“Just because he's not a bully you think he's weak? Do we have a health care bill? Yes. Are we pulling out of Iraq? Yes. Are we closing Guantanomo prison? Yes. Did we expand SCHIP? Yes. Did we pass the best GI Bill since WWII? Yes. I am so sick of progressives turning on this president because he isn't their stooge. Is he as progressive as I would like? No. But after being involved in politics for over 35 years, I can tell you that progress in DC is misery, but we are on the right track. You probably would have wanted to k i// social security, medicare and any civil rights legislation. Do we need to push for more progressive reforms to health care? Yes. But don't sell Obama short, he's won every time people had him out for the count. He's got patience, which is more than I can say for you!”

“Apparently after eight years of Bush some on the (so-called) left have come to identify "being a president" (or leader) with "bullying" ... .
Now that we have again a "smart power" person in the Oval Office, they don't recognize the "presidential" signs they became used to... lol.
Let's hope that it will also work the other way around, and that after 4 or 8 years of Obama, some on the right will not recognize the next GOPer in the WH as a "president" if he starts bullying again, and will write long "psychological" analyses to speculate about which leadership qualities he's more precisely lacking ... :-)))))”

Then I slowly realized she liked torture as a subject and was making the arguments that would support it politically thus keeping it going on forever. That was a sinking feeling.”

“I had a Vietnamese friend who worked for the French, then the US, then the Vietnamese throughout that lengthy war. She told me one story I always keep in mind when talking about wars and occupation. She said that under the French, they had great food, leisurely working hours, plenty of vacation. Then came the Americans, and there were no more lunch time naps, the air conditioning units arrived, they worked 8:30-5, one week vacation a year, and the food was inedible. Then the US left, and the Vietnamese hired her, after she went to a reeducation camp, the air conditioners broke and were just pushed out of the windows, the lunch naps returned, and the food was traditional, and edible again. This is how it will be for the Afghans too. We'll leave, and their society will go back to Afghan normal.”
