Why Weren't H1N1 Vacccines Available for Our Children Before School Started?
Commented Oct 31, 2009 at 12:35:22 in Politics
“I'm a teacher for NYC and what a sham that vaccination program is. First - there was not a DOT of information until the PACKET came out this week, with instructions that it'd need to be signed or NOT within acouple or few days for vaccinations to begin next week. NYC Mayor Bloomberg saw this as a pro-active attempt to get his face OUT ahead of the curve (in his bid for an illegal third term) : A CRISIS Free Vaccines for ALL kids. But he is totally not prepared for this project. Let the lawsuits begin.
The rumors about the dangers of the vaccine so OUTSHINE any valid information. I hear teachers discussing the horror stories from what they've LEARNED on Facebook (come on, shouldn't educators be educated??). I've personally heard the principal discourage parents when they pop in for quick MIS-information about the danger of the vaccine. We're all at the mercy of this flu. And it's so easily resolved with a vaccination. The problem is that NYC Dept of Education is not qualified to handle anything BIG or REAL. If my kids were small I'd say YES to the vaccine NO to NYC DOE administrering it. And YES to figuring out a better system in time for something more seriousl!”

Dear America: Letter From a Muslim-American
Commented Sep 28, 2009 at 08:49:10 in Politics
“There are those in America who live to marginalize others: it's likely the Muslim community is just the latest flavor of the month. America has harbored dark sentiments towards many of its own. In fact, it's very often those who are discriminated against who are the next ones to discriminate. (I thought it was amusing in Staten Island NYC that one of the bat wielding crazy-boys who went beserk through the neighborhood (beating up black youths) after Obama's win was: Hispanic!! He was running with a group of Italo-boys. It's like he didn't even realize that they'd just as likely turn their bats on him.
I hope the Muslim/Middle Eastern time at bat will be short-lived. America, unfortunately, has a mighty big rep for being openminded and tolerant, but OFTEN fails to meet its own standards.”

Mass Teacher Layoffs in D.C. Amount To One Hell of a Power Play by Michelle Rhee

“You'd think they'd have learned from the failed Bloomberg policies in NYC - saying it works DOESN'T MAKE IT WORK. Changing the name of a program, tweaking it for year-after-year for six years - doesn't make a school system any better. Removing veteran teachers to recruit a parade of newbies willing to take half salary isn't helping students. (It's merely beating down the union... Welcome to the new America, which works tirelessly with the birthers, panelists and anti-gov anti-unionist folks to defeat our hard-fought battles for fair working conditions (aka unions). Veteran teachers don't make a system bad - on the contrary: they make it good. Having the accommodating newbie-teacher come in to try calming the chaos (with no real time or practical experience) is folly ! It's the product of Bad Administration which thinks education can be developed out of a boardroom. That's what it's like in the college preparation to teaching - NOT in teaching.
They throw the baby OUT with the bath water EVERY TIME (to curry favor with the likes of Teacher's College or whatever is the DC version of WHY Johnie Can't Read (and by the time it's obvious they have failed YET AGAIN, there's yet another generation who have fallen through the cracks while at the same time their (NYC) fearless leader will be breaking term limits to make sure our school system fails on his watch (using the same Bushworthy tabulations for our success).”

“I think to the hooplah, Van Jones should have expressed his conspiracy theories out loud regarding 9/11. AlQuaida HAD TO be jubilant about the extent of the damage it accomplished that day (emotional, psychological and actual). It darkened the skies, hearts and souls of the greatest nation on earth (and corralled the world into our sorrow). They NAILED IT.
Van Jones, like many many Americans, had a right (nay: obligation) to ask HOW. Being in Bush America which was joking about where to find WWDs. YEAH I'd say we ALL have the right STILL (and deserve the explanation of HOW). Rather than Van Jones having to slink away - from that lowlife trashbag Glen Beck, he should proudly demore more than a bi-partisan panel of pretenders.
HOW is it possible that the second plane had a clear path in to topple another tower. I find that inconceivable in the United States of Amerca. And asking that is not making me a birther or death panelist - it makes me an educated consumer of media milktoast ...I WONDER, is all. “When it comes to this Education speech - I think it was ill-advised to begin with . Even Hillary jabbed him in the primary about the emptiness of speech giving. Yeah like kids are a captive audience JUST BECAUSE they are in school !!?? And this guy was a teacher ??
Anything he does is red meat for the Republicans because they are TOO STARVING in their own right. (They are the party of : What Can We Say about What He Just Said). Not only are they grabbing at it but gagging on it. PLUS He'll have to dumb down the speech and pump up the volume to motivate them. And REALLY - we had an inauguration just months ago to rally the nation. He could have just put the video on the White House site.
I'd say - let states who are so hyperventilating about this 'brainwashing': OPT OUT. Let their citizenry see the pettyiness in their true colors.”

