In Praise of the Working Artist

Commented Dec 03, 2009 at 14:17:09 in Los Angeles

“Hollywood is not the only place full of people "making stuff" and contributing to the cultural landscape. The whole world is full of these people. Those who live outside of LA or NYC are even further removed from the glamour sought by those who who travelled to the superstar meccas. They fill local galleries with interesting things. They play music at neighborhood parks in summer. They are out there in the midwest teaching our children to play the piano. They are in the southwest teaching Art in our schools. They are in the northwest creating eco-friendly public art.

They're everywhere, and they make a tremendous contribution (I would say an even more valuable contribution than, say, Brad Pitt) to our society.

Thanks for writing.”

Obama's Unavoidable Cure for the Afghanistan Cancer

Obama's Unavoidable Cure for the Afghanistan Cancer

Commented Dec 02, 2009 at 21:32:39 in World

“This is one of the most offensive knee-jerk comments that regularly come from the left. It infuriates me. It's an immature schoolyard style taunt that indicates a complete inability to rationally consider a problem.

Every working person in this country pays taxes that support our military. The people who enlist do so knowing that they are the instrument of the tax-paying citizens of this country. When something needs doing, the instrument gets used. Because citizens feel it is time to use the military does not mean that they themselves should become the military.

Paying so much for the military every month gives citizens the prerogative to at least have an opinion about whether or not it's time to use the military.”

Obama's Unavoidable Cure for the Afghanistan Cancer

Commented Dec 02, 2009 at 21:17:49 in World

“Wow, so refreshing to see some rational discussion about the real situation we are facing here.

I don't have an opinion about strategy because unlike most of us, I'm perfectly willing to admit that I just don't know enough. My opinion is that I voted for Obama because he is smart and pragmatic and spiritual, and I'm hoping that he uses those qualities in his job as president.

One thing most Americans have forgotten is that we dragged all of our allies into this mess. For 9 years, while we were farting around in Iraq, our allies have been trying to hold together OUR WAR in Afghanistan, trying to get the people who got us. Canada was not attacked on 9/11 by the people in Af-Pak, nor was Europe. But they're all there wondering when we're going to show up in the necessary way for our own war.

The threat of terror attack is not America's alone, but we are the lead target, and we have been hit the most frequently, and we should be there doing our part to solve this problem. There are, after all, nukes in the mix.”

Jesster replied on Dec 02, 2009 at 22:56:38

“Refreshing, to say the least, and like you, I make no pretense to knowing what should be done to resolve this nightmare.

You are also among the very very few who even seem to notice how many others we have implicated in our war - often while our leaders were acting in less than good faith.Thank you for reminding us.”

jeanrenoir replied on Dec 02, 2009 at 22:37:52

“Despite the blip of the bombing in Spain, the threat of a nuclear terror attack is, indeed, America's and Israel's alone. America is the only country on earth the terrorist's hate as much as Israel, because the terrorists know that with America propping it up all these decades, Israel would have collapsed years ago. Bin Laden is obviously a strategic genius, like Hitler until he insanely invaded Russia. Bin Laden knows that all he has to do is nuke New York, thereby imploding the American economy in one fell swoop, and America's capacity to support Israel and even to defend itself will be hugely compromised. Bin Laden would be no more concerned about America than he is about Norway if it weren't for Israel. If he can get those Pakistani nukes--and both America and Israel will be helpless to stop him if Afghanistan falls, and Islamic radicals take over Pakistan--both America and Israel will be toast, since there will be no way to stop Al Qaeda suicide agents from blowing up New York and Tel Aviv simultaneously. This is not 1968, when we could have simply pulled out of Vietnam with minimal consequences to us or the world. Boomers love to fantasize that it's that easy now, but it is NOT.”
Sarah Jessica Parker Has 'Enormous Regrets'

Sarah Jessica Parker Has 'Enormous Regrets'

Commented Dec 02, 2009 at 21:08:06 in Entertainment

“Sarah is by all accounts of those who work with her, a very kind and loving person. She didn't say she regrets her work, she regrets the way her schedule turned out around the time of the welcoming of two children into the family, when only one was expected.

