“This is what I've been saying. It's the word "marriage" that Americans can get comfortable with--including Blacks.
I'm sure marriage will come, but to get all the benefits that you mention, I implore the gay movement to accept civil unions. And, then marriage will come. If you have to wait for Americans to get on your side, it will be another 10 years.
I'm a heterosexual female with cancer who probably will be dead before DADT passes. I am not comfortable with homosexual marriages, but I do feel that homosexual couples should have the same entitlements as a heterosexual couple. I am one voter. I cannot make a difference, however, I think the gay movement is going about it the wrong way, insisting on marriage. People are not with it and you are not going to change anyone's mind unless they hear the stories like the one Steamboater mentioned in a post here.”

“Excellent post. This is my solution, too--to get what you want for now. At some point, people will accept gay marriage. To get moving, this would be the best way. I think this is strategic. The way it's going now--with American attitudes--you are not going to get it unless Obama can fill the courts to lean to the left. Personally, if this is not going to happen via the legislative and executive branch of the Fed government. It's not going to happen on the state level. The Fed courts is how gays will get their rights. The gay movement should make sure that they keep a sympathetic Dem president in office to get those people on the courts.”

“Agreed. When old people like me die, the gay movement have a chance of advancing all their rights (issues). We are a "set-in-our-way" bunch and we are not going to change our attitudes.
I say that with everything: gay rights, racism and the other ills are this country are not going to be solved until people who are stubbornly set in their way are dead.
And, for those who don't believe me....
Let's see how easy it will be to change your mind when you get to a certain age. Your belief system is your belief system. You can sway a change, but blaming me as a Black for all your social ills is not the way.”

“During slavery, the only thing that we, as Blacks, had was the Church (our religion). We surely did not have White support. That's the only thing we could trust--and you expect us to change that overnight. It has nothing to do with your cause. We have been indoctrinated in our beliefs. Will it change? I think so, providing that gays do not continue to do what they have been doing since Prop 8 passed and that is, blaming Blacks.”

“Agreed. I have been reading the gay marriage issues and I, too, see the blame game. I was semi-supportive of gay rights, but reading all the nasty stuff that gays are saying about the Blacks on Prop 8, I'm starting to repel anything gay. We, as Blacks, through the centuries had nothing to turn to but our churches. So, it is hard to go against what we have been taught for years. The church was our foundation. I agree with Goff, the gay's blaming of Prop 8 on Blacks is not helping their case in the Black community. We do not have the votes to help or harm your cause, but blaming us will not help your cause. Trust me.”

“AND to understand the American masses! They absolutely adore being lied to. They had to be dragged kicking and screaming to listen to the Nixon tapes to admit that he lied to them. They loved Reagan's Madoff con job (and Clinton's follow-up) that all we had to do was "unleash" the Free Market, and everyone would be prosperous--even though the unregulated Free Market was about to globalize the mobs jobs in China, and steal their savings, jobs, and homes in the Ponzi scheme called Wall St. They love Limbaugh and Fox's nonstop lies. So why not Palin's?”

I remember this book from childhood. I think Christians especially could benefit from this book because it is written from a Christian perspective with a chapter devoted entirely (if I remember correctly) to Satan.
One can of course attack the book because of it's Christ-centric perspective towards the psych, but I found the book particularly enlightening despite this bias.”

“I think you may have something. I was recovering from cancer so my co-workers came over and cooked for me. The only thing they required from me was wine. They provided the food. I was surprised at how much wine they consumed while cooking, but it seemed relaxing and the food was excellent.
I still cannot drink wine. Drinking for me nowadays is comparable to giving a baby a glass of wine. It knocks me out. However, I agree with your point. Turn cooking into a labor of love, while sipping the grapes.”

Fighting Myeloma with Laughter

“I have multiple myeloma. I self-diagnosed myself on 12/31/2007. My official diagnosis date is 1/08/2008 (when hematologist/oncologist) confirmed my disease. I have had chemo, a transplant, clinical trial and today I am trying to recover from the ordeal by resuming my exercise program. I just got vaccinated one-year post transplant a week ago.
I retired from my job 05/31/2008, after side effects officially sidelined me. I have a partial remission and, currently, take no cancer medication. The drugs/treatments did havoc on my controlled diabetes--making it uncontrollable. So, today, i am trying to right that wrong.
Myeloma is a tough beast to fight...but I will not give up. For a wonderful support group, please go to:

“I agree. I keep saying if the LGBT would coin their own word for "marriage," this would be a non-issue. Supporters of Prop 8 want to protect the institution of marriage between a man and a woman.
If the gay community, as creative as they are, will come up with their own word, most Americans will accept their unions and will support them having the same entitlements and rights as a heterosexual union. However, most Americans want to distinguish between the two unions when they are discussed in textbooks, literature, and legislation.”

or maybe Type-A marriage; Type-B marriage
Done. Lets move on.
Or is some other insidious issue still lingering?”

“Agreed. Why do we have to legislate sexual acts? Keep what you do in your bedroom. Sure, there are incidents of discrimination against gays, but no more so than any other act that people perceived as abnormal. If we start justifying every type of sexual act or orientation, what's next, bestiality?”

“I got news for you: Marriage isn't actually about sex.
It only seems to be about sex when gay people want to share the rights and responsibilities of marriage -- long-term companionship, caregiving unto old age, children, dealing with each others' families, taking care of aging relatives, sharing a household, sharing a life.
This is what marriage equality means (from the Urban Institute: http://www.urban.org/toolkit/issues/gayresearchfocus.cfm)
"[Gay] couples cannot be recognized as legally married, so a surviving partner loses financial ground. Survivors are denied the Social Security benefits that married couples get, face heavy taxes on any retirement plan, and get charged an estate tax if they inherit a home, even if it was jointly owned.
Same-sex senior couples are more likely to still be making mortgage payments when one dies. Combined with other financial losses, this higher debt burden puts surviving partners at greater risk of losing their home. Even before a partner's death, these seniors risk losing their home when an elderly partner enters a nursing home. Federal Medicaid law permits a married spouse to remain in the couple's home, but not an unmarried partner."
So much of this is taken for granted. It's about support, family, and private, personal responsibility.

However, from my research, it seems that Obama is working on most, if not all, of those things he championed. As an A personality and one who has been around for awhile, I prefer someone who takes their time in making their decisions. Also, Obama is also dealing with unprecedented opposition from the Republican Party who criticize every move he makes. Being retired, I watch the news, read HuffPo, FiveThirtyEight, Daily Kos, U.S. Today and watch C-Span. It seems that Obama is making progress.”