Obama, the Birthers, and American National Identity

The Skip Gates Arrest May Not Have Been About Race -- But About Something Even Worse
Commented Jul 28, 2009 at 14:32:38 in Politics
“That bothered me alot as well, that the arrest was about Gate's verbal pushback. I remember 40 years ago my dad was beaten up by a cop (aided by other cops who had been called as backup..for no good reason). The scenario: the cop told my father he was a stupid ass, so my dad answered : I'm not a stupid ass, you're a stupid ass. Cop (and his 'assistants' ) made mincemeat ot my dad's face. Needless to say, Dad got no satisfaction - that was 40 years ago. My daughter, only last year in Queens NYC, was accosted by an unmarked van of cops; she asked for ID and they pinned her against the van for the 'perceived' insult to their authority.
Cops can be brave and honorable (but sometimes they're NOT); and the ones who band together behind them, in defense of those rotten apples (just because they're in the same profession) are worse than the bullies because they are cowardly cops.”

“My brother has been beaten down several times by police in the drunk tank so I definately see where your coming from.
On the whole, this officer didn't assault Professor Gates nor is there really any indication that he initiated the confrontation (unless you consider doing his job instigating, apperantly some people do). He should not have arrested Professor Gates for dis-orederly conduct because he fealt insulted.
Professor Gates played a very large role in the altercation as well. Let's be fair, Officer Crowley (whom we don't know to be a racist) is also a citizen of this country and no matter his profession or training should not have to endure unwarranted racial slandering, and various insults for fulfilling his duty as a public servant. A lot of things that cops do piss us off. Myself included. I can't even watch an episode of cops on T.V. because I get too P.O'd at some of the cops attitudes. Having said that the police are a necessary part of our society. Working to pass legislation to prohibit police abuse of authority and or working to remove petty catch-all charges like dis-orderly conduct are all viable avenues that we as americans can and should pursue. Antagonizing a cop while he is on duty is not how you fix these things.
Let's not judge every situation involving a cop out of our own personal bias, as it seems clear in this case that Professor Gates did just that.”

Obama Backtracks Calling Police Action Stupid: Was It Moderation or Is Obama Becoming the First Wimp?
Commented Jul 27, 2009 at 09:17:03 in Politics
“I think it was Obama's realizing that he used a bad choice of words; that happens at times, especially after an hour long news conference and question/answer period. As it was, he couldn't stick the words back into his mouth. The writer of this article, on the other hand, had time to reflect and STILL chose to call the President of the United States: the First Wimp. I'm glad that the President was thoughtful in his retraction of his poorly chosen word.
I also think the Cambridge police union is falling all over itself to use a series of wrong words as it continues to justify. The fact that there are very brave men and women in law ennforcement , putting their lives in danger everyday, has NOTHING to do with cops who abuse authority PERIOD. The situation was obvious. Gates didn't raise his hands - but did raise his voice. Is that NOT allowed in America? When did cops become hallowed territory? Obama took just the right tone to open this dialog.”

Media Feeding Frenzy Cheats Viewers

“I am ASHAMED of the media's reaction to Michael Jackson's death. For years, the King of Pop was persona non grata in the news, portrayed with contempt and mockery. But NOW tthat the media is hovering all over him on his death bed - death day - with their contrived pretenses of sentimentality . .
The people loved him - the media used him (and is continuing to do so). I wondered.... how had they reconciled their past never-not-negative coverage with this over-the-top seemingly sensitive coverage. But they're back. They got a ton of ammo now and gave their day of mourning. Now, they're busily doing the quirky dad, the baby- making mommies, the vast holdings, etc. All Michael is to them is a story - to MILK for all it's worth.
Personally, I think Michael was an extraordinarily talented, emotionally diabled man/child. I believe he saw his scary dad's face in his own on the Thriller video - so went white and different. I believe he loved the boys he befriended and valued them, not in a sexual sense, but in a conflicted father to son sense and tween boy to boy sense. The reason he was not found guilty is that it couldn't be established that he was - because society has lines Michael couldn't color within. He needed a good shrink to teach him how to play by the black and white rules of our society and not the flamboyant ones of his making. The media stinks”

