“NBC poll: Public sours on health reform

Just 32 percent say it's a good idea, versus 47 percent who say it's a bad idea.
In addition, for the first time in the survey, a plurality prefers the status quo to reform. By a 44-41 percent margin, respondents say it would be better to keep the current system than to pass Obama's health plan.

By comparison, in September's and October's NBC/Journal polls, the American public preferred changing the system to the status quo, 45 to 39 percent.

The poll was conducted Dec. 11-14, and has a margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points.
The full survey will be released tonight at 6:30 pm ET on NBC Nightly News and MSNBC.com.

Once the government takes over 1/8 of the economy, a lot of formerly private sector workers are going to be forced to join the SEIU. And SEIU bosses are hoping that the new members will cough up enough money to save the pension funds they have so mismanaged.

The SEIU spent $85 million on Barack Obama’s campaign. Among its biggest rewards would be millions of medical civil servants (and millions of new, dues-paying members). The WSJ’s September 10, 2009 op-ed (“Read the Union Health-Care Label—Get ready for Detroit-style labor relations in our hospitals”), describes the bill opening “the door to implement forced unionization schemes” by reclassifying in-home health-care (and child-care) contractors as union members.

Mr. Stern's "middle class" spin would be more believable if the SEIU did more for its own members, especially their pensions. Public records based on the SEIU's own filings show that the SEIU National Industry Pension plan – which covers some 101,000 workers – was only 75% funded in 2006. Put another way, the plan had only three-fourths of the money it needs to meet its retirement obligations. And the national chapter is only the start. Some 13 local SEIU pension plans in 2006 were less than 80% funded; several didn't reach 65%.

The SEIU's top brass, on the other hand, is guaranteed generous compensation funded by employees' mandatory dues-payments. Too bad the workers they're supposed to be representing don't receive similar benefits:

On the other hand, SEIU leaders are highly attentive to their own pension funding. A separate fund run by the national union, this one covering the benefits of SEIU officers, was 103% funded in 2006. The top SEIU guns are set for their golden years.
