming numerous sugary treats to their own detriment. It would only make sense to conclude that because the mother introduced the treats to the child so early in life, that in spite of continued consumption by the child as an adult, we can clearly suggest that it was the child's mother who is the initiator of this destructive cycle. So, in our case regarding Arnold and other politicians, we have to accept the blame for letting them indulge in the sweetest treats life has to offer for a very, very, long time.”

Michele Obama has risen above not only racism but sexism to become a great mom, lawyer, and wife. That is threatening to all sorts of folks who had 'better' advantages and achieved less. We can 'accept' Laura Bush because, for all her connections, she achieved nothing on her own. And Cindy McCain, she validates the reality most women breath - what do I look like? Does my husband still love me? Etc. But Michele has real power and real beauty and that is threatening because achieving that takes hard, disciplined work. Who would you want your daughter to emulate, Cindy or Michele?”

These are the post-Boomer generations who rightly love the Boomer-mocking, and edgily "edgy"-mocking Sarah Silverman. It's so great for America that Michelle and Barak are literally Gen-Xers, not the slacker variety, but the variety which gave us the hard-working, practical, down-to-earth, in love with irony creators of things that work in America: like Yahoo and Google, for starters. Michelle and Barak have that same irreverent focus on what's stupid (the war In Iraq, for starters) vs. what works. Of COURSE, Michelle's great.
