Glenn Beck: Stop the Insanity

Commented Sep 10, 2009 at 15:00:42 in Media

“Everyone, and I meane everyone above the age of 6 YOA, should see the movie Good Night and Good Luck. See it with a parent or grandparent who knows something about the McCarthy era. I was about 6-7 YOA when the hearings were on TV and though I was too young to understand all the implications, I sensed that there was something very wrong. Every right winger should see it and watch carefully how McCarthy demegogued himself in to a position of far too much power using fear and intimidation, ruining the lives of countles people who may have blurted out the wrong thing at the wrong time, who had the wrong friends/relatives who became involved in what they thought were idealistic causes. (The mother in Father Knows Best!) We are seeing deja vu all over again and it's sickening. Thank God Beck, etc. are not in positions of political power, but the powere they wield is bad enough, maybe worse since the have larger audiences. Michele Bachmann wanted an investigation into the Americanism of Americans, and Rep.Joe Wilson who calls the President a liar in front of millions with absolutely no grounds. We are in trouble, people. We'd better get it together. And , yes, I did attend one of those town hall meetings where the folks with swastikas signs and Obama+Hitler sign shouted down the people who were there to ask real question, get answers and execise their democratic, American, Constitutional rights. It's frightening”

“As you point out, this fear mongering has an old history in the US and we have survived it. We will survive this latest wave of demogogery too. What we need to be aware of are the powers behind the rant. How far are we ignoring what is really being done to our democracy by corporations, bankers and their politicians?”

China's "Green Dam" Overflows and Bursts

Commented Jul 01, 2009 at 15:30:12 in World

“Whatever the "real" reason for China backing down on the Green Dam project, it is very welcome.Of course they have to save face, but the outside world and the pressure of history on the move is certainly the biggest factor, in my estimation. And it is spreading, slowly but surely. There may be all kinds of motives, depending on where and whom you are talking about, but we have to make sur the trend continues, even in our own country, for a free and open internet..”

“HUH? I've got a nice bridge to sell you if you seriously believe that one, PR. I've told my story Re: Canadian healthcare a number of times here and it mainly involves the fact that my mother could have gotten the drug prescribed for her in Canada for virtually nothing, even as a forifner, had my parents moved there in tim. It was a drug costing nearly my parents' entire yearly income, not covered by Medicare or their supplement plan. My Dad had to fudge his income on paper to qualify for the drug company to give it to them for free/ Their combined income on Social Security and a small pension was about $25,000/year. The MINIMUM effective dose of this drug in the U.S. costs $24,000/year. He felt as though he was "cheating", but my Mom was dying. All the fussing around and delay meant my mother got the drug too late. I wish they had acted on their first instincts and gone to Canada. I had been in touch with pharmacists up there, one of whom had a doctor for them and offered to help with housing, red tape and the rest-no waiting in line and no going banKrupt by the whole family!”

“Gotta disagree with this one. Some close to me went to Annapolis, joined the Marines and finished helicopter flight training just in time for George Bush's war. After two deployments to Iraq flying as a captain in the Marines, she had had it with the war, came home (Thank God! A few buddies didn't) voted for Kerry, and Obama and at the first opportunity transferred to the Coast Guard with a loss of two rank and a cut in pay because she still wanted to fly and stay in the military, but do something more positive. She now heads up a civilian volunteer group who have their own boats and are trained and overseen by the Coast Guard in search and rescue. It's a huge job-she works outrageous hours that the local authorities could not possibly put in and do the rest of their jobs.”

“LOL, by all means let's keep the Coast Guard as a safe haven for your friends and relatives! Hell, just think, I could've switched from the USAF to the Coast Guard. It would have been fun! Instead, I retired after 24 years flying around the world in the AF, bought a 36 foot sailboat and sailed the Gulf Of Mexico for 5 years... I met a few happy go lucky Coast Guardsmen. What a life! I didn't live nearly as well as they did, but I almost had as much fun.”

