Fixing the Filibuster

Commented Feb 12, 2010 at 19:48:36 in Politics

“If the Senate starts passing things like the public option, then the Repugs will lose big time. Americans wanted a public option; they oppose the senate bill b/c they watered it down to get weasels like Lieberman and Nelson to go along.
The Dema never had 60 votes to pass anything really progressive b/c the last 5-6 vote were not reliable Dem votes. They were rightards falsely claiming to be Dem so they could get majority assignements on committees.
It's repulsive to me that they allowed Lieberman to keep his chair on Homeland Security after campaigning for McCain.
Or, play like lieberman and threaten to take away his chaiman seat if he doesn't vote yes on the public option. Lieberman's a coward and he would have caved”

Fixing the Filibuster

Commented Feb 12, 2010 at 19:06:42 in Politics

“Where does it say that it takes 67 votes to change the rules of the Senate? In the rules that's where. There's no constitutional basis for it. So, the Dems should just change the rules based on a simple majority.
The Constitution specifies when 2/3 of rhe senate is required and changing or making the procedural rules is not one of those instances.
I think most people believe the filibuster is part of the Constitution. It's time to educate America that this is not true
RESTORE MAJORITY RULE!!!
ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES AND THE REPUGS GOT THROWN OUT”

Patroclus on Feb 12, 2010 at 22:18:02

“Remember, it was the filibuster that allowed the Democrats to prevent Bush from placing even more reactionary justices on the SCOTUS than Roberts and Alito - although it is hard to think of any who could be worse. This is what the Dems fear for they can see in the irrationality of the voters who went for Scott Brown that the Dems could well be in the minority at the end of this year. Thus, there is great reluctance to tube the filibuster.”

“The repeal of Glass-Steagall in 1999 was a major cause of our financial collapse. Both parties bear responsibility for this but Phil Gramm deserves a special place in hell for his leadership in passing the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, which allowed commercial banks, investment banks, securities firms and insurance companies to consolidate and become "too big to fail."
I am hoping Obama gives Elizabeth Warren a high leadership position in the White House and uses her to explain how the repeal of Glass-Steagall permitted the financial services industry to gamble with our money and become wealthy beyond their wildest dreams while bankrupting the rest of us. I have seen her on several TV shows explaining complex high finance ideas so that everyone can understand it.
Obama can get out in front on this and admit that the Dems' joint responsibility for this tragic mistake. Tell the American people that your administration will no longer kowtow to Wall Street and the time to rein these crooks in is past due. Obviously he should have done this last January but he filled his administration with Clintonites who were complicit in the repeal of Glass-Steagall and who apparently still believe that it is OK for the banks to remain too big to fail even after the Sept 2009 collapse. Obama needs to fire all those Clinton hacks and replace them with people like Volcker and Warren. Do it now!!!”

“So what Dan Quayle, I mean Scott Brown, got elected to the Senate. I admit that I do find it sickening that Mass voters would replace Ted Kennedy with a teabagger. But now this guy has to go to Washington and vote with the party of NO. And, as Sen. Lloyd Bentsen once said to Dan Quayle, and is equally applicable to Scott Brown, I knew Jack Kennedy and you are no Jack Kennedy.
Now the Dems need to wake up. You never had 60 votes you could count on and why do you think you need 60 votes to get things done. The Repugs never had 60 votes, did they?
Man up and end the filibuster--cloture crap. It's not in the Constitution and even the procedural rules never intended filibusters to be used on every bill as the Repugs now do.
Remember the up or down campaign the Repugs ran to try and end the filibuster. OK, lets do it. Abolish the filibuster. Bring out the sound bytes of the Repugs whining on and on about up or down. Make them liars. Even if you don't suceed in abolishing the filibuster, you succeed by making every one of those Repug senators a liar.
Just do it!
You have 51 votes; that's all you really need according to the only law that controls--the US Constitution.”

“I just thought I'd let you know that most basic fact, ahead of to time, to give you a chance to "reassess", although I have major doubt you'll be able to appreciate, even though it's in your own absolutely maximum ongoing "political self-interest", the great import of what I just told you, if you can even understand it.

