Mental Illness: The Stigma of Silence
Commented Oct 21, 2009 at 17:04:06 in Living
“Bravo! This piece makes for powerful "sunshine" into an often misunderstood populace. We need a growing body of supportive information to educate all of us. My friends who have this condition vary widely in their struggles and successes. Truly, what helps them is the safety to be open and honest, and for others to accept them "as is." I'm learning all the time how to be a better friend because they had the courage to let me know how.”

“Mike Bloomfield! I had his Electric Flag album years ago, and one of his songs always pops into my mind during mind-numbing meetings: Slow Dance On A Killing Floor. Dave, a great column for a reunion of Grim Reaperees.”

“Oh, yeah, those IBM Selectric, 8-track cartridge, transistor radio, rotary dial days of yore. Twitter? I'm a technosaur who likes it best when it's done by birds. Hurling a paper airplane your way, Dave!”

“Hi BostonSMS,
Thanks for your great comment, your droll take on Twitter, and the reminder of all those devices that now seem ancient. I guess a non-electric typewriter was an early wireless device....
Best wishes, Dave”

“Disasters aren't just on the road. I left my passenger side door open and broke it and part of the wall backing out of my own garage. My husband said, "What happened?!" I said, "I was navigating the dangerous terrain of our driveway, a kind of Goomba Positioning System for non-Italians.”

“What you need is a Garage Positioning System.”

“It's come to this: will write for food. If we didn't laugh we'd be crying. But many columnists soldier on and if the June conference in Ventura, CA by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists is any indication, the brightest among us will know we must continue to improve and expand our craft. www.columnists.comm) I hear you'll be on the panel and a very welcome addition.”

“Loved this. More people should do volunteer work in prisons. It would be eye-opening. I taught a meditation/journaling program at Webster correctional Facility in CT. It remains one of the most moving, insightful experiences of my life.”

“Now that brought me holiday cheer. A letter that didn't list world-changing accomplishments that left me feeling like a knuckle-dragger whose big achievement was untangling Christmas lights. Thank you for that!”

“Who knew shoes would become such a science? Having such small feet (5 - that's the size, not the number of feet) I have a hard time finding sneakers. Everyone tells me to go to the kiddie section, but at age 54, I don't want to wear light up pink shoes with princesses on them. You don't have it that hard, Air Zezima.”

“Thanks for taking us with you to class. Recently I was at a conference dinner held at a restaurant and one of the attendees started choking. The quick-acting owner of the restaurant saved her life. Later the 32-year old owner said she had learned the Heimlich maneuver when she was 16 but had never used it until then.”

“You never know when it will come in handy. The CPR class was invaluable and I would recommend it to anyone. Now I can even save my own life.”

“Second-hand smoke I can understand, but the dangers of second-hand spit? As gross as I think chewing tobacco is, I am against micro-managing everyone's life. If there is worry about "setting an example for children" much bigger issues (violence and mindless consumerism, etc.) beg attention. The idea of kids being corrupted while sitting in the gallery is ludicrous. Somebody talk to baseball players!”

“Thanks BostonSMS, you're a real tea-in-Boston-Harbor thinker from the good old days when Americans refused to be pushed around. If they wanted to smoke, they smoked. If they wanted to spit, they spat, and there was no mindless consumerism -- you bought only what you couldn't grow or build.
Good points!”
Good points!”