Make Your Own Signature BBQ Sauce: A Taxonomy of America's Regional BBQ Sauces

Commented May 22, 2009 at 14:52:48 in Style

“The best BBQ I've ever had comes from a cookbook " Wide, Wide World of Texas Cooking". This is good on chicken, spareribs, short ribs, any good hunk of meat that will take long, slow patient cooking and frequent basting. It works on very meaty fish, too, with shorter cooking time of course. It's a 3 "sauce" BBQ starting with a dry rubbing spice mixture left on the meat for at least 30 minutes before cooking. That is followed by a mopping sauce that we changed a bit from the cookbook based on chicory blended coffee, applejack, butter and Worcestershire sauce with a few other simple seasonings. Remember, patience: long and slow cooking and lots of basting. That is followed by a dipping sauce based on applejack, chicken stock, vinegar, Tabasco, lemon juice, onions, garlic , Worcestershire, bottled chili sauce (The ketchuppy kin, not hot) and several dry spices and thickened with a bit of flour. It's ONLY for dipping, as it would burn as a mopping sauce. I think the best we ever had was a whole sucklig pig. Yum! Plenty of room for creativity: bourbon is as good as applejack (you don't have to get the most expensive stuff)
or use apple juice if you are a teetotaller. The key is the three steps and patience..”

“The best BBQ I've ever had comes from a cook book called the "Wide,Wide World of Texas Cooking" and actually uses three steps (for chicken, spare ribs and short ribs, and probably other things like solid meaty fishes or whatever). It starts with a dry mixture of seasonings rubbed in and allowed to sit for at least 30 minutes. That is followed by a moppin sauce based on coffee, the kind with chicory if possible, Worcestershire sauce and a few other things, and applejack. Some of this is a change from the cookbook and comes from experimentation. The original recipe calls for ketchup, no applejack and plain coffee not chicory blended. The final step is dipping sauce which we changed to include applejack and also has ketchup, chili sauce, onions, vinegar and a number of spices and seasoning and even a little flour for thickening, that would burn if you used it as a mopping sauce. This is strictly for dipping. There is a lot of room for creativity, but the three step BBQ is the key. The applejack really is terrific, for example, but use bourbon or something else. We've done it with bourbon,
too and you don't have to spend a fortune on the best available. Yum! Try pork shoulder or whatever you want to, but long, slow patient cooking and plenty of basting is best for meats. I've never done it on a whole pig, though I've done whole pigs, and I Imagine it would be fabulous.”

“Kate,
A few years ago I would have been shocked and disbelieving your story, but now I see, hear, read something similar everyday, quite often worse because most people have never had most of the resources you have had. Now, I am sorry to say that the greatest nation in the world cannot find its way clear to get someone in your relatively "good " situation back to a manageable life. Your stress and frustration level must be off the charts. I pray that your strength holds out!.
Last year "my" Democratic Representative running for Senator, had meetings he called "Idea Raises", to dicuss greatest concerns. Health care always seemed to dominate. The stories I heard were beyond belief. One young woman was denied affordable health insurance because she had sneezy allergies! A healthy 22 year old, no other medical problems, expected to pay over $1000/month for health insurance, for a bad case of hay fever! I am infuriated by the shortsightedness of society and certain Democrats in particular. It's essential that Congress hear from us en masse, constantly, daily! I think President Obama "gets it", knows the window for real health care reform is small. We have to get past the notion that it's always the other guy, the rare case, the "welfare queen or illegal alien whose case resembles yours. It's not. It's everywhere. Get on the stick, people. You ALL know a story!”

“Preident Obama's understanding of the situation in the region from his exposure to diverse cultures in his past, a real plus. I'm sooooo glad that he recognizes that not everyone wants to be us. Now if we can just get our allies on board for, what looks to my like a new kind of approach to the situation, there may be a chance of success. Glad to hear that Osama bin Laden is enemy number one, again, and not a would be "communist" or "socialist" president. This is an international problem and Obama knows it, and it will take a unique approach to solve, just like so many of our present problems, and a lot of study and some imagination. We have a CURIOUS president who is willing to deal with matters in ways that haven't really, wholeheartedly been tried before instead of the same old same old! Hallelujah!”

“Hey sunny123, Yes we surely do need to stay on top of what those dudes and dudesses are doining and thinking/ I subscribe to Michael Steeelel and the RNC website as well as John McCain and check on a a few others fairly ragularly. You would not believe the e-mail I got from Michael Steele, complete with videos of himself and Gov. Jindal's amazing reply to Presidident Obama's speech to the full Congress! First I roared with laughter that they actually put it out there before God and mankind, then I wrote a very serious (and polite) letter to Mr. Steele about Bobby's "convictions" which apparently include depriving the neediest of his constituents of extended unemployment insurance, among other things such as where were all those independent individuals who heroically rescued people from flooded houses (to be fair there were those) when it came to rescuing those equally desperate people at the Astrodome and Convention Center, and more. We can't let up on them for a second and let them spread their poison. We have to tell truth widely. Just be very sure of your facts and sources because they will jump on the most miniscule mistake and turn it into how Obama is turning us into a communist -socialist-Marxist dictatorship, and their base will believe it, sort of like the story about the lady here who warned her fellow WalMartcustomers to buy all that ammo because Obama had taken all the ammo out of an Arizona store.”

