The Religious Decade: 2000 To 2010

“You are right, religion will never go away. What is essential is how do we remove the cancer of extremism/ fundamenta lism? I sure hope it is not terminal because for all the doomsday scenarios in my opinion require religion to set into motion. If the clocks ever stop at 1:17 as they do in The Road, it will be because of relgiously based fascism.”

“Fanned for your great post. One important note is the most powerful books to help people escape the iIIness of xtian extremism are not books by Dawkins, Hitchens, Harris et al but the brilliant books by xtian extremism escapees like Bart Ehrman, Valerie Tarico (one of HP's finest contributors), Frank Schaeffer, William Lobdell and many others.”

“If you are suggesting that religion should not be used as a poltiical litmus test and our government should be of/by/for the people not of/by/for a certain extremist genre of xtians, I could not agree with you more.
Unfortunately your fellow xtians would put an immediate stop payment on that check and probably denegrate you for your tolerant, respectful stand.”

“I agree - would be a simple edit to replace Atheism as a "religion" with "a movement." Aside from that all in all, a well done list.”

“:-))) These scam artists are using the gov't airwaves to generate MILLIONS of dollars of income every year. If they are going to "sell" miracle prayer cloths, miracle annointed wafers, annointed oils to heal all illness, etc etc, these modern day snake oil salesmen should have to pay income tax on every dollar generated through TV "prayer lines"!”

“These scheisters sure did live/are living the high life by browbeating fearful seniors out of their "widow's mites". (Reference: bible quote in which Jeesus praises an old lady for donating her two "mites" - coins of barely any value - which was all she had to her name. I bet that quote was used again and again to coax every last penny from seniors and other fearful, gullible victims who were already living hand to mouth.”

“Fascinating insight into soldiers and increases in "kill rates." I fear this may also be due to the increasing xtian fundamentalization of our troops. What happens to such kill rates (civilians included), when soldiers genuinely believe as fact that their Jeesus *wants* them to kill ? What happens to our country and our world? A ruinous religious experiment is going on in America right now.”

“Fanned! Now the stores replace the Halloween candy by Nov 1st with the xmas stuff. Thanksgiving is ignored which infuriates me. For me Thanksgiving is the highlight of the season and then it's all downhill til Dec 26, with the same conspicuous consumption and chance for all the religious nutters to crawl out of the woodwork.”

“Seriously, I once spent quite a bit of time in London in December. The whole feel of xmas, which I am not a fan of, was completely and very pleasantly different. Sure, there was plenty of shopping, but for openers there was no absurd "Jeeeesus is the reason fer thuh season" nonsense. An international flavor, particularly the xmas tree lighting in Trafalger Square. Yes, the weather was bad - rain and no snow - but I'd go back again if I could.”

“Valerie, you reminded me of a story in a similar vein: I saw a tractor trailer truck with a big anti-@b0rtion sign on the back of the rig "It is not a choice - it is a child" - a permanent sign installed by the trucking company, in perfect condition, to demonstrate their political and religous purity.
Also on the back was one of those stickers that read: "For driving complaints call..." -- only the phone number had been scraped off.
Nuff said.”

“BTW, in 2004 there were megachurches that literally ordered their followers to vote for GWB. They should have long since lost their tax exempt status. Yes, xtianity in America needs to be de-fundamentalized and de-politicized. If they don't want to do that then let them start paying taxes at a bare minimum.”

“Sure my answer "followed. " xtian fundamentalism in the US has risen to a power in American politics that it has subsumed the republican party. If you doubt the vast power it has on the GOP, again, read Max Blumenthal's book and articles here on HP for yourself.
I can easily answer your question why after 8 years of repub rule we are not in a f@scist state: The Constitution. America remains a rule of law much to the consternation of the far right xtians. Our founding fathers recognized the need for a separation of church and state. That recognition has prevented the far right from their druthers of transforming the country into a xtian f@scist state.”

Two different statements: "The Republican Party needs to be de-fundame ntalized."
Vs. "Religion needs to be de-fundame ntalized."
Religion consists of way more than fundamentalism and/or the Repub Party.”

Nice deadpan close to your post, seriously. But my comment was intended to counterpoint those who would throw the baby with the bathwater.
I suggest that if religions (namely the monotheistic ones that comprise the overwhelming majority of adherents globally) should focus first on combatting and ending all forms of virulent fundamentalism.
IOW, "First, do no harm."”
