2) comments that go, "Blah blah Palin blah blah."

I chose No. 1. No. 2 bores me.”

“This is not racist. It is merely, patently stupid. I don't want to limit the 1st amendment here -- it's like a bad political cartoon (with no humor). But I can't help wondering if this kind of stupidity breaks some sort of incitement law.”

goldbry replied on Nov 22, 2009 at 12:30:56

“It's racist. It's racist for its use of exaggerated African features, and for its implication that anything Arab equals "Jihad."”

Anthony Weiner Slammed By White House Official: He Should Have "Manned Up" In NY Mayor's Race

Commented Nov 04, 2009 at 13:30:48 in Politics

“"Man-up" is not a slam against women or gays. Unless you're the sort of person who thinks it's not okay to use like mankind or history anymore. I can see why some would get offended in this crazy society of ours, but really, it's not worth the fumes.”

Louisknyc replied on Nov 04, 2009 at 13:36:35

“What does "man up" mean exactly if it's not what AmericaBlog suggests. It's exactly what they say it is. It's an intended slight at a "man" who's not acting as we expect "men" to act...i.e. he's acting "unmanly" or "effeiminate".”

“I'm not impressed with your argument that it's worth picking a VP candidate based on the ability to draw a crowd. If the campaign were going on at present, and McCain were to pick a nut-case du juor like, say, Glenn Beck or a woman like Coulter (technically still a woman), he'd likely get great big crowds and contributions, too.

If you think either of those attention-getters are worthy of being a proverbial heartbeat away, then we've got nothing to talk about. Otherwise you'll see how those criteria are not valid for choosing a veep.”

“Mancoff, actually you characterize just 80% of republican voters. The other 20% are the ones at the top. They have their piles of money and are the true elitists who either don't care about anyone but themselves; or who actively support the dumbing-down of people who believe they can attain the American Dream if they can just get a pair of shoes and get some teeth put in their heads.

These are the people that surround me in Tennessee. Warning to others in the North: Don't move to Tennessee, especially if you have any kids -- the educational system is backwards and many Bible Belters pull strings of power, giving surreal credence to their notion that the Earth is 5,000 years old.”

“Don't worry, 957, at least not on my account! You uptighty righties are fun to have around, too! Poking fun at politicians is ALWAYS good sport, no matter the political party. (Except when it isn't...?) That said, "W" really was incredibly uninformed for a president, and that resulted in incredible incompetence. And worse.

So yeah, you could call me a Lib, although I don't see any difference in political parties except for the "culture wars" piece of the left and right. (I'm a "don't tread on me" kind of guy... as in >>> don't legislate personal choices like a woman's right to choose. And a man's right to harass, so long as there's equal pay and skills in the workplace!) I voted for Obama and still want to think he's going to do us all good despite the appearance that he's just continuing the generations-long tradition of giving too much of an ear to corporations and big-business lobbies.

But these times I think are breaking down the walls between "Libs" and conservatives. But if you are a conservative and know any "tea party" types, please help get the word out that they need to disown the more extreme (and even racist) nuts in their midst if we're ever going to repair the rift.”

“Aside from bashing Fox (too easy & boring), here's a thought on the CONTENT of the piece:

The conservatives have NO PROBLEM letting the federal government preempt state rules when it comes to cutting regulations on the environment or protecting the interests of business over consumers. But here they're claiming that the constitution doesn't allow federal preemption?

That's just illogical.”

Commented Oct 24, 2009 at 07:37:58 in Politics

“It's not widespread because Hersh evidently isn't a paid pundit of the kind you see on the news and/or cable talk shows. The anchors ould have to pick up a New Yorker to read Hersh.

Also the so-called "MSM" are timid to rock a boat they don't have the research to back-up. This piece would be seen as opinion because while the facts are there, the dots are connected by Hersh and not by some kind of internal memo that explicitly states "We are the Pentagon and we are racists who want to destroy Obama."

I have no idea what Avidbuff is talking about with his "integrated" comment. It seems to come out of left field.”

“On your No.1, you're hallucinating if you think a willingness to talk to people like Iran and every friggin' country surrounding Israel is capitulation... ever hear of the rope-apdope? Exactly. Give them a last chance to do the right thing before you pound them... the other shoe hasn't dropped yet.

On No. 2, you're delusional because the economy's been on a downward spiral since the Reagan years, and finally fella apart under Bush. Obama has continued the bailouts but let's give him a chance to see if his stimulus, etc., will work. He's doing a lot of things right now that deserve credit.

On No. 3, you sound like one of those climate change deniers. I've researched this stuff more than the average hick and we need to do something to preserve the planet for our children. It doesn't matter whether Mother Nature of Man caused global warming, it's real and we can mitigate it if we reduce our pollution. And hopefully our children will breathe more easily for our efforts today. We needed to sign Montreal and Kyoto, and didn't. We NEED to sign Copenhagen. It's not a global government - duh -- it's a global cooperation agreement on an issue to save my kids.”

“This story is incomplete. It hinges on a Cornucopia Institute quote that "...corporate agribusiness and major retailers have been accused of blurring the line between "natural" products and food that has been grown, processed and properly certified organic under tight federal standards." Let me help.

1) GIVE US THE EVIDENCE! Okay, Target, like others, have been ACCUSED of something. The story goes no further... where is a shred of support on either side? No follow-up is asked of Cornucopia or any qualified source. That would be a sin for a news reporter. Sadly, a blog like this lacks the staff or budget for "old fashioned" news journalism. Dang!

2) "TIGHT" STANDARDS" NEVER EXISTED: Cornucopia mentions "tight federal standards" that never existed. Years ago, organic growers -- the real entrepreneurs and innovators -- sought federal standards to keep Big Agrifood from watering-down the term. So rules were put up for comment, and Big Agrifood lobbyists drowned-out the organic farmers' standards before the rule was finalized. There's nothing tight about the resulting standard. The rule was made, leading organic producers were acquired and many of those who weren't bought (and sold) the farm. Michael Moore could have made this a compelling scene for "Capitalism - A Love Story." Farmers seek justice from the Feds, who let Big Money screw the little guys.

Personal disclaimer: I'm a writer with decades in the B2B world of food production, processing, marketing, fast-food and Washington chicanery.”

“If the product sold as Organic was certified by a USDA Certfiying Agency , it was Organic (as stated by OFPA). Likewise, if the product sold as organic WASN'T certified, it wasn't organic.

But that says nothing about the quality of the product or the methods used to produce it.

In fact, the article didn't even identify the product.”

Commented Oct 20, 2009 at 10:03:05 in Chicago

“From this story, I can't make any judgment at all, because all I know is that Grady was in a yelling match for three hours. The only wrongdoing I can get from this is that Grady gave a student reporter more time than necessary. And he has a loud voice.

I also get the feeling that the anger may be better directed at silly laws rather than Grady's conduct. (I mean, we all put up with Da Coach, Mike Ditka, and loved him when Da Bears won. So Grady's personal demeanor can't be an issue. Rather, we all hate it when cops are given the priority of issuing revenue-generating tickets (for snow shoveling?!) instead of fighting more serious crimes.

If that's the problem, it's time to change the law, or get Grady's boss to change his enforcement priorities. As an enforcer, Grady seems ethical and vigilant. All he needs is to chill-out and let his spokes-person do the talking more.

At least That's what I get from this story, as it's written.”
