“I keep thinking of the soldiers -- our young men and women doing the best they can, and doing what they're told. Part of that is because I have a brother who is in the Navy -- served in Iraq and I believe is trying to go to Afghanistan, too -- he's in his 50s, so he definitely is not tops on the list of people to send!) So I have enormous respect for those who serve. I don't want their sacrifices to be dismissed, or to be in vain if we just give up. It's really kind of a mess. My husband has been reading a book written by a Ranger legend, Col. Raph Puckett (wonder if he's any relation to Gary Puckett?!) called Words for Warriors, about what Puckett has learned in 50-plus years of being a solder. I've picked it up and read some of the essays in it (and actually all kinds of leaders in every field -- not just the military -- would find it valuable) and you really learn a lot about life in the military. I have renewed respect for our military men and women. (Anyone else wants to take a look, see http://www.ralphpuckett.com or www.ralphpuckett.com).”

“This i a great idea. The health care bill is horribly flawed, and postponing it could end up saving Obama's bacon. Much better to scrap it and start over. “Such a Republican viewpoint! Do nothing now or in the future will much of the nation hurts and is going into medical bankruptcy. Just sitting down to address "jobs" can't get down by focusing on it only. If you have ever been responsible in a business framework you would appreciate the necessity to do many things at one time. What is needed is a holistic vision of how the parts will all fit together. Something not evident in Republican thinking which is just concerned with tax cuts and deregulation. The Bush years showed how flawed this policy was. With tax cuts and deregulation was just focusing on the "economy". Not such a good plan as viewed today.”

“You're right "let's scrap healthcare for all Americans" so Republicans can lie and frighten more people. In 2010 the Dems will no longer have the 60 Senators. History tells us the Party in power loses in mid term elections. So....once Republicans gain a few more representatives there will be more of them to say "NO". Because that's all they can do besides give "tax cuts to the wealthy".”

“What's funny is that, come Dec. 10, at the Nobel Prize ceremonies, Obama will have to make another low bow, all orchestrated to music! At least, that's how I read it from a book -- about the Nobel Prize, not about Obama -- called "Reindeer with King Gustaf." http://www.anitalaughlin.nett or www.anitalaughlin.net) It's written by the spouse of a winner and follows the two months after the fateful phone call as the "academic" household morphs into "let's get ready to go to Stockholm," with measuring for clothing, Nobel lecture prep and a trip to the white House for a formal reception. (Hmmmm, I bet Obama can skip that step!) Anyway, interestingly enough, the bow is mentioned in the book -- I immediately thought of Obama and the bow in Japan, of course. "The proper Nobel bow takes some practice, as one must bow low, pause, and then bow twice again while holding a large leather-bound watercolor and diploma. As the bows were always timed to music, mercilessly critiqued by the press and watched by millions of people it was important to get it right.."

It's a country full of religious zealots who feel they're the ones to dictate to the majority what dogma of their beliefs everyone should adhere to. Being spiritual is much more civil than being religious. Who cares that religion infected politics before, or even now. It has sicken debate on getting things done in this country, and has only benefitted those who want a platform to spew their beliefs. And, too, remember what happened under Clinton. He got rid of the deficit. When the economy picked up, all of that money flowed right back into the treasury.
I submit that that is what Obama will do once we have a handle on this incredibly wasteful industry that is commanded by corporations whose idea of "trickle down" (helping the little guy) is giving huge bonuses to their CEOs instead of making certain that everyone has health insurance.”

“Probably because it wasn't both hilarious and frighteningly possible at the same time. The Obama sketch was satire. Palin 2012 was more of a warning. I firmly believe that satire as we know it is dead. We can't exaggerate the current world enough to make it satire. We can only present what is really happening with a firm eyebrow raised. If you think about it, that is exactly what The Daily Show and Colbert Report do. SNL has been leaning that way since Tina Fey's Palin sketches used so much of Palin's own words to skewer.”

“How about a lack of respect for the idiots who put it in the bill?”

“Until your children, or your nieces/nephews can't get jobs, can't get anything, b/c of the horrific national debt and this albatross of a bill that drags down the economy.”

“The reason they won't get jobs has little to do with the national debt and much to do with the national greed that in our country...and only our country...CEO's demand salaries 400 times that of the average worker and stock holders demand high quarterly profits. In order for both to happen, they have to move their jobs to third world companies where they can pay 1/ 15 th the salary paid to American workers. or even use prison workers. I do believe all who spout the glen Beck talking points should at least do some fact checks first,.”

“You missed my sarcasm, Mr. Preachy, but, now that you mention it.... What do you think your kids were paying for two wars of chocie and the give-away of the nations treasury? The world is still waitng for a play-by-play of what the Repulbicans would have done (since October of 2008) with two markets in freefall to reverse what is being quaintly called a recession. Please wow me with your big ideas for how the GOP would've reversed the state of things as Bush left them.

“I'm not sure why people would be surprised by this. Look at the glitch with the airline system yesterday. Your phones go out, electricity goes out. Our credit card has been replaced at least 3 times over the past 3 or 4 years not because of anything we've done -- but because some sort of "security" system has been breached. (And it's a pain in the neck, too.) I am reminded, with this emphasis on technology, of the book "Time To Care," by a doctor who practiced for 50, 60 years. www.normanmakous.comm) He says, that in all that time, technology (though very miraculous) has also become more important than the interpersonal relationship between doctor and patient, to the detriment of the system. You need to have a supervising personal physician, who knows about you, your health history, etc. Instead, there's more reliance on technology, instead of providing personal care. And with this whole health care debate going on, the book also has insights into today's health system that are from an "in the trenches" kind of point of view -- and that's not available from politicians, or economists, or academics.”
