“The flag portion of this video is maybe the most controversial part so it comes as no surprise that is what readers and viewers are responding to but, it is the overall meaning that makes this a worthwhile time spent in the viewing.

I had suspended thoughts and feelings about KW. I don't appreciate anti-female comments (or lyrics) for one thing. I think this artist is a genius because he points with strength and openness, his love of himself (yes, himself!), God, his family and his wife, not in that order but, those values make him much more than he sometimes portrays himself to be. I like the fact that he confessed as much in this interview.

He is a rapper with ideas, an unusual concept but, he has the gift of a multitude of talents. He writes, performs, sings, designs, has business acumen and on and on. The artist known as Prince has only a fraction of that and he's called a "genius" from day one. I remember when he first started out, he was called a genius in the press. Why is that? I wonder.

KW has God given genius. One need not like him but, it can't be taken away from him. I think his new family will anchor him and I hope it will.

Where else do we get all that we have, than from God? Or, in the case of very bad people, it's not godlliness that one gets, it's the other thing.”

“I've lived in NYC area my entire life and although we have our share of racists to be sure, it's not exactly like elsewhere in the U.S. What I meant in the context of this article is, who would have thought that an African American would market the very symbol of racism and hatred? I am sure no one would have thought an African American would be doing this, that should have been clear but obviously it was not.

It's like the N-word. Old schoolers and people who have every right to their feelings about this as being sacrilige and, those who use it freely as a coopted word that has a positive meaning for them as a term of endearment. Everyone has their own take on this. Many people use the N-word and others will kill you if you are AA and you do. It cannot be said in my family without opening a can of worms. Both are right from their own perspective. Hope this clarifies things for those who think I am from Mars and clueless.”

“I took quite a few lessons watching this video, thank you for posting it, Julee Wilson and HuffPost. Kanye West may or may not be anyone's cup of tea but, he is a creative genius and obviously has a lot to say and a vision for not only his brand, but for the future. He reminds me somewhat of Mohammed Ali when Ali was young, brash and in your face.

Congratulations to him on little one and engagement to perhaps the most beautiful dark beauty since Elizabeth Taylor. I like him and I like what he has to say about future youth trends looking forward.

The future is with the young, thankfully and sometimes the young are genius, brash and fearless and we who are older and may not understand the future as it presents itself before us in entertainers such as Kanye West. We have to admire and respect the very fearless, imperfect manifestation of the gifts those who are with God and with genius have to bring.

Confederate flag T-shirts? Who would have thought of it and then, materialized it. We need brotherhood, sisterhood, fellowship, friendship, art, genius, innovation and a certain degree of madness for this great country of ours to move forward.

Kanye West has a lot if not all of those ingredients and then much, much more, in my estimation and, I for one am grateful he is at his very roots, not British or this or that but, American to the core.”

“"Confederate flag T-shirts? Who would have thought of it and then, materialized it." I'm not sure where you've been but people have been selling confederate flag t-shirts for years. Since you obviously haven't been out much to see all the shirts, bumper stickers, flags painted on truck, and cars, waived around at klan rallies...etc. The flag, no matter how people try to rewrite the history of it, was used by the southern states who tried to leave the union because the northern states wanted to abolish slavery, plain and simple. All you have to do is a little research and you can find each states documented reason for wanting to leave the states as is was filed with the government.”

She also seems to have every race (and gender?) represented so how can you go wrong with that? Her use of Easter egg colors is very cool. What's not to like? I must add that she does it all much better than what's his name? De Kookoo, I mean De Kooning if that's how you spell it whose work was distinctly not sexy. Ms. Brown's paintings on the other hand, they sort of connect the dots in a sexy kind of way. So I say, two thumbs up for this artist and two thumbs down for De Kookoo.”

“Ms. Maier was a prolific genius who transcended her gender and transformed an art form. She did what she obviously came into this world to do, and in my opinion stands with the best photographers we can point to as the greatest, American or otherwise. There are many people who think she is a small talent but, they would be wrong. The world (and the fortunate young men who possess her archives) gets the benefit of this self taught and natural genius of photography. What else can we ask for? The time in which she lived (and the time we live in now) is not conducive to any real degree of recognition of but a few female photographers and, when you compare and contrast, these, highest earning women photographers and their contributions pales in comparison to Ms. Maier's. She was simply the very best. I for one am very grateful to her for her contribution and see her as an American icon of the highest artistic caliber.”

How many times do the stars like this have to sell their souls not just their music or product? Isn't the contract a singular one? Sorry for her and her family. “There is usually a certain amount of soreness against one's competitors in losing to them, whether spoken out loud or kept to one's self. The Fed spokesman should be ashamed of himself and I suppose an apology may or may not be enough. I believe that if the translation we read here coming from the Italian athlete is correct, she is genuinely sorry for the wise crack which in my opinion is not a racist comment in the first place. Many people and many people of color believe as much that African American athletes have a superior edge over white athletes. Who can say whether for certain, this is true or not at the world class level or elsewise? Sometimes the disadvantage blacks have experienced in many avenues in life propels them to push harder and to be far better prepared than they might otherwise be had they been born other than African American. I wonder if the same is true for African athletes, and it would make a good question for interviews with them, exactly how they feel about being an African athlete and winning gold for example at the world class level. Is there a difference? Gold is always gold. It is not silver or bronze or anything but what it is, it is the very best of the medals and only the very best of the athletes win it, in the end, no matter their color.”

