There are several methods for tracing firearms. One of the simplest is to ask the criminal where they got the firearm. In such a case it can reasonably be assumed that criminals would over report getting them from gun shows instead of ratting out a friend. And yet, the DoJ's numbers are that less than 2% of firearms used in crime came from gun shows.

And even if documentation existed a la FFLs, since the documentation is maintained by each seller for that particular sale, it does not make it much easier to tell who has what.”

Monitoring of home sales or auto sales comes in filling out all the forms required. The government cannot stop me from selling my home or auto, but you advocate just that with respect to my guns. Big difference!!

And if the government does not monitor your emails, phone calls and internet surfing, how can the government stop terrorists from plotting or pedophiles from lurking, etc? We are a free society and individual freedom comes with risks to individuals. If you want to eliminate every possible risk, then you will have to surrender your freedoms, and even then you won't be safe from the leviathan you've created to protect you. If you or the Brady Campaign really gave two squirts about safety instead of control (guns are just the straw man), then you would advocate for making these wonderful Brady Background checks available to the general public. Instead, you want to eliminate private sales driving all sales to FFLs that will perform the FFLs so you can then focus all your attention on turning the screws on them to reduce their numbers drastically just like you did in the 90s. Just admit that you don't really care about guns, but you are afraid of people and want everyone else monitored and controlled constantly for your safety. Either that or you like Helmke enjoy the power trip of controlling others lives.”