So John Edwards Had An Affair -- Grow Up, Adultery Is Not a Political Issue.
Commented May 16, 2009 at 08:58:21 in Politics
“People who are unhappy in their marriage: break up. Choosing to remain within it, while cheating, is a deception. It gives one party the unfair advantage of being able to engage in 'party' sex, which means getting the lights low, the champagne to flow and the nighties to show. Elizabeth might well have wanted some fun in her romantic life too, after being married the same number of monotonous years to the boring (albeit pretty) John. So unless both parties in a marriage are invited to take a 'romance break' to recharge their love buttons and re-engage their sleeping sexual egos, it's unfair.
It's about character, and what gets exposed inside the bedroom surely reflects what a candidate will do outside the bedroom. John, playing the game while his wife was ill, seems (to me) further evidence that the man is weak and shallow. (In fact, the Bill-Hill thing didn't seem nearly as bad, as I viewed him as a sex addict who 'behaved' for the better part of the 8 years ... it's hard. I am also amazed that Bush didn't come toppling down the White House steps after a binge one night. Eight Years is a Long Time to remain 'good'. But, to fall off the wagon - as Edwards did - while walking up the campaign trail - showed him to be a WEAKLING !! (in my book)”

Bigger then Blacks, gays and Hispanics, where are our rights and when do we become a group that has respect and not just made fun of, for even bring up an issue.
Is it ok for Obama to make fun of groups that hate abortion or wants to cure aids? Is it funny to bring up the War and the soldgers that have died, or 9/11, is that a funny issue? We have an issue that is very important to us and he makes fun of it and those who asked it? We are thinking the War on Drugs has failed us and it needs fixed. “He certainly would not have raised the campaign cash he did and would not have kicked Hillary"s fannie. After all there were countless reports on just about all stations during the campaign and post election that gave the online movement a lot of credit, in both directions. It will be very unwise for the administration to believe that this issue voted number one, is somehow going away. (You could vote only once on each question so it really is number one) There are currently 4 open blogs on this subject at HPost, so to think that this is not an issue worthy of respectful debate now on the governmental level will pay the price during the next election. This applies not only to this issue, but also to such things as Health care, education and the deficit. The 25 billion dollars that are spent on incarcerating non-violent drug offenders could put over 400,000 new teachers in schools. The failed drugwar is intricately interconnected with many issues due to the sheer magnitude of the money involved. Lets get this done without prejudice and based on science, the time is NOW.”

“Am I the only one thinking there's been a total 'misread' about the President's laugh and response to the pot question? Sometimes a little laugh, such as that, constitutes mild embarrassment. Sometimes it expresses other thoughts - such as, Not NOW kiddies - we've got bigger fish to fry.
This topic has not yet been seriously weighed re: the consequences of smoking pot on a regular basis. I am an affecionado (but of the type who uses rarely). Even at that - I sense what COULD be potentially serious problems associated with easy availability. I've known people who can put away far far more than I can even imagine. That's got to have some serious lung implications, as well as the freedom from inhibitions thing that could easily spell disaster for maintaining a healthy diet and one's having self control. Compound that with the freedom of usage among young people who still have high school and college in front of them (or work) - it's BIG. So the fact that the President of the United States wants to put it on the back burner for now makes TOTAL sense to me.
I'd rather see him address the Webb talk about how drugs has contributed to the shamefully huge numbers in our prison populations. That could be a number one peripheral issue: getting people out of jail and into life (rather than getting the rest of us high).”

“I too have wondered why so much 'concern' over ALL the issues the Prez is willing to address. I realize it's different from the way things had been done. But that's exactly the reason WHY things need to be addressed (and on a timely basis). Time becomes the equalizer or neutralizer (or sedative...as it were) if allowed to just drag on the old Bush way. The easiest way to have more of the same is by merely opening up some sham of an investigative panel to 'look into' the issues of the day - first deciding who's most qualified to lead it (assuring it's bi-partisian, so that each side can slant their remarks)
Another congressional hearing ...where it's 20-40 minutes for prayer and honoring somebody, 15 minutes for each panelists to spew their spin on the subject and then an hour or so for the pols to get on camera in between procedural nonsense. ON TO LUNCH and the sluggish afternoon to digest (not the issues: the food). That would have worked fine for a Prez who is 70something. But we've got bigger fish to fry. I'm fine with putting more on the Prez' plate. He's a young bright man - let him earn his keep.”

