“Did it ever occur to you that she needs cash for the bus? I do not know how the CA public transportation system works but here in Philly the buses will only accept cash, tokens or bus passes. You can use credit/debit to buy tokens or passes but only at SEPTA locations. It is not always easy to get to those locations and people rely on buying their tokens and passes from the local stores that sell them. These local stores will accept only cash for SEPTA purchases. There are plenty of other reasons for using cash besides cigarettes and alcohol, but of course you don't see that.”

“No I really don't. The welfare card sare for buying necessities. And she has other income too. I just dont' see why she would need to get cash out of that card. The only time I use cash is when tipping the hotel maid or the valet. That's about it.”

“I also worked there for 5 years before quitting. Black Friday has always started early for the associates. Everything needs to be out and ready ahead of time and that means going in on Thanksgiving day to do that. My typical hours for that time period was to go in from 6 a.m. until 3 p.m. and back in at 11 p.m. Thanksgiving day. The cash office is not a place that can be put off for later. A friend of mine who still works there went in yesterday from 1 p.m. until 1 a.m. and she should be arriving there now, 7:00 a.m., for her next shift.”

As long as the parents are there with their children helping them learn that is what is important. “The above poster is correct, in some states there are cut-off dates. My daughter started school when she was 5 years-old. When Kindergarten had ended she had already turned 6 in the beginning of the month and was 19 when she graduated. Even so there are other factors that could have been involved. My middle son was held back a year and started Kindergarten when he was 6 years-old. While testing him for Kindergarten both I and the school decided he was not ready yet. It was apparently the right decision as he did quite well for the remainder of his school career.”

“Not necessarily, my daughter turned 19 in June of the year she graduated. Because of the cut-off date for Kindergarten she started school the September after she turned 5. The Philadelphia schools run from the beginning of September until the end of June and her birthday is the beginning of June. She finished Kindergarten after she had turned 6 years-old. I'm not sure of Chicago's cut-off dates.”

“That is true and I agree with you that they are employing people at the bottom 1 %. I speak from experience. Most of my adult working life was in an office as an administrative assistant. After being laid off 5 years ago I landed at Walmart. I spent the first year on the sales floor but was quickly promoted to the accounting office. The problem with Walmart is even when they find employees who have more skills and a strong work ethic they still abuse them. I kept trying to tell myself that putting up with low pay/benefits would pay off in the future and found that was not going to happen. When managers don't care about irate customers and you have other associates complain that you are "too old school South Philly", the stress isn't worth it. Apparently "old school South Philly" meant to them that I would do my best no matter what position I was in and there were those who did not like that.”

“You mean the same people you are complaining about that should be going to school and acquiring new skills? Those drop outs then become the 27 year-old people you are complaining about. And while we are at it, what is wrong with someone enjoying working as a cashier? We need people in those positions who like what they are doing to provide the best customer service possible. I don't know about you but I prefer doing business with stores where I know the employees are happy and willing to do what they can to provide a pleasant experience. A happy employee brings in more customers and more profit. These so called "low skill" jobs should have, at minimum, cost of living raises.”

SpaceMonkeys on Oct 25, 2013 at 11:48:41

“There are many living wage skill sets that do not require high school degrees. You make a good point, though, I don't shop at Walmart because they hire the bottom 1% of workers. Nordstrom's pays well and is able to hire better workers. However, the bottom 1% still need jobs of some sort, otherwise, we will be stuck paying 100% of their social welfare costs. Even though, I don't like McDonalds or Walmart at least they are employing these people.”

“I'm still trying to figure out where all those full-time associates are. In the offices or in management, yes. Ask any of the floor associates or cashier how many hours a week they are scheduled to work. Even the in-store offices are not immune to having their hours cut.
When I left Walmart I was making $10.00 an hour as an accounting associate and had full-time hours. It took me 4 years to get up to making $10.00 an hour and in spite of having me work in an office that was supposed to have 2 people working in there, they kept trying like heck to cut my hours. As for being able to move up, oh that's funny! I was begging to leave that nightmare of an office so much that I offered to step down! In return I was told I was needed there in the cash office (read: no one else wanted that nightmare) and told if I didn't like the working conditions I could go find other employment. As you read above: When I left Walmart.”

I have a 7 year old autistic granddaughter and know the difference between a meltdown and her throwing a fit over something she wants and can't have. It took a while to learn the difference but now that she is starting to communicate it has become easier. During a true meltdown there is no consoling her but a tantrum because she can't have a cookie for dinner she can be reasoned with.”