Americans have to stop assuming that just because a woman seeks success she is somehow not a nice person. We don't make that assumption about successful men.”

sandys17 replied on Dec 03, 2009 at 09:37:48

“I agree with you. She signed a contract, and they schedule these movie projects several months ahead of when they begin filming. I doubt she can get out of some of her commitments if she wanted to. The fact is, she has regrets, but she is no different than many other working mothers out there. I work full time and am the major breadwinner in my family. We set out to adopt a child through foster care. We got selected for 2. And then guess what? I finally got pregnant. Will I regret having to work full time while raising 3 kids? Yes, but I will manage happily”

I'm sure Broderick is a doting dad, but it is the public perception that it is the woman's failing if kids have nannies, and the way women are trained to place full responsibility upon themselves that is the problem.”

“Oh, geez.

There is NO DEBATE about it, there just isn't. Ask any geneticist. Humans are genetically wired for many and multiple partners, not for monogamy. Sexual fidellity may be demanded in our present society, but it simply is not the way we're designed to behave.

Why are we so obsessed with beating down each and every person who falls back on their genetic predisposition?”

In my case, I waited to get married until I was in my mid-30's....an age where it was much easier to not be ruled by my hormones.

Tiger's transgression is not that he sought sex outside his marriage, it's that he lied to and betrayed his wife (apparently routinely).”

Afghanistan: Obama Drops The Other Shoe

Commented Dec 01, 2009 at 01:05:05 in Politics

“"How is Obama's decision to send more troops to Afghanistan contributing to his own personal political gain? If anything, it is damaging his support from the left, and nothing he does will gain him support from the right. You and I may believe he is making a mistake by sending in more troops, but you cannot know what is in his heart. He may be doing what he thinks is best under conditions he did not create, but must try to resolve. Any decision he could make regarding Afghanistan would have elicited outrage from one side or the other. I didn't serve in Vietnam, but my husband and my brother both did two tours each. They are career soldiers, who have served for 20 years each, and they are willing to give President Obama the benefit of the doubt."

Thank you, notstarvingartist, for your reasonable commentary.”

TN60 replied on Dec 01, 2009 at 05:39:59

“At least they (your husband and brother) have the right to voice an opinion. The rest of us, well, I will speak for myself, have no experience to judge this matter except to say, there were no good choices.

A lot of chicken-hawks always do the quarterbacking for these wars, and don't know a damn thing, unlike your family who should be given the thanks that were not given at the end of Vietnam.”

skialethia replied on Dec 01, 2009 at 03:37:05

“Although I believe you're sincere, you're wrong to give him the benefit of the doubt. He doesn't have to escalate, and he can progressively bring the troops home after they train the Afghan forces. We have no business being there. There are serious problems to take care of here, and although your husband and brother are soldiers, I regret to have to tell you, that they are pawns in a bigger game that won't ever benefit them. This country needs to pull away from depending on the defense industry to sustain it. Creating WMD's and technology destined to destroy lives is immoral, occupying other countries is immoral. Profiting from wars is immoral and using young men and women as pawns in war and filling their heads with lies so they can go off and k!ll in our name is tragic and unforgivable.”

allenosuno replied on Dec 01, 2009 at 01:19:16

“Meanshile, while you try to be reasonable toward Obama, the American people starve, go jobless, lack health care and have their sons and daughters sent to die in a quagmire. This situation doesn't call for phony reasonableness, it calls for clear headed opposition to an escalation that can accomplish NO good. I don't care what Obama believes, he is damaging the American economy (raising the deficit to crisis levels) with this war escalation and this will probably derail health care reform, Sorry. I disagree with you.”

India Comes To The White House, All At Once

Commented Nov 25, 2009 at 22:39:39 in World

“Some countries have different priorities, and having a few elite athletes winning gold medals becomes, for example, a lesser financial imperative than maintaining gym classes in high schools and encouraging widespread recreational athletic activity for the general public. In Canada, investment goes to public parks and walkways, cycling paths, public recreation facilities, community leagues, etc.

Some countries have lots of medals. Those same countries also have a hugely obese population, and lots of illnesses related to that.”
