“This is a fascinating article. The anonymity of Richard is sensible and doesn't detract from Pasha's intent of expressing the view of this tragedy through thoughts of someone much closer to a collective of realities. It is far more intellectually relevant than anything coming from the extremist's rantings, knee-jerking alleged journalists and opportunistic political operatives, who are busy trying to profit from this massacre.

No Difference Between President Obama and Candidate Obama

Commented Nov 03, 2009 at 17:08:40 in Politics

“Laudable that HuffPo picked your comment, however, despite the hit and run limitations of this venue, I would like to offer a word about ANYONE speaking with GENERAL sweeping statements about a group they subscribe. I am a Progressive and I don't agree with your contention. My contemporaries consist of people in business, education and government - all very involved and we, as a demographic are often stymied of how one gets from one point in a completely dysfunctional system to a better point.

While I'm sure we agree philosophically on the major points - I fear we are not seeing the same thing right now. One point I do agree - I'm not happy. But not in the Arianna - "let's be provocative for the sake of being provocative" way - I'm not happy with the fact that team(s) I seem to be associated with, have great experience in platitudes, not unlike the opposition. There are serious tactics at play and a complimentary strategy that includes publicly throwing stink bombs instead of impassioned pleas with detailed rationale is selfish and amateurish at best.

“What a terrific article. A blast in a time machine to a point when physician's weren't constrained by commercial associations to hawk a particular drug or medical services company. When doctors didn't work on commission - and were actually gratified to prevent illness instead of pitching for pharmaceutical companies that have lost their way.

HHS Investigates Medicare Providers' Massive Misinformation Campaign

Commented Sep 21, 2009 at 20:08:20 in Politics

“Wouldn't it be wonderful if insurers had to actually pass efficacy standards for the insurance and information they provided. Medicare providers are simply legal money lenders that are profiting from distributing government health care.

Imagine - an insurer starts misinforming insureds and gets suspended pending an investigation.

Now you know why there are so many millions of dollars being forked over to lobbyists to stop Congress from normalizing this relationship and ending the larceny currently enjoyed by ALL the participating companies.

They're crying foul because in their minds - this protection should have come with the purchase of their particular lawmakers. :)

We talked today about the other scam - Info-tainers posing as journalists.

“Excuse me ... this was your idea of a meaningful article?

What was your reason for writing it? To express that you don't understand? To influence others to hiss?

We're in the biggest social, economic and moral revolution our nation has seen in close to century and this is how you opted to use your blog real estate. Well when you're done including it in your resume - and showing all your pals - many of us are going to use this very article as a an example of what is killing the print media - people with nothing to say but tons of words in use not saying it.

Nothing personal - but what is your point ??

“And you have a better idea? I've signed petitions, I've written letters. I've posted opinions, I've flaunted bumper stickers, and I've voted. But I haven't seen that my actions amount to positive change.
My conversations with friends who have differing opinions only resulted in fewer friends.
A person believes the news source he/she listens to. Thing is, we listen to different sources, and the editors of those news sources want to amplify our differences. We're constantly fighting each other over trivia. While we're distracted, they pull off the big con.
The root of the problem is, too much power is concentrated into too few hands. Until we can resolve that, nothing else will get better. And until that day, I think public humiliation is a fine tactic for those unlucky enough to be in the same room with a war criminal.

“Your comments were the perfect balance to Belkin's article. Belkin cavalierly points to exceptional tools available to the President without even considering the consequences to the big picture. He also completely denegrates Choi. Lt. Choi's decision to 'come out' on National television wasn't about him - it was about something much larger than himself. It was about moving public opinion and a selfless move that carries its own burdens. Not to mention the fact that we're going to be digging our way out of hundreds of executive military orders that did precisely that - ruled by exception - circumventing law and compromising regulations for "special circumstances". To promote more of that as an option - is breath taking inanity.

It is so disappointing that someone with this highly visible venue would waste this blog real-estate - suggesting that Choi was looking for special treatment when his entire move is to change the broader rules and raise public awareness. Hasn't he even listened to Choi speak??

Thank you JL for providing Belkin's missed opportunity with some fact, reason, context, maturity and experience.

