“And while he's at it, the President can grant himself the dictatorial powers necessary to get single-payer passed without Congress. I would prefer to have the private sector out of the health care business, but pressing for something that can't happen given the current legislative reality isn't much better than being that old man yelling at the clouds.”

“You are entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts. I don't know of ANY union employees that have ever simply made minimum wage. I have seen plenty of research that shows that increases in the minimum wage is nowhere near as detrimental as its detractors might otherwise imply. Many of the jobs that would pay minimum wage are precisely the type of jobs that people with low skill would flock too. It sounds like you believed the tale of the Welfare Queen when it was told a couple of decades ago and never looked back.

So where did you get your degree in African-American Studies again? You say you don't have one...Not too surprised.”

blico replied on Sep 20, 2009 at 13:38:17

“Many union contracts have provisions that when the min. goes up, so does their rate go up. Essentally to maintain a differential in wages. Of course the unions support a min increase, but not because they are benevolent to their fellow struggling workers.”

flossophy replied on Sep 20, 2009 at 12:51:59

“An increasing minimum wage increases union wages.

Look at when the Minimum Wage Act was signed (1938)... There were many black workers in poverty. By enacting the minimum wage, it essentially prevented those blacks from being able to find employment... starting a poverty cycle that continues to this day.

You don't need a degree in AA studies to know this stuff. It's readily available information.”

“If you would like to believe that we currently live in a society that would "do the right thing" absent of any laws requiring it, then so be it. However, given that people (holding everything else constant) don't get called back for jobs depending on how non-White, but especially how Black his or her name sounds, affirmative action is absolutely necessary. (see the University of Chicago study on that subject)

Also, as it stands now, the biggest recipients of Affirmative Action are White women.”

“And you know that the results would be worse how? And how can you be so sure that the public option will work as intended? You must have one helluva crystal ball because there are all sort of laws with unintended consequences. Let me be clear, I'd prefer to have a public option in whatever passes, but to end up in the same place we were when Clinton tried it because people want an "all or nothing approach???" Seems pretty stuck on stupid to me.”

“I can't believe the people who have commented thus far on this post. You all are entitled to your opinions, but to say that no reform is better than some reform is insanity to me. I guess I'm just a different kind of liberal. Many of the other reforms that have been mentioned in these bills are really important as well and while they may not fix all of the problems with our health care system, they're something to work from. The special irony in this case is that I wonder where we Blacks would be if we demanded all of our civil rights at once instead of the way they historically came. In my opinion, many of you need to stop acting like spoiled children. Although I hate sports analogies, I'd rather we claw our way to reform by a series of first downs rather than going for a "hail mary."

Please remember that real people's lives are at stake here and while it would be better if there was a public option in this reform, it is certainly not the only important measure in the bills that have come out of the respective committees. Those who ignore the past are doomed to repeat it!”

Tyler-Durden replied on Sep 09, 2009 at 16:42:20

“no man.

as you should have learned with the "mortgage reform" people are still losing their homes while banks are letting the houses foreclose because they make more profit doing it the long way.

as you should have learned with the "credit card reform" people are now being gouged high rate increases with no justification and people are defaulting by the zillions, while banks are making record profits from FEES.

so no more halfassed reform for me, thanx. i want the real deal.”

Marlyn replied on Sep 09, 2009 at 16:34:01

“Do you understand that not all reform is good reform.

In particular is the issue of universal coverage. Yes, it would be nice if everyone were covered, but NOT if it involves an INDIVIDUAL MANDATE that would force everyone to buy insurance. And this is exactly what is being proposed in HR 3200 and others.

So without the PUBLIC OPTION providing a way out of that system, the result would be WORSE than what we have now.

Massachusetts currently has such a system. We DON'T want that!”

Awake-and-Sing replied on Sep 09, 2009 at 16:32:20

“Horsefeathers.

The public option is the centerpiece of reform. It is the best manner to controlling costs.

All bills have a mandate for people currently uninsured to buy individual insurance with a tax penalty of thousands of dollars if they don't.

Without a public option, people, including those people who cannot currently afford health insurance, will all by legally required to buy overpriced, unreliable private health insurance at extortion level rates, under a penalty of thousands of dollars if we don't.

The immorality of that outweighs everything else in the bill.”

clearthinker2008 replied on Sep 09, 2009 at 16:32:01

“For the most part, all I ever see on this site when it comes to health care (and many other topics) is an "all or nothing" approach to the problem. I consider myself to be a pretty fairly liberal independent, but not everyone who voted for Obama is liberal. Many of you seem completely ignorant of the political process if you think that Obama dictating precisely what he want the bill to be would get it anything other than completely shut down. I guess some of you figure no progress is better than a little progress if you can't get exactly what you want. I just have one question for you all...Have you always been accustomed to getting your way???”

“The repubs and those on the bribe list of the insurance industry want to maintain the status quo. With regard to any sort of PO it is now or never. You will never get that with repubs and the dems are not likely to maintain 60 seats in the Senate after 2010 (like that even matters right now) so they need to go for it. Screw the repubs and the blue dogs and take the reconciliation route. Let it pass and then if the repubs ever regain both ends of Penn. Ave they can try to dismantle it. BTW if all these people are so opposed to govt run insurance why don't they advocate dismantling medicare and the VA? Such hypocrites.”

“I normally would agree with you AceOfSpades. And I've pretty much used your arguement on other topics to defend O.bama. But healthcare is different and here is why. Unlike some of the other major policy issues O.bama has been tackling this isn't new. The economic melt down, "new" (in political time), the two wars, "new", but the healthcare problem/melt down/crisis is VERY OLD. Decades and decades old, at what point is the waiting part over and time for action? We have already been patient for decades and waited for this moment, a moment when we have great majorities in congress and democratic president. Now after patiently waiting for this set up, we have it now. And you are telling me we STILL are not going to get healthcare reform? Like understand the frustration here. Like another poster said, whats the point? What's the point of democrats being in "power", if the repubs still always end up getting what they want.”

“So many of you are sooo quick to bash Obama. Why aren't you bashing the people in Congress? Obama could put out his precise position and say, I'm not signing anything that falls short, but guess what? There would be no negotiations at that point and because of the present members of Congress, nothing would happen and you would bash Obama for having been so obstinate.

I really do believe everyone should have health care, but I'm not going to be another "Blame Obama" parrot for everything wrong in the country. He can only do so much and I am proud of many of the things he's been able to accomplish thus far. I guess that's why I'm a registered independent because in my opinion both parties are full of it.”

BUT, as President Obama has said many many times, "The buck stops here."

It is President Obama that is responsible for leading and for the decisions his administration makes...it's him and him alone that signs the bills.

And, so far, the two big "change" issues that were supposed to be for the American people...on forecloser and on credit cards that have been signed were so watered down and for the corporations that they basically are meaningless to the American people.

I'm pretty much convienced now that when a Health Care Reform bill is passed, it will be 85% in favor of the corporations, with maybe a sentence or two for the people. Oh, and that sentence or two won't take affect until the year 2020.

Meanwhile, all of our elected officials will be patting themselves on the back and happily cramming money into their pockets.”
