Why Ticket Prices Must Change

“Sending a few of these arts majors to business school might be a good start. The article indicates a complete lack of comprehension of how to make and meet a budget.”

Peterell replied on Jan 05, 2010 at 10:51:48

“In response to Amalek:

I have worked in non-profit arts, the public sector, and corporate America. The area that uses its resources the best is the non-profit arts sector by a wide margin, followed distantly by Government, with Corporate America not even in sight. If anyone needs to get additional training, it is the MBA's who have run so many corporations into the ground while they themselves have reaped personal profit. Ask any accountant who deals with non-profits and for-profits and they will tell you that the non-profit managers have far more skills in managing money and meeting their communities needs. If the non-profit sector were subsidized to a tiny fraction in the manner that the for-profit sector was, it would be healthy. While there are some poor non-profit managers out there, the vast majority of them are smart, hard-working and have dedicated themselves to serving the public, rather than lining their own pockets. Let's see what happens when the Government stops subsidizing Con-Agra, Shell Oil, General Electric etc... .

Most civilized countries have determined that a healthy and affordable arts community is good for the well-being of their citizens. America gives about fifty cents per-capita to the arts on a federal level. This is exponentially smaller than every other developed country in the world. What is amazing is not that the arts are in trouble here, but that they survive and continue to sometimes produce great work.”

“So much for the maverick. Face a real challenge from the right and he falls right back in line. If McCain had gone down to defeat in the primary, at least he could hold his head high knowing that history will record him as a man of principle. Now, he will be remembered only as another sleazy politician.”

Copenhagen: China's Chance to Lead; Where is the United States?

Commented Dec 18, 2009 at 06:34:56 in Green

“Destroying the environment has been a theological position for republicans, one they feel even more strongly about than health care. After all, the Bible tells us to care for the sick, but it also tells us to dominate the earth. The later is a lot more fun (and its Old Testament to boot).”

Copenhagen: China's Chance to Lead; Where is the United States?

Commented Dec 18, 2009 at 06:31:50 in Green

“I live in China and I think the Chinese government is looking at the issue quite differently than America. They know they cannot sustain current pollution levels. People are too unhappy with air quality and it will soon lead to political instability.

But they also see huge opportunity. Since most of the green future has not been built yet - electric cars for example, China sees a chance to lead this revolution. The are serious students of history, and see that the green revolution might do for them what the industrial revolution did for America.”

New Tiger Woods Ad Campaign (Part 2)

Commented Dec 10, 2009 at 22:05:53 in Comedy

“Bob Scheiffer last Sunday explained this well. If Tiger did not want us obsessed with his sex life, he simply needed to turn down the billion dollars we gave him and just play golf with his friends. Then the only person who cared about who he laid would be his wife.

But he took our money, and now we get entertained.”

StephenJK replied on Dec 12, 2009 at 03:10:03

“bob scheiffer was simplying parroting what many were already saying. There was nothing about his statement that added anything to the conversation. Everyone understands that, but, what makes it ok? Do we still live in a society that has anyone who has been unfaithful walk around town with a big red letter A on their chest, just so we know who they are? Yes, apparently, we do still live in that archaic mode.

All these people look like fools now because Tiger has taken all responsibility for it and now aims to heal the wounds he (and the mistresses) have inflicted on his family. but, he alone! No one else can help him undo the damage. It's a tall order and I challenge ANYONE to go through what he is going through without throwin their hands up and saying EFF it! It would have been much easier for him to say, I'm just gonna keep playin golf and making millions and forget my family. that isn't Tiger Woods. He's manning up and my hope is that he can do it.”

If I Still Worked at Fox News...

Commented Dec 05, 2009 at 01:39:58 in Media

“Granted, Olbermann puts up a more intellectually based argument than Hannity, who is all spin all the time. The better comparison is probably O"Reilly, who seems to be an intellectual match for Olbermann. The styles of their shows are very different. Olbermann brings on people who agree with him, while O"Reilly likes to spar with those with different views - either to the left or the right of his somewhat eclectic views. I think O'Reilly is more interesting than Olbermann because he fights with the guy right there in front of him, while Olbermann does it through proxies.

Olbermann is ideologically dependable, while O'Reilly will take heretical positions occasionally, This week for example, O'Reilly came out favoring a 2% national sales tax to pay for the war - an idea I though was going to have Cavuto blow an artery over right on the show. I like my news fair and balanced, so I listen to both KO and Billo. Reality lies somewhere in between.”

Indon replied on Dec 07, 2009 at 11:51:49

“Why wouldn't a conservative support a sales tax? It's recessive.”

Billablog replied on Dec 05, 2009 at 02:47:48

“I like Olbermann purely as the anti-O'Reilly but I pity anyone who thinks Countdown is a news program. I find Olbermann has more in common with Jon Stewart - and I mean that as a compliment.

O'Reilly brings on people who disagree with him because his audience wants their news analysis as a blood sport. O'Reilly's occasionally heretical positions (nice description) are, I believe, a set up so he can claim he's independent. And he always keeps them off to one side, he has never taken a clear stand against Republican talking points the way Shepherd Smith has.

While Olbermann likes to get embarrassingly sanctimonious, he does seem to genuinely believe everything he says. With the O'Reillys and Hannitys, they know what's expected of them. Letterman put it best when he said to O'Reilly, "You're too smart to believe this."”

realpolitic replied on Dec 05, 2009 at 02:37:50

“The point I was trying to make was not so much stylistic differences between the two, but substance. I would rather listen to Olbermann speak to like-minded reporters and keep it honest than listen to O'Reilly lie to the like-minded. Also, I do not want to hear O'Reilly shout down and interrupt ideological incompatabile guests like he did with the journalist who called him to task for his repeated accusations that the murdered abortion doctor, Dr. Tiller, was himself a mass murderer. O'Reilly is a school-yard bully!

O'Reilly lies and Olbermann does not. O'Reilly said there was no question that Bush defeated the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan. Does he think he is talking to kindergarteners? Also, O'Reilly calls anyone a fascist who wants to tax the rich and then he calls for a 2% federal sales tax which disportionately falls on the poor. It is a joke! His tax burden is less than it was when Bush the first was in office. If O'Reilly wants war after war let him pay for it.”

“Quality is measured on the Cronkite/Colbert Autoregressive Heteroskedacity Index, Two dependent variables drive the measurement - How well the news cast tells the story measured against the famed Cronkite standard of "and that's the way it is" and a more subjective measure of "truthiness" - the Colbert standard.

The results scientifically indisputable:

CNN 86.3
MSNBC 67.9
Fox News 0.1”

America Without a Middle Class

America Without a Middle Class

Commented Dec 03, 2009 at 05:02:50 in Business

“II don't quarrel with the point of the article, but I do quarrel with the nomenclature, and I think it is important to the discussion.

America has long considered most everyone to be middle class. It was too politically correct to call large numbers of Americans low class and too elitist to identify yourself as upper class.

For discussion purposes, lets put Americans in three classes - Upper: income over $1 mil or assets over $5 mill. Middle: Income 100k - 999k or assets 500k - 4.99 mil Low: income under 100k or assets under 500k.

America under that definition has a large middle class and a huge lower class. Who is hurting - it is the lower class. They are the one competing with foreign workers, they lose they jobs when companies move them overseas, they don't have health insurance, They get hammered when credit card policies change, and suffer the worst with foreclosures.

The real middle class, it is hurting, but it will survive this recession just fine. And the upper class, just gets bigger and richer.”
