Can We Please Stop 'Listening to Our Bodies'?

Can We Please Stop 'Listening to Our Bodies'?

Commented Sep 24, 2013 at 06:38:15 in Healthy Living

“If the choice to not eat meat is based on personal ethical choices, that is, of course, fine. If someone becomes a vegan solely because they believe it's healthier, I would hope they do some research and think over their ideas. Choosing to be a vegan is a tradeoff between personal health and the health of some imagined uneaten animals. My main concern is when vegans force their growing children into that tradeoff in which the negative result is magnified because they didn't get an early start with a diet rich in animal products and saturated fats like their parents most likely did.”

“Where does a low fat vegan eater get B-12 and his EFA's? All are essential for life.”

ray christl on Mar 2, 2013 at 00:31:29

“EFA's are easy in nuts like hemp, flax, chia, walnuts & plenty of dark greens like romaine--omega 3 is most important.
The B-12 is tricky. first the need for 12 is in dealing with animal proteins--which are not present in this diet, but the residual soil on greens NOT completely sanitized will provide some 12 occasionally. Eat a little dirt !!!”

“Good article.. it's been a long time since HuffPost has had anything written about nutrition that wasn't the same old eat low fat and wholegrains baloney. As a 51 year old woman who has lost over 120 lbs and kept it off easily for years via a low carb paleo way of eating, I agree completely with what the author has written. I love to be active and exercise, I do it because I feel great and not in an effort to burn calories. I did not lose weight because I was active, I feel like being active because I've lost weight. Bravo HuffPost, keep articles like this coming.”

“Terrific post. I hope to get where you are some day. I started eating Paleo, and the weight started coming off, 48 pounds so far, but I have at least another 80 to go. I started exercising because my outsides did not reflect how great I was feeling on the inside, and I wanted to change that. Ditch all grains people, even the whole grains. Your body will, thank you!”

Three Hidden Ways Wheat Makes You Fat

“I know in your heart of hearts you must realize that what you were taught in school was based on what is good financially for the USDA and not what is good for human health. There is NOTHING contained in wheat or other grains that can't be gotten from any number of far better food choices.
No one needs grain and you know it.”

How To Kick Your Meat Addiction

Commented Aug 5, 2011 at 20:38:21 in Healthy Living

“Ridiculous vegan agenda..meat is not addictive, it's what humans are meant to eat. Seek out and eat more grass fed and locally produced meat along with more natural fats and salad veggies, eat NO grains or processed foods and watch your health bloom. It is total myth that grains, whole or otherwise, are good for you. We don't need them and they make so many of us sick eventually.
The only ones "doing well" on this grain based diet are the USDA, Big Agra and Big Pharma.
Try these search terms: "paleo diet", "primal diet", "grain and autoimmune disease"
SO many diseases that many of us consider a natural part of aging are actually caused by a diet high in whole grains, legumes and refined carbohydrates.”

“I meet people all the time who would like to become Vegan but who have

a diet so dependent upon meat that they have no idea what to eat once it is gone.

"Addictive" is a strong word. I would have said "Dependent" upon meat.

Learning to expand one's source of food beyond Meat and Potatoes is a good

first step towards a healthier lifestyle.”

A 3-Step Plan To Successful Weight Loss

Commented Jul 14, 2011 at 20:20:19 in Healthy Living

“The snack urge is certainly triggered by the carbs in the diet, any carb, whole grain or otherwise... The term I've heard used is "starving at the cellular level" because, as you explained so well, the body can't access your stored fat for energy when you need it so the body sends out the call for the other source of energy..more food. I eat LCHF and never snack anymore, 4-10 hours between meals is effortless because I simply am not hungry.. I am also over 100 pounds lighter! My diet consists of as much meat, eggs and fat as I want and 20 grams per day or less of salad greens, spinach and some carbs from full fat dairy along with occasional nuts and berries. Eat more, lose weight, gain health and energy and never need a snack. So nice to be able to forget about food for most of the day!”