“The actor's honesty and candidness is to be admired. It is not a joke however, and from online sources in recent times; it is specifically, Caucasian males who have the highest incidence of oral cancer and for this very reason. It does give us all pause for thought. Sex is fun but, guys, cool it with all the unnecessary foreplay that could cost you your life. Google for more info and change a bad habit to a better one. Cheers!”

danapark71 on Jun 3, 2013 at 13:46:53

“Anna, who decides that oral sex is an "unnecessary foreplay"? I am an addictions counselor and have been for many years. For funding reasons, the treatment center that I worked in for most of my professional life had to have HIV/AIDS education twice a year. The counselors flipped coins to get out of teaching the class. I lost a couple of times and had to do it. The state gave us the packet of info that we had to tell the women. It had ways of protection for every group you can think of but that was never part of it. They had a packet though for lesbians to keep them from getting these diseases from oral sex in which those said it's best to take a piece of plastic wrap and place it over your partner's genitals to keep you from gettiing HIV. It even came with pictures which I had a hard time passing around and desribing the info with a straight face just as much as the women had listening to it. So, I'm assuming that the same could be done for men who want to continue giving oral sex to their female partners. I have heard every crude joke possible when I shared this info with some male friends but I know the HP censors will never let me put them here so use your imagination and your sense of humor!!!”

Commented Mar 25, 2013 at 22:33:09 in Books

“Phillip Roth makes a compelling argument here with this statement and, I agree. The profusion of distractions that all the new media lure our attention with is overwhelming. The hand held devices offer something sweeter, something richer, color, video, movement that spells it all out with graphics and videos and the "serious" books that Phillip Roth mentions here are here to stay. Serious readers will always exist, I believe however that their numbers will continue to decline. It takes too much action on the part of the serious reader. What exists in place of conventional books these days is far too appealing because, they provide the kind of passive (as opposed to active) participation that is simply easier. I agree with Mr. Roth. The minds will get flabbier at the same time more stimulated. It does not bode well for mental health or enjoyment if the transition is complete from active reader/thinker to passive/absorber/stimulus addict. We do however get to choose.”

Joseph Scott on Mar 25, 2013 at 22:53:24

“Well said. Devices that spill color and movement, responding to our every touch, are very compelling, biologically, in that our physiology rewards us for holding still, and tracking a moving object across our line of vision. The body lowers the blood pressure, among other things, and gives us a "good" feeling for doing the behavior, which probably worked well for encouraging our millions of years spent scanning horizon lines for ...food or enemies,or friends,I suppose.
This physiological reaction, of pleasure, some researchers are saying accounts for the "addictive" nature of television. Sit down, turn the t.v.down,and you do...relax. Briefly.
Here's therub. The effect diminishes and the person gets agitated as they seek, increasingly, by watching more or flicking around for novelty, to get that feeing back.

The device(s) have the upper hand. And whether people want to labor through reading, as Burke has said to produce in us a site of enculturation, well, that starts to fade ....naturally.
Addiction would be the template that explains the phenomena to me. And a human desire to escape "effort."”

“Go down fighting? Go down graciously? Either way, all good things come to an end. Jay is the best but it looks pretty certain that the young contender, cute as he could be and full of talent, Jimmy Fallon will be sitting in Pappy Bear's seat in the wink of an eye. Better than duking it out fist to cuff, watching Big Boys like these players battle it out in the press where testosterone rules the day and ever bigger paychecks are driving it all. Better than watching race car driving for fans of Fallon, Kimmel and Jay Leno and, I love them all.

I have no favorites, however; the new must replace the old. It's simply a natural fact so, I think Jay will be ousted although obviously not without a good old fight!

However, one question comes to mind as I read of these battles :
When will the girls get a chance to play with the Big Boys? Is there an answer to that question?

I would simply love to see Wendy host her own late night show. She has all the necessary requirements and knows how to work a mic. Wendy, throw your hat into the ring! Please, please, please.”

“Why doesn't this discussion cover what exactly is involved in the therapy aside from the what is only vaguely mentioned above? If the option is for health care providers to for example calibrate hormone levels and calibrate replacement therapy, there might be a benefit and value to a therapy like that. Hormonal imbalances are problematic for many people, women before during and after menopause and men as well who undergo feminization as they age and their male hormone levels drop. Why not the same for young people who have unbalanced hormonal levels that cause confusion about their sexual identity and gender roles etc.? It in fact primarily be a physiologic imbalance of hormones and not a psychological disorder as mentioned above and frequently pointed to. The psychological problems may very well be secondary.”

“Planet Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius is the perfect time to be sorting, discarding and generally going through the past to move forward with the future. I too have gone through about forty years of accumulated odds and ends, letters, papers, statements, notes, journals etc. I did so furiously at first, pushing myself to get on with it finally. I discarded eight, ten, twelve large garbage bags of unwanted clothes that had clogged my closet and so many memorabilia from the past. I am glad most of it is gone. Some of it under different circumstances might still be remaining but, all of it is gone. Better to travel light and to look back when the time comes, to those moments and memories in the past even if just quickly, before saying good-bye. Good-bye to just how much it hurt or it made me proud or how ridiculous it was and more. There is time left for each one of us to accumulate more and sift through the past again. I for one am very tired of thinking about, reading about, seeing pictures of and having to be reminded that an American artist of perhaps only commercial art value is King of the art world when he is not. Forgive me. I am sorry for the rant here but contrary to appearances to the contrary, I think Warhol is extremely over rated and needs to rest in peace. Please?”
