Meaningful Agreement: Obama Says 'A First Step' Climate Deal Has Been Reached In Copenhagen
Commented Dec 18, 2009 at 22:11:12 in Green
“Even though Americans are not right wing zealots and the majority tends to be quite moderate the vociferous voices and money of the right have been able to make politicians fearful. An illusion of a right wing nation has been purchased in Washington DC, an illusion that has no true basis in reality.
Many of us progressive minded Americans saw in Obama a grand possibility to turn the country around and bring balance to the Nation's political dialog. However we miscalculated, Obama is not a liberal reformer but rather a rather conservative consensus builder.
It becomes obvious that the scare tactics of the extreme right who feared Obama as some sort of closet socialist are severely off the mark. But perception is reality and they have successfully managed to brand a center right politician as a left wing socialist.
The war, health care reform, transparency in government, Banking bail outs, etc. have shown Obama as the center right politician that he is. So, in order to truly bring about the change we want, we will have to work harder in order to usher in a new era. Though Obama is not the progressive we wanted, he is better choice that anyone on the other side. We will have to make ourselves felt strongly; we must reframe the political discourse in order to bring about a true balance away from the extreme right wing. The struggle will continue and steadfastness coupled with a firm strategy are vital to bring about change.”

“I couldn't agree with you more. One thing puzzles me however. Why does the right continue to insist that Obama is a socialist/ communist/ marxist etc. ? Clearly this is not the case. There is no evidence for this at all.
It is simply a question of ignorance, in that they really do not understand what these political systems represent ?”

“Well said, and i agree mostly except I think Obama is doing what he has to do given the dire circumstances. The war he said he would fight so thats nothing new nor do I understand how people thought he would exit soon, when in the campaign he called it a necessary war. Health care he's done a crap job, but its not his fault as much as it is the senate and its games. Polosi did her Job and got a good bill, yet the senate is tearing this health care thing apart. Who wants to be forced to buy insurance? sounds like a cop-out to the insurance companies to me. Our politicians need to stand up for whats right but thats not gonna happen, I hope all these republican bums get tossed out and these conservadems as well. The bailouts were started by bush but still continues without help to mainstreet thats my biggest critique. One thing to keep in mind though is its tough to do sweeping reform when the senate and house have to pass the bills and they have shown not to be completly united, they my friend are america's and Obama's biggest hurdle towards a center left country.”

“The most frustrating thing in this whole matter to me is the near complete lack of leadership given by our president. Obama is slowly but surely placing himself into the bin of one term presidents - his misunderstanding of the need and opinion of the American people is gigantic, he has left the health care reform as an orphan to be abused and destroyed by the insurance companies and their lackeys.
This will cost him his reelection and it will cost the Democratic party plenty in the midterm elections - why o why can't the democrats use their strengths and put up a fight? why do they cave in to mirages? it is truly sad to see this political party commit hara kiri while middle class America sees their dreams and hopes vanish into a third world country of great poor masses and a small privileged elite.”

“It is utterly frustrating to witness representatives from the right and left of the political spectrum as they criticize the abusive "bonuses" that the bankers are showering upon themselves courtesy of the American taxpayer while at the same time we hear deafening silence from the White House.
Obama should be leading the charge against this immoral and abusive practice, instead we hear nothing, not even a whisper from the leadership we elected to bring about the change we so desperately need. We might as well have elected McCain and the republicans, at least they are honest in their objective to fleece the middle class as they enrich themselves and their constituents.
Someone with access to Mr. Obama should shake him awake from the daze in which he seems to be wondering. We need strong vocal leadership that will renew the vaunted American values of justice, rewarded effort and fairness.”

“History repeats itself:
The US sees a problem and decides to resolve it militarily.
US invades foreign country and deposes “problem” ruler
US installs a leader who begins to loot the treasury and the aid received from the American taxpayer.
People of the country beg to be rid of the corrupt government.
US decides to back the corrupt leadership.
Opposition parties form a united front; front loses in corrupt elections stolen by the government
US continues to back corrupt leadership.
Opposition parties unite in armed struggle against the corrupt government.
Opposition to US policy is heard around the world and domestically.
Corrupt government continues to imprison torture and kill the opposition.
Worldwide and local anger towards the corrupt government is now directed at the US.
Armed resistance grows with popular and international support.
US sends in more troops to counter insurgents - local government continues to oppress the people and to loot the treasury.
Insurgency becomes overwhelming: corrupt leadership flees to Florida to spend retirement in wealth.
US gets kicked out because of massive resistance to the war at home.
Back in the US, the political party who supported the mess loses elections.
The new administration seeks to cure our self image of defeatism by invading some other country (Granada or Panama).
After the victory against a tiny weak nation, hawks in the US press the US to show military superiority by attacking a stronger nation.

“A war waged on foreign soil against the inhabitants of their land cannot be won unless all of them are uprooted and exiled to other faraway lands - this was plainly understood by many empires like the Incas and the Romans.
There is no possible way that the same strategy can be applied to the Afghan scenario. As the soviets finally understood by getting their butts kicked - you cannot win a war in a place like Afghanistan. There is no way to control the local population.
As in Viet Nam, the US is heading towards a smashing defeat unless we declare victory and get the hell out of there. Instead of spending money and resources in an attempt to control resources as in Iraq or political / social / religious / movements as in Afghanistan we should invest in new resources for energy and sane economic growth. While a vigilant and well armed fighting force is essential to maintain security, only the creation of wealth, jobs, education and a functioning social structure can produce peace and stability.”

“The disrespectful, hateful, slanderous manner in which the Republican leadership responds to Obama shows that the Right wing is prepared to say or do anything to destroy his presidency. We voted for him to represent our concerns, and to carry out his promises, not the right wing's. And as I've said before, the Republican party has no credibility and is unimportant to achieving the goals we Democrats support and thought Obama supported.
If Obama continues with this attitude of "looking forward" as far as not doing serious investigation into the antics of the Bush Administration on spying and torture, he will not get my vote again. It is quite evident some very wrong doing went on and the best way to see it never happens again is to pursue this. Maybe all people being tried for crimes should say let's move forward and not my past. Makes about as much sense. Obama was elected to uphold the law, and he clearly is not!”

“Is it him squandering the opportunity or the so-called progressive movement playing this like tone-deaf karoke singers? I have not seen the support of this so-called movement, but have seen it spend a lot of time in the last 6 months nit-picking, criticizing, and navel gazing. It seems to have taken what it was good at - criticism on the side-lines - and turned it into an art form. There is little action aside from petulant whining. No wonder he has to move more to middle - that is where the support is and where the action is. For all the progressive claims that he needs to march ahead and bull-doze the opposition, who is behind him, got his back? I mean, besides the usual progressive spectators, not sticking their necks out, on the sidelines, going "that's not it?"”

“How about quit giving your money to abusive insurance and "health for profit" merchants and get the care that we need without dumping millions of dollars into greedy pockets? oh no well that would not be right... specially if you worship ill gotten gains and the market god of money...”

“It is quite simple isn't it. Opponents of universal healthcare don't really give a good godda$mn if others die in a ditch!

“It is refreshing to finally see this administration getting the message from the great majority of our people - I hope to see many more ads like this one so that we can get the change we voted for.”

“What the Obama White House realizes is that only 53% of Americans cast a ballot for him in the first place, hardly a mandate, and his popularity is quickly reaching the point where people are no longer going to give him a free pass, just because he says so.
That has to be terribly frustrating to the White House and Mr. Obama.”
