Pyrrhic Victoria: Why Men Are Becoming More Like Women
Commented Nov 17, 2009 at 11:26:20 in Living
“Nice idea for an article but I don't buy the premise there are losers here. If there are, it's those who liked the status quo, which as a man I didn't, particularly. My father worked full-time (hospital physician's hours) and Mom stayed home or took classes. My wife and I worked and shared the raising of our kids equally, along with the housework, cooking, and outside stuff. I know I would have valued more of my Dad's presence over the material stuff his work provided, especially as he died young. I've carried that lesson closely as my girls are growing - I don't want to miss being there for them.
Top 100 Corporate america, where my wife and I work, was equalized to a large extent over ten years ago, both in position and pay - it wasn't expressed openly but I don't think its anyone's business what I or my wife earn.
I guess in summary, I agree the change occurred, perhaps longer ago than the author. I do think there's still a lot of denial about this, but that's OK, as long as people aren't shouting or throwing tea bags (or egos) around, we have a big tent.”

“Sorry, I left my stones in my other barrel.
In reverse-order:
2) A federal system, such as Medicaire, is EXACTLY what we need, because leaving it to the states multiplies the decision points on the way to enacting legislation, and we can't wait. Leaving it to the states is also by the way an excellent way of guaranteeing that health maintenance entities are able to continue jacking up the cost of health care by remaining between us and doctors. NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY - they and their executive salaries are what is inflating our costs to a large degree.
1) We didn't have a health care system when the congress enacted the constitution, as you well know. We did however have the precept of equal justice under the law, and putting health care out of the reach of anyone is unjust. (IMHO)
BTW - thank you for the eloquent questions. You're now on my fan list!”

There are a lot of things going on all over that should get more attention: thesimplew ay.org from Philadelphia; bostoncomm unitycapit al.org in Boston; www.main.o rg/standdo wn in Austin TX and hundreds of others. By adding pieces of quiltwork to your site to include more locations, could there be included a litle more advocacy and a little less media sensationalism? We can only hope.
Go go HuffPo!”

The Private Health Insurance Industry is Killing the U.S. Economy
Commented Apr 28, 2009 at 08:49:46 in Politics
“As long as health care is privately controlled, it will be profit-seeking. Once prices are flattened service providers have to differentiate through quality of service - isn't that the way we want our providers to be?”
winchestereast replied on Apr 28, 2009 at 11:39:23
“if you let the insurance industry juggle the data on providers, as they currently do now, you'll see the same amazing errors in their numbers - the profit in the health care industry isn't in providing service, it's in providing insurance - average primary care doctor, with 12 plus years education after high school, makes 149,000 per year - buys his own health insurance, funds his own pension - CEO of united healthcare made 324,000,000 in five years - doesn't sit up nights with dying patients, doesn't take call nights and week-ends, doesn't graduate with six figure debt from med school - isn't responsible for lives, except his own lush life - no one is gonna sue him for his home and savings if they have a bad reaction to a drug or don't survive a risky operation -”

“Would like to see recognition of G.O.P.'s adoption of these disparate groups by the commander-in-chief, as he did with the new 'leader' of the G.O.P., Flush Gumball. I think acknowledging their actions without judgement allows the world to see that their hating hatredness is theirs alone and does not need to be shared, admired, or hated.”

“I marvel at Ann Coulter's 'Christian' affiliations. Are we to believe that Ann is a virgin? After all, she is quite single, and well into her 40s. And though I am not aware of biblical mention of marriage and virginity, surely Coulter has transgressed accepted/t raditional , Christian conservative dogma regarding premarital sex?”

As in that case, though, the race card was played. And could this be the end of Fox's support of the G.O.P. ticket, really? Doubtful. To be sure this one is going to be hard to live down.”
