“I moved to AZ from California in 1980 and found the state to be 15+ years behind in almost every way. You still have the mentality that they dont like strangers moving in, dont like people of different ethnicities, still think women are "girls"--hey, I have tried to help the state progress. ;->”

Commented Aug 26, 2009 at 17:04:41 in Politics

“too liberal? how many wrongful death lawsuits settled so far because of the conditions in Joe's jails? Do you think that your life should be at risk if you are jailed for a minor offense?

We could stop overloading prisons by changing some laws; we have more people in prison per capita than any other industrialized country. That means one of two things, we are a nation of criminals, more so than other countries; or our system needs reform.

I for one would like to see every person arrested for simple posession of marijuana freed immediately.”

Eyckie replied on Aug 26, 2009 at 17:32:28

“It's a business but it should be government run, period. This is big business for guys like
Cheney and they charge big bucks, so it's in their best interests to keep the prisons full even for minor offenses.”

All for Good: A New "Craigslist for Service"

Commented Jun 12, 2009 at 19:44:00 in Living

“funny, I am a liberal and so are my friends: They spend an evening a week dishing out food at a homeless shelter, giving blood on a weekly basis, volunteering at the food bank, serving as big brothers and big sisters, driving elderly and disabled to doctor appointments.....during Katrina I provided pro bono resume and job finding help to people who had been displaced. In fact, I make it a point to provide some pro bono career services each year. I volunteer as a speaker on job search, careers, interviewing at job centers, churches, alumni groups....gee, it ony takes about 20 hours of my time to prepare each presentation, then the time to drive to the place and give the presentation.

My late husband spent nine years coaching kids in soccer and little league, and for the ones who had challenging home situations, bought them meals, picked them up and took them home when their parents had to work or just did not care.

I dont know who you are hanging out with, maybe people who write checks to get the tax write off?”

radicalcapitalist replied on Jun 13, 2009 at 08:12:06

“READ! Or, learn to read...

The last two Democratic Party nominees for President have come up short on the charity scale. Al Gore has been famously stingy when it comes to actually giving his own money to charities. In 1998 he was embarrassed when his tax returns revealed that he gave just $353 to charity.

Gore’s office initially defended the action, claiming that the Gores had often given “food and clothing to the homeless.” But when no one showed up in cast-off clothes, Gore’s spokesman Chris Lehane offered a typical “friend of Goodness” response saying that you could only “truly judge a person’s commitment to helping others” you needed to see “what they have done with their lives.” In other words, politics was charity work.

Senator John Kerry likewise has a poor record. In 1995 he gave zero to charity, but did spend $500,000 to buy a half stake in a seventeenth century painting. In 1993, he gave $175 to the needy. Later, of course, Kerry married the rich widow Theresa Heinz, and today is active in charitable causes using the Heinz foundation as his vehicle.

So why do YOU think someone like me is discriminated against? Just because they can. And they can because of lax laws.”
