“Apparently all the posts will now be published on Facebook. I suppose it's an effort to make the dialogue less intense and in your face as it often is, but frankly, that's one of the things I like about it. I don't think Facebook is the place for political discussion but it's not up to me. I prefer to have conversations about politics with people who are well informed and smart and so many on HP are (excluding the trolls, of course). I clicked the link above but got a blank screen.”

“So Sanjac, are you planning on going to Sonic or Chili's with your firearm displayed? If so, why? They are private businesses and have the right to ensure that everyone feels comfortable and safe. Many do not when they see people with weapons dangling from their waists. It's just smart business.”

“You don't understand how brands operate. They don't want to be overbearing but they do want their establishments to be comfortable, safe environments that families expect. It's likely all the gun zealots will boycott anyway so they don't need to worry about people challenging this much. I plan to visit both Sonic and Chili's and show them that my family appreciates this action.”

“Gun ownership does not translate to being in favor of keeping the status quo. You might be surprised to learn that my husband and I own guns (two pistols and my Dad's shotgun). However, we are typical of most gun owners in wanting more sensible gun control Who doesn't support gun responsibility? That's fundamental. But we need to stop the proliferation of military style weapons of mass destruction. We will never cure some people of wanting to harm others but we can make it difficult for them to commit mass murder. It's plain common sense. If you've studied the issue so carefully, please tell us how our murder and mass murder rate compares to other industrial nations and then discuss their gun legislation. You are on the losing side on this one. If we can save one school kid's life we are doing the right thing.”

“Plus, they have done a lot of customer research on this. As we know, the majority of Americans are in favor of sensible gun reform. I used to work in brand development and we looked at every aspect of customer satisfaction. Just a few complaints about a dirty bathroom or rude employee is noted and acted upon with strong successful brands. This is not a political decision, it is a pragmatic business decision. And yes, the potential liability is also a strong motivator as well.”

They are making a smart business decision based on careful customer research and feedback. Believe it or not, the majority of Americans want sensible gun ownership reform. Sonic and Chili's are onto that. Why aren't you?”

“Get used to it. You are in a shrinking minority. You live in a bubble created by the NRA that makes you believe that the government is your enemy and is coming after your firearms. They're not but this is what's going down, Bucko. Most of us are grossed out by the gun culture. We have kids and grand kids and do not want to take them to places where dudes are flaunting weapons. Sonic and Chili's are not exactly bastions of liberal culture and I'm sure they researched their customers' attitudes carefully before taking this action. Get used to it. The Wild West is closing down (actually it closed down in the late 19th Century but the NRA was successful in making it seem that it was still alive to some gullible people).”

“Only in the minds of the uninformed is there the belief that gun owners are in a shrinking minority. The number of gun owners in this country has been steadily increasing. There are more than 80 million gun owners in the country.

MOST of the country is not "grossed out" by the gun culture. In fact, the gun culture exists for more than 60% of the country and it's growing. Gun Safety and gun responsibility. Things that used to be mainstays in school until the 1970s.

BTW, did you know that prior to 1970, there were only 2 school shootings and that since 1970 there have been over 150?

I have news for you, Teaching gun safety and gun responsibility will do more to reduce the "gun violence" in this country than any law passed that doesn't violate the 2nd Amendment.

And that is from someone who has actually studied the issue, which is more than most of the people commenting can say.”

Join us in the 21st Century. I hope every business in America takes this stance and then all the open carry laws will be blunted. You can be just as masculine (actually a lot more so to most of us) when you're not bristling with firearms.”

“Looking at failures helps us to avoid repeating them. It would therefore be profitable to compare the Tulsa and St. Louis experiences and determine what the differences are. Magnet schools in Austin, the city I lived in most recently, were almost continually under attack because they were too white and elitist.”

“The best answer is to foster great magnet schools. In Tulsa where I live now, there are excellent magnet schools that are the most desirable schools in the county and attract the best students from all over town. Two of them are in North Tulsa, the traditionally black part of town (a product of the infamous 1921 Greenwood Race Riot). Also support early childhood development. Again Tulsa (believe it or not) is leading the way in this arena via the highly succesful Kaiser Foundation Early Childhood Development program. Contrary to your assertion, most liberals are finding something RIGHT with activism and smart social programs as we always have.”

bk0906 on May 17, 2014 at 19:20:14

“Of course, it might be profitable to look at the St. Louis schools, where sumptuous court-ordered magnet schools failed to draw white students and have deteriorated into hellholes.”

“And many are too strapped, disadvantaged and desperate to be able to parent well as they struggle to survive. The continual decline of the poorest among us will continue to prey on the overall health of our society. Raise people up via early childhood development programs which have been proven to make a huge difference. Raise the minimum wage. Increase job training programs. Personal responsibility is vital but is impossible when you don't even feel like a person in the first place.”

“I humbly disagree. Being poor is not an excuse for parents not to become involved in their children's lives. Even a single parent working two jobs and having to leave his/her children with a neighbor or relative can take the time to have that caregiver make sure the child does his homework. Also it doesn't take money to teach a child manners, a good work ethic, respect for ones elders/teachers etc.
The original complaint with Brown v. BOE seems to have been that it wasn't fair to bus a child to a school an hour away when there was a school in the neighborhood. So now, thanks to the government, we have kids being bussed 1, 2, even 3 hours to schools when there are schools much closer. It's not the schools that need to be integrated, it's the neighborhoods.”

“Wow, I agree. First of all, even if you suspect someone of taping this deliberately, how could he/she have anticipated what the dog was going to do thus catching it as it ran across the yard? And yes, our sympathy for animals is very laudable but the maiming of a child is frightful. I wonder how many people know that animal charities out-perform almost all others in contributions. You can show a picture of a starving child and get just so much. Show a picture of a starving dog and you will be overwhelmed with contributions. My company ran a charitable promotion in which we invited charities to post their stories and then asked people to vote on their favorite. We finally stopped including animal charities because they totally eclipsed all the others. We figured they were doing just fine already.”
