The End Of A Decade: We Are All Harry Whittington

Commented Dec 31, 2009 at 20:04:26 in Media

“Can people saying we are at the end of the decade stop please and do some basic arithmetic.

We need 365 more days to be the end of the decade!!! Just count.”

BruceHNV replied on Dec 31, 2009 at 21:29:47

“2000 was the first year of the 21st century - hence the beginning of the first decade within it.

If the decade began 1.1.2000, then the end of it is 12.31.2009. Ten years. Count:
2000
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
9.

Ten years.”

“There's always one nerd in the group who points this out and tries to appear smarter than everyone else.

A decade is any 10 year period and can start whenever you want it to.”

“Do we have to, really? It is the end of a decade. Next year will also be the end of a decade. Last year was the end of a decade. In fact, five minutes ago was the end of a decade that began ten years ago to the minute.”

Doughnuts For Dorgan: Drug Reimportation Killed In Deal That Might Get Cheaper Drugs For Seniors

Commented Dec 16, 2009 at 10:48:00 in Politics

“Look, you folks are welcome to support drug 'import' from other Countries so long as you understand teh arguments against it.

This is not a 'protectionist' stance. The fact is that the US spends billions on R&D that develops drugs, only a few of which are brought to the market without side-effects. The actual drug themselves don't necessarily cost that much.

Other countries then place price controls on the drugs, which is why all the R&D come from the US. But, now they want to take those drugs that were developed here, and ship them back to us with the price controls in tact.

The result is that there will be less R&D. If you want that...fine. But, understand the trade-offs.”

iskra replied on Dec 16, 2009 at 11:01:20

“I believe that you are mistaken on this count.

FIrst, a large portion of the R&D that goes on the the US is funded by the government, not the drug companies. This is especially true of drugs that treat diseases like cancer, diabetes and such. A large portion of drug company R&D goes into drugs for things like ED and anti-depressants.

According to the CBO "Most of the important new drugs introduced by the pharmaceutical industry
over the past 40 years were developed with some contribution from public-sector research "

So don't be so quick to believe the R&D claims by Pharma, they spend between 15 and 20% on R&D (like a software company).

The idea that if they reduced prices R&D would disappear is just false.
Check the CBO report here : http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/76xx/doc7615/10-02-DrugR-D.pdf

“Advocate123,

You sound just like a lobbyist or a drug copmpany apologist. But it's good you admitted they add huge amounts to the price in the USA simply because they can. You said it yourself there is no control. Everybody needs some control. The profits these behemoths report are AFTER they spend for R & D and they are obcene my good friend.

To listen to people like you we may as well just not do anything about healtcare prices. Just pay more, more, more, to pad gigantic profits and finance Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Pharmaceutical Executives.

This argument is specious. No one ever said don't make a buck. But these criminals always have to take it to an extreme.”

werba replied on Dec 16, 2009 at 10:54:49

“How charmingly American-insular! In fact the US is NOT the biggest or most important country when it comes to R&D, and most of that is done in Universities - whatever they may tell you, US pharma companies are responsible for only 12% or so of research.”

“Why is he not a conservative? From what I know about Charles Johnson he is conservative in his ideaology. Conservatism has been twisted. Traitional conservatism is based on small government, separation of church and state, promotion of civil liberties and fiscal conservatism. The traditional conservative would be more in line with a Teddy Roosevelt, conserve both natural resources and savings. Spending in any regard whether it is by the government or individual is overconsumption.

it is the labels that unnerve me. I am not a straight liberal, straight conservative and often follow more of a libertarian idealogy, no government in body or bedroom issues and follow a more isolationist approach to foreign policy. Isolationism does not mean we do not engage with our allies but we don't go invading sovereign nations like Iraq. We protect or national interests but the definition of national interest has been skewed. I follow each issue individually and cannot be labeled because my decision-making on each issue does not follow a party line.”

CRIST: "We've had to cut about $7 billion the past two years and we haven't raised taxes and we're still in balance. But to be candid, it's getting harder every day. It's getting harder every day and we know that it's important that we pass this stimulus package. It is important that we do so to help education, to help our infrastructure, and to help health care for those who need it the most — the most vulnerable among us. And let me finish by saying, Mr. President, we need to do it in a bipartisan way. This issue of helping our country is about helping our country. This is not about partisan politics. This is about rising above that, helping America and reigniting our economy."”