10 Fad Diets To Never Try

“I was always hungry. I could eat 2000 calories of carb heavy foods, didn't matter if they were whole grains, sweet potatoes or candy, I would feel stuffed and yet still want to eat more. You may call it a binge eating disorder but I call it too many carbs. Once I cut way down, under 20 grams, all problems with hunger went away. I can once again trust my hunger and satiety cycles. I eat when hungry, stop when satisfied and never need snacks.. I usually go 4-10 hours between meals and don't even think about food in between. The problem is carbs and only carbs, I am not mentally or emotionally ill, I just can't eat grains and starches. Say what you will but this (LCHF) works and it is healthy. I know they teach all dietitians that carbs are essential and to push the eating of them but they are a huge problem for many, many people and can be blamed for the rising levels of diabetes, obesity and heart disease. I read recently that a dietitian named Hope Warshaw recommends that diabetics eat up to 65% of calories as carbohydrates and then rely on meds to cover the inevitable blood sugar spike after each meal..I found this advice shocking! It is well known that diabetics can reduce their need for meds and control their blood sugars eating low carb. A sweet potato may no kill me but it diminishes my quality of life!”

“I live low carb / high fat and stay in a carb range of 10-20 gms/day, pretty much all the time. At this carb level I have ZERO cravings and stay satiated for 4-10 hours at a time. I have been living this way for about 4 years and have lost over 100 pounds.
After a lifetime of starvation level low fat/ high carb eating and existing for months at a time in a state of nonstop hunger I found the relief from hunger of Atkins LCHF to be amazing. The keys for me are eating plenty of fats, including animal and saturated (both are very good for you) and eating until I am satisfied at each meal. I am healthier than ever, have loads of energy and plan to eat this way for the rest of my life... also, it's very easy to do every day.”

The Paleo Diet: Can We Really Eat Like Our Ancestors Did?

Commented Jul 11, 2011 at 08:19:10 in Healthy Living

“Once I started eating low carb and high fat, I no longer needed to watch my total caloric intake.
I eat until I am full and then live my life and eat again when my body tells me to (4-10 hours later.) Most of my life I ate low fat, high carb and could not trust the natural hunger and satiety cycles because insulin resistance made me feel hungry all the time..and made me FAT! When you feel hungry all the time, and you're fat, you feel you have no choice but to desperately try to count and restrict calories. Multiple health benefits and ease aside, having satiety and hunger that I can trust is the most amazing part of eating like humans are meant to eat. I have easily maintained my 100+ pound weightloss for many years by eating this way.”

“Discipline, will power, starvation, constant hunger, calorie restriction, calorie counting. Forget them all. Once you are eating what truly suits you, you can become a normal person again, one that is no longer obsessed by food and watching the clock, waiting for the next skimpy meal or snack. After a lifetime of every other "diet plan" I now eat low carb, high fat.. I never count calories, eat until I am full, easily go 4-10 hours before I need to eat again and maintain my 100+ pound weightloss effortlessly.. when I feel hungry, I can eat happily.. no guilt, nothing to fight, suppress or trick, no need to exert willpower or discipline. I can trust that I am hungry simply because my cells require nourishment... Once you take all grains and most carbs out of your diet and your body goes back to normal.. it's science that works like magic.”

The Paleo Diet: Can We Really Eat Like Our Ancestors Did?

“That failed dietary experiment started in the late 1960's and early 1970's when the U.S. government decided to issue dietary goals for the population based on the myth that dietary fat caused heart disease (it is heart healthy.) Forty years of having a high carbohydrate diet pushed on us..everything from whole grains to HFCS, is directly responsible for the staggering rates of diabetes, heart disease and obesity and many other health issues including arthritis, Alzheimer's, infertility..the list goes on. The US government and the USDA (whose job it is to promote and sell commodity agriculture products)
should stay out of the business of telling people what to eat. We were all much healthier and slimmer when we ate a diet that suited us which, for the vast majority was meat, animal fats and included some veggies, berries, nuts, etc.”

“If you have to work this hard to get all your nutrients, it is not the right diet for you...

I eat very low carb and high fat...plenty of fatty meats and a small amount of fresh veggies, heavy cream, some cheese and berries on occasion.. I am the healthiest I have ever been and it takes very little effort.. and I am never hungry between meals and do not ever have to worry about calories. Grain is for cattle and pigs but it makes people fat and sick.”