And btw, most Americans COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND that the filibuster, etc., is a great protection, in our system, designed to protect our ALTERNATING Democratic and Republican Congressional minorities, so your notion that Republicans opposing your scheme to "abolish" the filuster option [as all wise DEMOCRATS would also do !], would be seen by the majority voting populace as as "whining", and would therefore be to your great [or "any" !] political benefit, is simply absurd.”

tomterif on Jan 19, 2010 at 23:07:20

“Actually, the ONLY way Dems, behind Rahm Emanuel and Nancy Pelosi, were in any way able to take Congress at all, in 2006, was by recruiting so many "DINO" very conservative Democrats [supporting vigorous military approaches in Afghanistan / Pakistan, wanting no part of across-the-board national public healthcare, etc.], who simply don't want to have much of ANYTHING to do with your "progressive agenda", which merely completely represents a political MINORITY'S agenda in the United States, today.

You can now look forward to the quickly returning REPUBLICAN Congressional majorities, "AmerincanInsurgent", whereupon, if you HAD somehow been able to succeed in repealing our system's majorly precious [for minorities !'] check and balance, of the filibuster option [which you'll NEVER be able to do, btw]...

But if you HAD been able to do that, to your own absolutely unfathombly great political "counter-self-interest", then you and the other "progs" would end up so HOWLING "Oh why oh WHY did we ever go ahead and do THAT ? !", when the soon returning Republican majorities simply walk absolutely every kind of legistion that THEY want, that you IN NO WAY want, right past your noses, into law, without YOUR BEING ABLE TO DO A DAMNED THING ABOUT IT !

All the resident "hyper-progressives" here, like yourself, have absolutely NO IDEA how cluelessly you're simply "biting yourself in the a*s !", by your absolutely desperate current "brainstorm !" strategy you've expressed, at this time, of focusing on "repealing the filibuster", so you can then try to somehow "ram through Congress" as much of your desired legislation [that's in NO WAY desired by the great majority of the American people !] as your always tenuous [not only never a "landslide", but never even any kind of a significant "mandate" !] Congressional majorities RAPIDLY slip away, in the rapidly approaching 2010 Mid-term elections.

What underlies your great desire for this repeal of the filibuster is the utterly self-deluded fantasy, you and your like-minded individuals convinced yourself of, that the Republican party was "dead", after the 2008 elections, while the absolute reality was that it wasn't even significantly INJURED, at that time, as we first clearly saw in the New Jersey and Virginia 2009 Governor's races, and we've seen tonight, and we'll see again, at many, MANY times this magnitude, a mere ten months from now. "Ohio Republican Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell hired Connell in 2004 to create a real-time computer data compilation for counting Ohio’s votes. Under Connell’s supervision, Ohio’s presidential vote count was transmitted to private, partisan computer servers owned by SmartTech housed in the basement of the Old Pioneer Bank building in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Connell’s company, New Media Communications worked closely with SmartTech in building Republican and right-wing websites that were hosted on SmartTech servers. Among Connell’s clients were the Republican National Committee, Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and gwb43.com. The SmartTech servers at one point housed Karl Rove’s emails. Some of Rove’s email files have since mysteriously disappeared despite repeated court-sanctioned attempts to review them. "

Even now, these corporatist rightards don't get it; the deregulation of corporatist criminals since Raygun and his tinkle down economic theory has resulted in the largest redistribution of wealth in history to the already filthy rich. These racists are trying to blame the meltdown on too many blacks qualifying for mortgages. The Repugs have deregulated and refused to enforce regs so that the greedy corporatists could rip us all off.
For once, it seems like the MSM won't let the Repugs get away with trying to claim that they favored regulation of their corporate thief friends all along.
Now to drill the message into the voters' minds McCain's complicity in the S&L collapse as part of the Keating 5 must be shouted far and wide.
Please, please confront McCain with the Keating 5 at the debates. McCain may blow a gasket. And the 527's can certainly create some nice commercials about the Keating 5 being clear evidence of where John McCain stands on the economic meltdown. McCain is a schill for the corporations.

The Repugs make these statements that it is a private family matter, which is technically true, but in reality nothing is private when you decide to run for VP of the United States.