Respectfully,

“Your reply expressed the formula in a cogent, concise nutshell. As I read over many other replies, it is easy to see that the 'hate' has taken root on the side where there was none. This is a most unfortunate consequence of battle. What will make great changes is if the fighting becomes an argument and ultimately a conversation. There is no reasoned discourse at the volume of a shouting match.

Right now, there are a lot of people shouting and banging their fists perhaps because they don't believe that people can learn the very thing they insist they learn? That people can't change ? That there is no victory unless the other side is dead ?

I believe your reply may have most clearly pointed out the difference in perspective between critiquing an historical event and making history. Audacious, indeed.

“I don't see too much hate. I see a lot of anger. There's a big difference. I'm not sure why people fear anger -- it is the single greatest motivator for change. Am I angry? Angrier than I have ever been (or at least as much as when Bill Clinton signed DOMA, while his wife was at home and his intern was under the desk). I amg etting ACTIVE.

But I don't hate Obama. I don't hate Warren. I do regret allowing Obama to motivate me to hope -- because hope is such a fragile thing to me, after the last 8 (heck, 16!) years. And so I'm angry at him.

Warren doesn't even REGISTER. The CHOICE of Warren registers loudly and clearly. And I am angry.”

Delightful - shear delight. Many of us are getting tired of watching the Liberals who were fighting for the same cause, splinter into self-aggrandizing roles as the New Age pundits, rushing through the door to bring their hubris and announce their personal preferences of how to run our lives and control our thoughts by doing things like attack Caroline Kennedy without a scintilla of information in the public indictment, other than their whim.

I refuse to buy into this counter-intellectual re-purposing of ideological strongholds just because someone had some creds for taking a break from fiction hit a bases clearing home run. I know guy that doesn't golf that had a hole-in-one the very first day he golfed ... yet he still can't break 100 thirty years later, never won a match or even own a set of clubs. What's Missing From Obama's Infrastructure Plan

What's Missing From Obama's Infrastructure Plan

Commented Dec 14, 2008 at 13:07:45 in Politics

“Harry:

While it would be difficult to argue with your observations, in general, it seems to me that your voice is an important one but your leadership might be what's actually needed.

That being said, with all your talent, isn't it time you approached the future Obama administration with a plan - a request - and invitation to articulate an understanding of the devastation in New Orleans. This tragedy is now sharing the short attention spans of Americans with self liquidating politicians and a world financial crisis, that without scientific analysis, touches all of us with few degrees of separation.

Undoubtedly, sarcasm is a fine tool - satire, it's cousin, a wonderful way to intellectually guffaw at our mistakes - but an uncomplicated appeal to include re-building lives in New Orleans with a major national reconstruction effort might not be glamorous, or singularly rewarding - but it sure would be a way to focus some of that talent - instead of sharing the sounding board of opposition and sarcasm that is predominant home of the very people that presided over the disaster and graft riddling alleged reconstruction.

Team building requires the creative energy you possess that has made you very popular both artistically and philosophically among many of us. Perhaps it's time for you to move from theoretical magic to practical magic and challenge the power to create rather than chiffinade words that have yet to be spoken.

Most respectfully

A 'Terrible' Debate Performance By Brokaw and Organizers

A 'Terrible' Debate Performance By Brokaw and Organizers

Commented Oct 08, 2008 at 11:40:42 in Politics

“I noticed what you are referring to - although I wasn't able to discern what the 'cutting' gesture actually was - and from the camera angle, it was difficult to discern if McCain was looking at Brokaw or a stage director. After not seeing any other reaction - I was less alarmed and considered that the communication was not with Brokaw but with a stage director about his microphones. Live observers at the debate, just feet away, raised no question about it so I'm comfortable.

Additionally I find this conversation about Brokaw, at the very least, ridiculous. It doesn't matter whether he personally favors McCain, he did what he was supposed to do. The debate committee agreement did not permit for moderator follow-ups.

Did anyone expect anything more ?? That would be hard to believe.

It was a study in temperament and intellect; logic and communication skills; and, leadership skill and critical thinking. This is not about debating a subject pro and con. These are auditions. Nothing more ... nothing less. It's merely about exposure to the candidates style.

