Leeds Schools In Alabama Not Budging On Corporal Punishment Policy

Leeds Schools In Alabama Not Budging On Corporal Punishment Policy

Commented Oct 14, 2013 at 16:48:07 in Parents

“The kids whose parents signed "yes" to the consent form will be the kids that won't need the punishment because their parents have already demonstrated respect for the school authorities and likewise have passed that attitude on to the kids. The trouble makers will be the kids whose parents checked "no." It's common sense to me.”

“As a former owner of a janitorial service, first let me say that this kind of work is HARD! As far as whether Hyatt should be using union employees or not, I will not comment. I WILL say however, that hiring temps and part timers, while appearing to be economically beneficial in the short term, is really a poor long term strategy for overall growth and productivity in the day to day operations. You can pay a non-union worker a very good salary, with benefits, and provide a safe and decent working environment without going broke. The problem with a lot of these business growth reports is that they are all reported in percentages and these measurements can be manipulated many ways. Just because profits may be up only 1%, that doesn't mean it's only $100. 1% of a billion dollar operation is still a good amount of money to gain in a year. I think corporate executives need to re-think and re-define what constitutes good, steady growth and measure not only in terms of dollars and cents, but in employee turnover, customer satisfaction, etc. A good business executive doesn't just measure dollars...”

“"A good business executive doesn't just measure dollars..."

Absolutely 100% true.

But I'd bet a paycheck the hotel's management's bonus is tied to what they bring to the bottom line and NOT how well the hotel is managed.”

Billy Graham and Amendment 1: A Tarnished Legacy

Billy Graham and Amendment 1: A Tarnished Legacy

Commented May 6, 2012 at 15:38:40 in Gay Voices

“"he had absolutely nothing to gain by weighing in on the battle over North Carolina's Amendment 1. It's a shame that when confronted with the choice between preserving his popular image as a venerable, unifying figure and mounting one last crusade against the LGBT community, Billy Graham chose the latter. It says a lot about the man's true character that he selected for what may be his final public gesture an act of malice, divisiveness, and discrimination."

Billy Graham never preached to "gain" anything. He simply told people what the scriptures say. He doesn't get to have an opinion - he must say what God said. I did not read in this statement anything against homosexuality. His stance is against changing the definition of "marriage". I agree, it does say a lot about his character - that he spoke the truth without regard for his reputation, because after all, even Jesus made himself of no reputation. We are called to walk righteously according to the scripture, whether or not we realize any gain or positive reputation.”

“The woman who found it is legally entitled to it. I don't know why this case is ongoing - it's a simple case of "you threw it away - you waived possession and ownership". This is ridiculous. And how do we know who bought that particular ticket? The woman suing has to prove that she actually purchased THAT ticket. There's no way she can do it.”

“I'm not typically in favor of handcuffing young children. However, she clearly needed to be restrained and I would think cuffs would be the safest for all involved. She said it was uncomfortable. Perhaps this consequence will result in her not behaving this way again. I will say, I have a hard time believing that her parents have set a standard of behavior for her and respect for authority. On the first day of kindergarten, my children were told that if they got into trouble at school, they were in double trouble at home. We called it "2 for 1". Funny thing is, we never had to use it, because we set the standard early and because discipline was a reality in our home, they never doubted it. We had many teachers come to us over the years and ask us what our secret is. We told them - 2 for 1. Too many parents (not all, but a lot) leave it to the teachers and other public servants to raise their children. This is why we have what we have. I wish that little girl luck. I hope she learned from this (and her parents too).”

No Child Left Behind: 10 States Receive Waivers From Education Law's Sweeping Requirements

Commented Feb 9, 2012 at 17:04:40 in Education

“I believe this is a step in the right direction. "No Child Left Behind" was a wonderful concept but was executed poorly. It restricted teachers from teaching a balanced range of concepts and instead they had to teach "the test" in order to get these kids to pass. However, many of them are not passing the test and are lacking in other, untested, areas as well. The lesson here is really this - Parents, you need to become partners with your child's teacher(s). If you want your child to excel in education, you're going to have to get on board - practice spelling, reading and math with your children to reinforce the lessons they are learning in the classroom. It's the only way our kids are going to be prepared for the collegiate level. I'm a parent who speaks from experience. My daughter graduated from Northwestern this past year and NCLB had nothing to do with her accomplishments. It was the accomplishment of the teachers, her parents and herself - working together - to make sure that she was able to achieve a higher standard of learning.”

“We really need to stop tagging bills on to one another. Each piece of legislation needs to pass on its own merits. Not only would this eliminate a lot of the politics discussed in this piece, it would also eliminate a lot of "fluff" because there simply would not be enough time and energy to debate every bill that comes before the senate. We would have to carefully pick and choose only the most important issues that effect everyone, not just a select few with a specific agenda.”

“I have been advocating that all bills should stand alone for years now. No one pays attention. But I still think that would stop a lot of BS from going through Congress unchallenged. For instance, who could be against (on the face of it) of a tax cut? But the Gold Over People party have put a potentially deadly rider on the bill, that compromises the Oogalalah aquifer--the primary source of potable water in Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma, with five other states also drawing from that aquifer also. One small spill could ruin the entire aquifer.”