“The trouble is we have to keep up with what those "reporters" on Faux News are saying or not saying, simply because so many people listen to them and take every word to heart. My husband watches Fox News exclusively (except for O'Reilly, whom he's finally realized is the fool he is) and still doesn't know abou the New York Post cartoon of the two cops and dead chimp! I won't tell him-I'm curious to see how soon, if ever, he finds out about it through Fox.. “I am loving reading these posts! It's like someone opened a window and let in a lot of fresh air! But, oooooh, that's change! Very frightening proposition to some. Maybe that's what they really mean without knowing it, those goofy Limbaugh types, fear of obsolescence, Changing eight years of increasingly stale air for the great outdoors and a bright sunbeam. Times are tough, really desperate for a lot of people, and that is truth, not fear-mongering. My husband and I are staring over the edge of a cliff, personally. We are truly frightened. But when I read stuff like this or watch Barack talking with groups of people, I can see that the community organizer actually took in a lot of reality and gained heaps of understanding. And that grin makes me smile without realizing it. The somber declarations make me feel, not hopeless and afraid, but that someone takes all this very seriously indeed, and is determined to make it better for me. I can wait out the inevitable time it will take. It took nearly 30 years to get where we are. These song lyrics make me think of the Limbaughs and their ilk:: "They cry for help, we think it's all in fun. They cry without a sound, the desperate ones..." from "Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris", the song," The Desperate Ones". I worry, but not desperate, like maybe some of the people mentioned in Bob's post.”

“apoyo, you are so right about the education system. The lack of basic knowkedge of civics and the Constitution, or understanding of basic concepts like habeas corpus and rule by law is stunning! I have written to Obama to please include improvements in those areas along with science, tehnology and math, and will be doing the same with my Congressional Rep and two Senators ( all Dems for the first time ever! Oh joy! Well, there was one other time quite a while ago, if memory serves, but one of the Senators switched parties). I'd like to see one of those little pocket sized copies of the Constitution that includes the Declaration, Articles of Confederation, and a little history thrown in, placed in every hotel/motel room along with the Gideon Bibles, Books of Mormon and other things you find in the bedside drawer depending on where in the country you are. And they are so cheap they should be free for the taking. Any motel/hotel chains out there willing to take up my challenge to do so? It would surely be the patriotic thing to do and certainly good PR. They are really dirt cheap when bought in quantity, and some people might actually pick them up and "steal" them like some people take towels and ashtrays, and some might even read them!”

“Yes,yes, I know all about the McCain e-mail. I subscribed to his website during the campaign just so I'd know what the opposition was saying to its "supporters. It is extremely thin on substance and, to me relects "classical" conservatism: sve what you've got, don't change the way you do things under any circumstances, even if it might be for the better, and an astonishing lack of foresight, even for a Republican. I replied, of course, at length, and among other things referred to a speeaker I heard this weekend who claimed (rightly so, I think) that half the government is in the 19th or 20th (early?) and the other half in the 21st. We know, I think, who is where. I also pointed out the hypocrasy of the Bush spending, especially on Iraq and took a swipe or two at the super-rich Marie Antoinette attitude referred to on the Huff Post a few days ago, including, politely, "how many houses do I own? McCain, himself and seem befuddlement last fall when the economy reallt tanked. It's worth a read, and a reply. I think the Marie Antoinette analogy is a very apt one, and McCain and friends have NO clue.”

You meant that figuratively, but it will probably become a reality as people too frightened to tell what they knew about what happened come out of the woodwork with a spate of books about the Bushies, afraid of losing jobs and ruining careers, perfectly honest people just trying to do their jobs amd raising families. There are already a few such books, but without threats being held over their heads for telling truth, a lot of truth may be coming out soon. Certain military and intelligence folks have already spoken out, but the the lower echelons not protected by fine careers followed by retirement, and therefore untouchable by Bushie bosses, may find it within themselves to tell their stories. Could be an interesting few years of reading....... Historians will be chiming in big time, soon, I"m sure, as well.”
