AP Poll Week 13: College Football Rankings Have Ole Miss, Cal In Top 25

AP Poll Week 13: College Football Rankings Have Ole Miss, Cal In Top 25

“It drives me crazy to hear ESPN commentators rave about the SEC and Big Ten, despite the cupcake schedules they normally carry. For example: just yesterday, Alabama plays Chattanooga at home and Florida plays....might as well have been my high school. Nobody says a word about how unfair that is, especially this late in the season. Padding records and numbers for Tim Tebow and other SEC schools......if the Pac Ten pulled anything like that, most sportswriters would roast those schools over an open flame.”

Mom4Choice replied on Nov 22, 2009 at 18:55:43

“While other high-profile teams were starting their seasons against the SW Missouris and the Western Kentuckys of the world, Bama was dropping a lesser opponent to schedule VT for our season opener, and playing 8 straight games before getting a bye week in one of the toughest conferences in the nation. Meanwhile, almost every SEC opponent we faced this season had an open date right before we played them, and we have 5 DAYS to focus solely on preparing for our big rival, Auburn, who has 14 days to get ready for us. So say what you will about the hype Bama's getting, but the fact is few teams could make it to 11-0 under similar circumstances.

As for the Chattanooga game, I was there, and the entire second half was dedicated to giving our backups valuable playing time, and practically all of Mark Ingram's 102 rushing yards came before midway through the second quarter. Unlike some other teams who shall remain nameless, we don't leave our Heisman candidate in the whole game to run up the score and pad stats, in hopes of securing a few more votes. The "team" concept isn't lost on us, TYVM.”

Palemoon replied on Nov 22, 2009 at 17:21:37

“I agree with a few of your things so let me start with that. I agree that they gush too much about the SEC and Big Ten while giving no credit to the other conferences. To me, the ACC is as tough as any conference there is. And I'll even give the Pac Ten conference some love as being tough and competitive in it's own right. To me, ALL of the conferences should be taken seriousy, including those that TCU and Boise State belong to.

What I disagree with, and I can't believe I'm defending Florida here as they are the hated rivals of 2 of my current teams. But both Bama and Florida didn't really get much of a break til this week. And these games really had no impact on the rankings, or anything. They were simply scheduled for both teams to have some tune-up time prior to placing their biggest, most dangerous rivals of the year. Those being Auburn and Florida State. Both of which could realistically beat Bama and Florida respectively in a couple of weeks. I think if UF goes into the FSU game expecting an easy time because God Bowden is retiring and FSU is having an off year, they will be proven wrong. Most especially this year.”

“What Liberals must realize is that the majority of Republicans believe everything they hear on their media machine. They believe it all tooth and nail!

I was talking to a relative last weekend. He is an old-school Taft/Eisenhower Republican and a very educated man. He reads the Invester's Business Daily and watches a little Fox News every now and then. That being said, I was amazed at how much he HATES Obama. I heard "fascist" and "socialist" practically in the same sentence.

But my relative is not a firebrand. Most movement conservatives, I believe, cannot be persuaded, compromised with, cajoled, etc. They are spent....soiled......beyond any hope and repair. The Democratic Party will never be much more than a failure until they realize this and fight back.”
Why Girls Like Bad Boys

Commented Jul 09, 2009 at 11:40:36 in Living

“I am not a psychologist.

That being said, I wonder if this issue might have something to do with the hidden (and not hidden) effects of sexual abuse on girls. Case in point: I know a woman who was molested by her father as a child and she has somehow gravitated toward and now married a man who is a spit image of the father who she has hated for a very long time. He is very much the definition of the "bad boy" type.

I hate to simplify things so much, but it often scares me to think how common sexual abuse is among young girls and their relations. I have known a lot of women who were victims of this and it scares me to think that there are many more out there who can't even come to terms with what has happened in their own lives.”

RobinSeattle replied on Jul 09, 2009 at 21:48:28

“Actually, you're on to something.

Women tend to repeat in their private lives what they experienced at home with dad. So if dad wasn't emotionally available or was physically absent a lot then the daughters in those households often choose men who really aren't "there" in one way or another in the relationship.

As the male definition in the household, women are often looking for a daddy substitute and bad boys fulfill that role because they are more dominant personality types who insist on calling the shots in a relationship whereas nice guys tend to be more wishy washy in that regard. In other words, the bad boy becomes her daddy. Kinda wacked, but true.”

“I've watched enough "West Wing" episodes to know that American politics is always more complicated than most people think. I also understand the depths to which this country has sunk as a result of the worst president in American history, as well as successive congresses which have also been unprecedented in their ineptness.

Having said that, I was always afraid that Obama ran the risk being just another Jimmy Carter; giving the Republicans another four years to regroup and bring onboard some desperately needed new blood. Early on, Obama hitched his wagon to the DLC, which we all know has taken the Democratic Party in very unsavory directions.

I am willing to give him time before giving any credence to my outrage at many of the economic policies he has implemented, as well as not telling AIPAC to stick it.”

“There is so much about these pirate stories that make no sense at all. First of all, the Somali coast is long, but very straight and barren. There are few places where these so called "pirates" can hide. Furthermore, why is it that the world's largest navy, in concert with many other nations, cannot keep those shipping lanes free of pirate boats? The technology balance is overwhelmingly in our favor, even if these pirates are armed with GPS, small arms, and shoulder-fired rockets. Why aren't ships in the area armed? It would cost very little to keep assault rifles and other arms onboard.

And as per usual, NPR interviewed the Navy commander who gave the kill order and they treated it like a PR spin move for the Navy. I don't doubt that the SEALs did a great job, but it's strange to me how the media seems very disinterested in asking very simple questions about these pirate capers.”

“What still amazes me is the fact that Republicans will always lionize Ronald Reagan. Forever. His image will always warm the cockles of conservative hearts in much the same way that Lenin did for the Soviets as he lay there in Red Square. Schools, post offices, airports, etc. will continue to have his name plastered to the front.

The irony is that GW Bush did far more to champion the conservative cause in this country than Reagan ever did. And he did so with personal glee, while poking any critics in the eye. Reagan could, on occasion, ignore and did sometimes did not listen to his base when it came to raising taxes, talking to the Soviets, or pulling out of Lebanon.

It was GWB who planted the GOP's flag atop the Reichstag and it amuses me to see the GOP then punch his one-way ticket to the Gulag of history.”

Economically-speaking, I don't think Obama has what could be called a strong ideology. I think he was told in no uncertain terms by the main power brokers of the Democratic Party that he could not and would not win the election without winning hearts and minds on Wall Street. It has been the Republican party that has brought this state to the brink of destruction by being 100% against any kind of tax increases. It could then feed into right-wing hatred of public assistance programs that help millions of men, women, and children, not unlike the fictional "Welfare Queen" from 1980s.
