60+ House Democrats Say "Any" Health Bill With No Public Option Is "Unacceptable"

Improving the Health Care Bill After It Passes Will Not Be Easy

Commented Dec 23, 2009 at 12:49:42 in Politics

“I agree with you. And you're right, if they pass this and don't improve it pretty darn quickly the Dems will be ousted from power in the mid-term election, not because the repubs are any better than them (bleh), but because their supporters will be so disheartened and betrayed.”

Improving the Health Care Bill After It Passes Will Not Be Easy

“And who exactly is going to be around to amend it? By passing this piece-of-you-know-what bill the Dems in Congress are issuing their own pink slips and handing the 2010 elections to the repubs on a platter.

What a bunch of...”

samonet az replied on Dec 23, 2009 at 04:26:51

“Oh, ye of little faith!

The Dem leadership knows what it is doing. I will bet you that, as soon as the bill becomes law, we will see a public option amendment move pretty quickly through the legislative process. Keep in mind, the budget reconciliation process only requires 50 plus 1 yea votes to pass any bill in the senate. A public option amendment QUALIFIES for this process because it is a cost-cutting measure. It would be filibuster-proof.

Liberals need to understand that no one bill will solve the health care problem. As it was with Social Security, the initial bill represents a minimalist beginning to a years-long process. Liberals would do well to understand and stay engaged with that process, not just give up when they don't see change overnight.

I challenge all progressives not to give up! Liberals are notorious for not showing up at the polls in off-year elections because they despair too easily when they don't see the change they voted for in the previous election cycle. This empowers the right wing. We need more patience as a voting block.”

I've been a registered commenter here since March of 2006. Click on my user name and go look at my comments from this time last year or last summer. You know what you'll see? Someone who threw themselves behind Obama wholeheartedly, who worked hard to get him elected and gave 'til it hurt and kept his signs up in the windows even after our house was vandalized. Now follow my comments through this last year and you know what you'll see? Hope fading. And then hope dying.”

Are Progressives Just Whiners? Saving Lives Is What Matters

Commented Dec 20, 2009 at 00:28:26 in Politics

“I hate to break it to you, but progressives are already ignored by the powers that be.

And the only way we won't continue to be ignored is if we stop threatening to take our votes and go home and actually do it.

As to the current bill, I agree with Howard Dean:

"In an interview with Salon late Thursday, however, Dean insisted that he would support a version of the current legislation, with certain changes, and that he had "never said" he would only back a bill that included a public option. "We're not going to get reform," he said, meaning what he regards as true reform, which would have to include a public option or an expansion of Medicare. "The question is, can we get a bill that does some good instead of more harm than good. And in order to do that, the protectionist legislation for the insurance companies that is in there now needs to be stripped out entirely."

What irks him the most in the current bill, he said, is that it permits insurance companies to charge as much as 300 percent more to some customers than others. So even though they must provide coverage to anyone who applies -- known as "guaranteed issue" -- the price differential that can be charged to older or sicker customers virtually erases that promise. "If you have to pay $20,000 a year for insurance, what good does it do if you have guaranteed issue?" he asked rhetorically."”

SonofLiberty1 replied on Dec 20, 2009 at 01:44:27

“At 53 today, I've already decided that until something really gets better I will NOT go to another hospital period! I've already had that fight with the hospital and insurance company about "pre existing condition" and trying to make me pay for their mistake.”

hp blogger Linda R. Monk, J.D. replied on Dec 20, 2009 at 01:00:58

“Dean is right that the price of coverage is really an access issue; folks won't be able to afford such expensive policies even if they are technically available. So what kind of coverage is that? Still none. I know the amendments will start as soon as the bill is passed, and I can live with that if it in fact saves lives. Even if we can save only half (for now) of those 45,000 lives, it's worth the doing.

And we'll keep doing, until the next reform bill passes, and the next, and the next.”

“In fact, I'd like to tell you exactly how stupid I was.

My spouse and I live in a small town in Utah. We put an Obama sign in our yard and it was stolen. We put out another and would take it in at night, but it was stolen too. We then put it inside the window and had rocks thrown at our window. They broke part of the vinyl and scratched the windows. We still left it there. We then had eggs thrown at our house - our stucco house. A whole lot of them. It took us an entire day to scrub the mess off, but we still kept the sign up.

That's how much I believed in his message of change and hopefor the people of this country. That's how stupid I was.

But I will never be that stupid again.”