Most humans feel a natural desire to parent (regardless of whether it is mothering or fathering). If life were as easy as having a mother's touch to provide a child with the support he or she needs, we'd all be in great shape. Unfortunately - it's not. That's merely the Hallmark version of parenting. But many kids, by circumstances far different from what is described in this article, are lacking either the father to a son or mother to a daughter's touch. In fact .. my son was raised primarily by me and grew into a fine young man. A dad who is shell-shocked that his surrogate gave birth to a gal is gonna have some real serious challenges when he gets to the adolescent to teen years. Brace Yourself dad - even a mom couldn't help make that an easy ride for you.”

“Where did you get the idea the author was shocked that he has daughters rather than sons? I reread this and the previous article and found no such comment.”

“See, I didn't catch anything in the article about him being 'uncomfortable parenting a daughter.' The gender of the children was not the point at all. It was about the uncertain dichotomy of having a surrogate plus an egg donor.
Anyway, Max, as long as you stay this concerned and caring for your children, you are going to be a great parent, one day they may want to know their 'mother' but I would bet you they'll still love you guys (the parents who raised them and they have lots of loving memories with) more. :P
Also I was just listening to npr, and they were doing an interesting story of people who, since you can never know the identity of the egg donor, would try and find 'siblings' as in others children who have used the same egg or sperm donor. Kinda interesting stuff, the kids seemed to love it.”

“Excellent comment. I sometimes think that the "point" of such a post is to "expose" anyone who disagrees, even a little bit, as a vicious homophobe. In fact, the author has invited comments by making the post, and people should be able to freely discuss the nuances of our real world.”
Brown v. Monkey

“Domestic violence is as white a problem as it is black. Todays young women and teen gals were schooled during this dark period of GOP non-reality. Everything in our country suffered over the last decade. Clean Air Initiatives polluting the air. No Child Left Behind being used as a centerpiece for leaving kids back. Tainted food products and a corrupt and scheming corporate America. The pretense of morality and values has only led to a more shallow and sex-driven nation. I guess it worked for them.
But the cops and monkey cartoon stands alone and is foul smelling to any American who is tired of the ugliness and has had enough of the abrasive mongering which went on during our recent past and NOW in the extreme. This is where we TODAY stand up for America and its real values. Tomorrow we can take up the task of re-educating our young women as to what NOT to accept from any man. It's hard to believe we are back here: but what's that they say about those who forget their history are doomed to repeat it. Women will rise again. We just got a little distracted and off course. I think Obama will open a door to revisit that necessary dialog.”

You do realize that domestic violence was around long before the last eight years. And exactly how do all your pet environmental issues effect domestic violence?”

Are we all to Blame for the Rise of the Crazy Octuplet Mom?

“We: being to blame...as long as you're factoring in America's incessant need to remain shallow and 'news' or 'celebrity' absorbed. We've already had the plumber turned MidEast war reporter. There's obviously an appetite for sensationalism and the 'guy/gal' next door seems to take on the biggest headlines, as though they are really - merely only a guy/gal next door.
Oct-Mom would be laughable, if her saga didn't involve children! This is NO mother (in any woman's fantasy). I can understand a woman yearning to experience motherhood - willing to raise a child alone (if need be). But to make this number of pregnancies and babies merely a show for the world to gawk at, and seemingly only for the benefit of the dollars and publicity (and in so doing making 14 little ones the victims of so much media scrutiny and public mockery... It's UGLY) . I think the brood should be taken from her for their emotional well being. There are loving and balanced homes looking to welcome her babies. This lady is a fruitcake.”

Follow Jesus Like Nazis Followed Hitler, Rick Warren Tells Stadium Crowd

“A lot of the commitment engaged in Hitler's Germany was promoted through fear and by the pumping of pride in nationalism and ego. Jesus didn't rally Christians in fear, rather in knowledge and love. They didn't follow him to overcome the 'people' but to overcome themselves. Blind following is not part of a Christians concept. The fact that it seemed to be was merely a Republican ploy to weave together the fabric of a following by taking strands of Christian truths and attempting to bond them together with crazy glue. What was good and truly Christian bonded and what was not didn't.”