That being said - it becomes even more clear that Obama's refusal to bite on the "McCain road show of Town-Halls' was a strategic win. He refused to become commoditized as McCain has done to himself. There is nothing (other than a gaffe) that McCain can say that doesn't appear to be at least 4 years old.

“"... I did two tours there ..." ????

This is how the deluded misinformation moves from fiction to fact. It is very possible, if one isn't familiar with 68 year old actor's career - that he was inferring that he did two tours-of-duty as opposed to two USO tours.

It seems to me that even considering Norris' great military service as an Air Force Security Policeman, and his distinguished service as an enlisted man - his military expertise may not have been enough to discern the fact that no military service person in a war zone is unskilled enough to tell a movie star on USO Tour that he doesn't agree with his orders. Not only would that be highly risky, it would be a violation of the UCMJ and likely land the troop in deep poop.

So Norris is probably telling the truth when he says no military said to him - "let's get out of here" - but that doesn't reconcile the fact that he is now in contention for an 8th Degree Black Belt in being a dolt.

It's against their years of training to be calm and composed when facing adversity. He may have an 8th degree black belt but he behaves like someone who just got his orange belt (2nd or 3rd belt). I have no respect for him after seeing this. You can see this when these folks spare. The lower belt guys are more dangerous because they have little control over their bodies and minds. Then you watch black belts spare and you see centered-ness and calm. It's true they sometimes get angry but that's far and few between.”

“Buteven inthe selection of 'color-people', that is to say, the assortment of ethnically diversepeople that are selected to supply color commentary - there is a huge casting debacle across the networks that waspurposely done to represent a super-diversity that in itself is just window dressing.

Howcan AmyHolmes be praising the insight of JohnMcCain a man who voted against MLK day each time or his recent objections tothenew GIBill? It is unconscionable that this bright younglady is anything but an anomaly. It's verymuchlike that Norwegian Sushi Chef. It's not typical.

So the castingcall wentout tofill allthe BradyBunch boxes, but theconversation and thecoverage is nauseating. Since that day - Matthews seems to have told the NBCilluninati to pound it.

The CNNshowsare verymuch like a terrarium .. theyhave theirown cycle of proposed situations and proposed guesses as how the proposed nominees would propose a solution. Diverse, indeed if you are talking about fashion statements - diverse representing America - not even remotely.

FOXNews which isn't evenremotely a newssource - hoists the dyspepsia of Hume- Krystoll as the colors of their Flagship. “It doesn't seem very likely that a Republican will be selected by Obama, although I'm not willing to place bets against it, because everything about this current year's election drama has been unlike any in history ... so why not more untraditional options? If anyone could pull off selling the rationale it would be Obama He's proved to be unafraid to buck certain party orthodoxy. . It would also forever, change the complexion of our 2 tenured party system and further short circuit the unbridled seated power of the street machinery of both parties - opening the door for additional meaningful political forces.

A Hagel selection would not only put a very tough voice on the front lines of the election battle and serve to dwarf McCain's military claims - but it would also create a huge obstacle for the Bush White House to further grab Constitutionally questionable Executive power.

There are many good reasons for a Hagel pick - however, the Obama Democrats are not necessarily representative of the traditional Democratic party. In fact, it seems that the Clinton Dinosaur Democratic machine is fighting for their dear lives because of losing the control of patronage which is where the Democratic party performs it's most despicable operations. It seems very plausible that the old hardcore Democratic leadership would easily prefer to lose an election than loosen their grip on the money machine they built.

Context is everything when quoting anything or anyone.

The 'Car Talk' tangent was even more bizarre - that was taking the McCain bait and swallowing by accepting the framing that McCain put on Obama's quote as though it were an element of his campaign strategy - instead of an answer - and a highly engaged informed answer at that - to a young supporter's question.

Thanks again - I may even read a little more now that you've put a breath of sanity in here.

By the way - the real news worthy quote from Obama is when he indicated that the McCain campaign and his supporters seem to be proud of their ignorance. This is a slam that the corporate news will let drop because it reflects more of what the Nation actually feels and would be counterproductive to their concerted effort to make this look like a close race with carefully farmed polls and the actors reading scripts while posing as political analysts.
